You can keep a prerecorded video streaming to YouTube Live from an Ubuntu server on Hetzner Cloud by using FFmpeg to send the file over RTMPS and systemd to restart FFmpeg if it exits. Create a YouTube encoder stream, copy its RTMPS URL and private stream key, configure FFmpeg for the source and available upload capacity, then test the preview, stream health, and recovery before leaving it unattended. Hosting on Hetzner does not by itself establish the best route to YouTube or the best playback experience for viewers in India; measure both.

What this setup does—and what it does not

This guide covers sending a video file already available on an Ubuntu Hetzner Cloud server to YouTube Live. FFmpeg reads and encodes or remuxes the file, sends it to YouTube, and can loop the input. A systemd service can start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after a process failure.

This is not a camera-streaming setup: a cloud VM generally has no camera attached. Nor does a single file-input command provide a managed playlist with transitions or safely coordinate multiple inputs. Those are separate workflows. Restarting a process is useful recovery, but it cannot guarantee YouTube ingest availability, correct source media, or uninterrupted delivery.

1. Create a YouTube encoder stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live, then create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Open the stream’s settings and copy the server URL and stream key. To use encrypted ingest, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL using YouTube’s lock control; do not guess or substitute an endpoint. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted RTMP and recommends it. YouTube’s encoder settings explain supported protocols and settings, and its stream setup guidance covers configuring an encoder. [c001] [c002]
  3. Treat the key like a password. Do not put it in screenshots, public logs, source control, or a command typed into a shared or logged terminal. Store it in a protected configuration or credential mechanism accessible to the service. If it is exposed, reset it using YouTube’s stream key reset instructions. [c008]

The exact RTMPS endpoint shape can vary with the URL YouTube gives you and the encoder workflow. Validate how the copied URL and key should be combined for the installed FFmpeg build rather than assuming a URL format.

2. Install FFmpeg and check the build

First connect to the Ubuntu server over SSH and confirm its release. Installation details can differ by Ubuntu release and enabled package sources, so check the commands against the server’s actual version. For the Ubuntu package build, a common starting point is:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders | grep -E 'libx264| h264'
ffmpeg -hide_banner -protocols | grep -E 'rtmp|tls'

These checks show the installed version and whether relevant encoders and protocols appear in the build. The sample command below uses libx264; if it is unavailable, use an FFmpeg build with that encoder or adapt the command to an encoder actually present. Confirm RTMPS protocol support before relying on the command.

3. Choose a YouTube-compatible output

YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video ingest codecs. For a conventional CPU-based FFmpeg setup, H.264 with libx264 is a straightforward default when supported. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its current encoder-settings guidance lists the following recommended H.264 rates: [c001]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate Listed minimum
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps

These are YouTube’s listed rates, not a promise that a particular Hetzner instance or network path can sustain them. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload headroom, checking outbound bitrate, and testing the stream. For example, a 10 Mbps video target needs roughly 12 Mbps of stable outbound capacity with that headroom, before accounting for additional fluctuations or overhead. Choose a lower resolution or bitrate if the server’s measured outbound capacity is not reliably sufficient. [c004]

Set the keyframe interval to two seconds based on the source frame rate: at 30 fps, that is 60 frames. The example uses a 30 fps keyframe interval; if the source has another frame rate, adjust the GOP settings accordingly and verify the resulting stream settings.

4. Send and loop a video file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows a real-time file pattern using -re and the FLV muxer: ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. That example is plain RTMP; adapt the pattern to the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube and the installed build’s expected URL syntax. FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation describes the pattern. [c006]

Here is an illustrative command shape for a 30 fps H.264/AAC file that loops. It is not a verified universal command: replace the file path and URL placeholders, check source properties and encoder availability, and validate the current YouTube URL/key syntax before starting.

  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
  • -re paces file input in real time rather than sending it as fast as possible.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. A loop can still have a visible or audible discontinuity at the boundary; it does not create a seamless edit.
  • -b:v and -maxrate set the illustrative video rate, while -bufsize sets the rate-control buffer. The 4500 kbps value is an example, not one of YouTube’s listed rates for 1080p30 or 720p30 above.
  • -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 target a 60-frame, two-second GOP at 30 fps. Match these to the actual frame rate.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p and AAC audio are common compatibility choices; check that they suit the source and your build.
  • The shell-variable endpoint is illustrative. Do not expose the actual key in shell history, process listings, or service logs; use a protected secret mechanism and confirm whether the endpoint format needs a separator or a different arrangement.

If the source has no audio, unusual frame dimensions, variable frame rate, or a different frame rate, inspect it and adapt the mapping and encoding options. A live capture input needs device-specific input arguments and is outside this cloud file-source procedure.

5. Keep FFmpeg running after SSH disconnects

Do not rely on an interactive SSH session to supervise a nonstop stream. A systemd service can launch FFmpeg at boot and restart it when the process exits. This is an operational example, not an official FFmpeg recipe or a tested service; adapt paths, user permissions, and secret handling to the server.

Create a service unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service with an editor run as an administrator. Use a dedicated service account and protected environment or credential file for the stream URL/key; do not paste a real key into a publicly readable unit file.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube Live file stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-stream.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/source.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv ${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Systemd does not run ExecStart through a shell by default, so shell-style variable expansion in that illustrative line may not work as written. Before enabling a service, choose a safe, supported way to pass the secret and form the endpoint—such as a wrapper with tightly restricted permissions or a systemd credential mechanism—and test it on the selected Ubuntu/systemd version. Avoid a wrapper that prints the key or exposes it to other users.

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f
sudo systemctl stop youtube-stream.service

enable --now starts the service immediately and enables it at boot; status and journalctl help diagnose failures; stop stops it cleanly. A restart policy can relaunch FFmpeg after an exit, but a bad key, unreadable file, unsupported codec, insufficient capacity, or repeated connection failure can produce a restart loop rather than a healthy stream.

6. Test the stream, recovery, and India audience path

  1. Start with a short test stream. Check that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed, that its preview looks and sounds right, and that stream-health indicators report no unresolved problem.
  2. Measure outbound capacity from the server, not just download speed. Leave the recommended 20% headroom and watch for bitrate instability. Re-test after changing server type, resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, or network route. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and checking stream health. [c004] [c007]
  3. Deliberately stop and restart the FFmpeg process, then reboot the server and confirm that the service reconnects and the Live Control Room receives the feed again. Do this before depending on the stream unattended; automatic process restart is not the same as guaranteed recovery of YouTube ingest.
  4. Observe playback from the intended audience locations in India as well as checking ingest health. The server-to-YouTube ingest path and YouTube-to-viewer playback path are different. The available guidance does not establish a best Hetzner location for Indian viewers, a fastest route to YouTube ingest, or a region-specific performance result; measure rather than infer from geography.

Hetzner documents native cloud-init auto-configuration for Cloud Networks on Ubuntu 22.04 or later, without additional software for that feature. That concerns private Cloud Network configuration; a simple public push to YouTube may not need a private network, and it says nothing about a server’s CPU capacity or route quality. See Hetzner’s Cloud Networks FAQ. [c005]

YouTube notes that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous broadcast, verify the current Live Control Room behavior and consider how archive duration affects your channel workflow. [c003]

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder The installed build lacks libx264 or the encoder you selected. Check ffmpeg -encoders; install or select a build with the needed encoder, or adapt the command to an available supported encoder.
Connection or SSL error when publishing Incorrect endpoint/key syntax, unsupported protocol support, or a transport connection issue. Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, verify how the key joins the endpoint, check RTMPS support in the build, and inspect YouTube’s suggested SSL troubleshooting, including port 443 where appropriate. [c002]
YouTube receives no video or reports poor stream health Wrong key or URL, unsupported settings, unstable outbound capacity, or a source/encoding issue. Check the stream settings, FFmpeg output and service logs; compare bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current recommendations; lower the output rate or resolution if needed, then test again.
The service fails immediately or repeatedly restarts Invalid systemd configuration, inaccessible media or secret files, command/variable handling errors, or an FFmpeg failure. Inspect systemctl status youtube-stream.service and journalctl -u youtube-stream.service; validate paths, permissions, the executable path and endpoint construction. Do not assume repeated restarts mean a live stream has recovered.
Picture or sound jumps when the file repeats The file’s end and start do not form a seamless transition. Use media edited for a clean loop, or plan a different playlist/transition workflow; FFmpeg’s loop option only repeats input.
Viewers in India report buffering despite a healthy ingest Playback delivery to viewers may differ from the server’s ingest connection; the symptoms alone do not identify a Hetzner-region cause. Observe playback from intended viewer locations and compare with Live Control Room health. Avoid assuming that moving the VM to a particular country fixes the playback path.
