Apple Arcade can be shared with the family organizer and up to five other people through Family Sharing. Each person uses a separate Apple Account, while the organizer’s Apple Arcade or Apple One subscription supplies the game catalog. To make the setup age-appropriate, configure the child’s Screen Time from the adult’s device, then test access with the child’s account. Apple TV adds one important qualification: most Apple Arcade games require a separately sold Bluetooth game controller or another accessory.

What Family Sharing changes for Apple Arcade

Family Sharing creates one household group for Apple services without requiring everyone to use the same login. Apple’s Family Sharing documentation allows an organizer plus up to five additional family members, for six people in total. The organizer sends invitations and manages the group; each invited person keeps their own Apple Account, game progress, recommendations, and personal data.

When the organizer subscribes to Apple Arcade, Family Sharing makes that subscription available to the other people in the group. The same sharing behavior applies when Apple Arcade access comes through an Apple One subscription. Family members can open the Apple Games app, where available, and use the shared subscription while signed in to their own accounts. Sharing access does not mean sharing Apple Account credentials; Apple specifically expects every member to use an individual account.

Check these requirements before you start

  • An adult organizer: One adult must create or manage the Family Sharing group and send invitations.
  • Separate Apple Accounts: Prepare an Apple Account for every adult and child. Do not give a child the organizer’s password or have several people play under one account.
  • A subscription: The organizer needs an active standalone Apple Arcade subscription or an Apple One plan that includes Apple Arcade.
  • Compatible hardware and software: Apple Arcade supports iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro, but the available service and individual games can vary by country or region, hardware, software version, and game.
  • Time to configure Screen Time: Have the adult organizer’s or parent/guardian’s device available. The child’s controls are set from Family settings on that adult device.

If a family member lives in a different country or uses older hardware, do not assume that every game in the catalog will appear. Apple treats availability as dependent on the current region, device, operating system, and title.

Step 1: Create or confirm your Family Sharing group

  1. Sign in to the organizer’s device. Use the adult Apple Account that will manage the household group.
  2. Open Family settings. In Settings, open the Family section. If Family Sharing has not been created, follow the prompts to start a family group.
  3. Invite each person. Add up to five other family members. Send each invitation to that person’s own Apple Account rather than creating a shared login.
  4. Have invitees accept. Each person should accept the invitation while signed in to the Apple Account they will use for games. A child’s account should remain separate from the organizer’s account.
  5. Confirm the roster. Return to Family settings and check that every intended player appears in the group before troubleshooting the subscription.

Family Sharing is the access layer; it does not merge profiles. A child who is missing from the group cannot receive the organizer’s shared Apple Arcade access until the invitation is accepted and the account appears in the family roster.

Step 2: Subscribe to Apple Arcade or Apple One

  1. Start the subscription on the organizer’s account. Choose a standalone Apple Arcade subscription or an Apple One subscription that includes Apple Arcade.
  2. Wait for the subscription to become active. Family Sharing can distribute the service only after the organizer’s subscription is active and shareable.
  3. Leave Family Sharing enabled. The other members do not need separate Apple Arcade subscriptions when they are in the organizer’s family group and using their own Apple Accounts.
  4. Tell family members where to look. Ask them to open the Apple Games app, where available, and sign in with their own Apple Account. The shared catalog should be associated with the family subscription rather than with the organizer’s credentials.

Apple describes this arrangement as access for the organizer and up to five family members. It is a sharing entitlement, not a way to create additional organizer accounts.

Step 3: Confirm device, region, and software compatibility

Apple Arcade runs across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro. That broad device list does not guarantee identical availability. Apple warns that the service and particular games can vary by country or region, hardware, software, and game.

For each child’s device, check three things:

  • Device type: It must be one of the supported Apple platforms.
  • Current software support: The operating system must meet the requirement for the service and the specific game.
  • Regional and title availability: A game may be unavailable in the account’s country or on a particular model even when Apple Arcade itself is active.

Use the game’s own store page as the final check. Availability is title-specific, so a working subscription does not prove that every game will run on every family device.

Step 4: Open a child’s Screen Time controls from the adult device

With Family Sharing in place, Apple puts the child’s Screen Time controls in the adult’s Family settings. On the organizer’s or parent/guardian’s device, use this path:

Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Screen Time

  1. Open Settings and select Family.
  2. Tap the child’s name.
  3. Choose Screen Time.
  4. Follow Apple’s prompts to enable management for that child.
  5. Create the Screen Time passcode on the adult’s device when prompted. Keep it private from the child so the limits cannot be changed without the adult’s approval.

Apple allows these settings to be changed later, so you can begin with a conservative profile and adjust it as the child’s age, schedule, or games change.

Choose the controls that matter for Apple Arcade

Apple Arcade games are apps, so the useful safeguards are broader than a single “Arcade” switch. Combine age ratings, time controls, social permissions, and purchase approval according to the child’s needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control What it governs When it is useful
App and game age ratings Which rated apps and games the child may use or download. Set a rating ceiling that matches the child’s age rather than allowing every title in the catalog.
Downtime A recurring schedule when most apps are unavailable. Use for bedtime, school hours, or another predictable no-play period.
App or category limits How long the child may use selected apps or categories. Use when games are allowed but daily play needs a defined limit.
Web-content restrictions Access to inappropriate web content reached through apps or links. Add a second layer of protection where a game or related service can open web pages.
Communication limits Who the child can communicate with and when. Useful for games or services that include social or messaging features.
Game Center restrictions Game Center-related multiplayer, profile, and social capabilities. Use when you want gameplay but less interaction with other players.
Ask to Buy Approval for eligible downloads or purchases initiated by the child. Require an adult decision before a child obtains an app or makes an eligible purchase.

Set an age-appropriate game range

Start with app and game age ratings. This determines which titles the child can access, so it is the first filter to set before discussing daily minutes. A rating limit does not control how long a permitted game can be played; pair it with Downtime or an app/category limit when time is the concern.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Separate bedtime rules from daily limits

Use Downtime for a recurring block such as overnight or school hours. Use a specific app or category limit when the child may play during the day but only for a defined amount of time. These controls solve different problems: Downtime is schedule-based, while limits are usage-based.

Control purchases and downloads

Turn on Ask to Buy for eligible downloads or purchases if an adult should approve the request. This keeps the child’s account separate while giving the organizer a decision point. Ask to Buy is an approval workflow; it does not replace age ratings or time limits.

Decide how much social access is appropriate

Review Communication Limits and Game Center restrictions independently. A child might be allowed to play a single-player game but not communicate with other players, or may be ready for multiplayer while still needing tighter communication rules. Choose the combination that matches the child and the specific game.

  1. On the child’s iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or Apple Vision Pro, sign in with the child’s own Apple Account.
  2. Open the Apple Games app, where available, or the App Store entry for a game.
  3. Check whether Apple Arcade access and the intended titles appear without entering the organizer’s credentials.
  4. Try a title within the allowed age range and observe whether the Screen Time schedule and limits behave as expected.
  5. If the child will play on Apple TV, open the game page and look for the controller icon before attempting to play.

This test confirms both entitlement and the practical effect of the restrictions. It also catches a common setup error: testing while still signed in to the organizer’s account can make a child’s access appear to work even though the child’s account is not correctly included.

If Apple Arcade is missing or a game will not open

Work through the checks below in order. Change one condition at a time so you can identify the cause.

Symptom Check Corrective action
The child sees no shared Apple Arcade access. Family roster and subscription status. Confirm the child accepted the invitation, appears under Family, and that the organizer’s Apple Arcade or Apple One subscription is active and shareable.
The organizer can see a game but the child cannot. Age-rating and regional rules. Review the child’s allowed app rating and confirm that the title is available for the child’s country or region and device.
The game is installed but blocked at certain times. Screen Time schedule or limit. Check Downtime and the specific app or category limit from Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Screen Time.
A download or eligible purchase is waiting for approval. Ask to Buy. The organizer or approving adult must respond to the request; this is expected behavior when Ask to Buy is enabled.
The game works on one family device but not another. Hardware, software, and title support. Verify the requirements for that device and game. Apple’s availability can differ by hardware, software, region, and title.
The game opens on Apple TV but cannot be played comfortably. Controller requirement. Check the game page for the controller icon and provide a compatible third-party Bluetooth game controller or other required accessory when the title needs one.

If all account and subscription checks pass but a title still does not appear, treat the title’s own compatibility and regional availability as the next variable rather than recreating the family group.

Apple TV: plan for a controller

Touch controls are available on iPhone and iPad for games that support them, but Apple TV has a stronger accessory requirement. Apple’s Apple TV user guidance says most Apple Arcade games require a third-party Bluetooth game controller or another accessory sold separately, and some games require one.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Before choosing an Apple TV game:

  1. Open the game’s page and look for the controller icon, which indicates controller support.
  2. Read the game’s listed requirements; a controller icon does not mean every controller feature is identical across titles.
  3. Have the required third-party Bluetooth controller or other accessory available before the child starts the game.
  4. Test the title with the intended controller under the child’s account, not only under the organizer’s account.

Do not assume that an Apple TV remote is sufficient for every title. The game page and Apple TV guidance are the authoritative checks for whether an accessory is needed.

Adjust the setup as your family changes

Family Sharing and Screen Time are not one-time settings. Revisit them when a child receives a new device, moves to a different country or region, reaches a new age-rating range, or starts using multiplayer features.

  • New family member: Invite the person to Family Sharing, confirm their separate Apple Account, and then configure Screen Time if they are a child.
  • New device: Sign in with the correct account and verify the device and operating-system requirements for each intended game.
  • Changing maturity level: Raise app and game ratings deliberately rather than removing every restriction at once.
  • Changing schedule: Edit Downtime for recurring periods and app/category limits for daily play.
  • Changing social access: Revisit Communication Limits and Game Center restrictions when multiplayer or social features become appropriate.
  • Changing purchasing rules: Keep Ask to Buy enabled for eligible requests until the family is comfortable with a different approval process.

Apple documents that the child’s controls can be changed later. Make adjustments from the adult’s Family settings so the Screen Time passcode and the account relationship remain under adult control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical setup profile by priority

If you are unsure where to begin, set controls in this order:

  1. Identity: Verify separate Apple Accounts and the correct Family Sharing membership.
  2. Access: Confirm the organizer’s Apple Arcade or Apple One subscription is active.
  3. Safety: Set app and game age ratings, then review web-content restrictions.
  4. Time: Add Downtime for unavoidable no-play periods and a limit for the games or categories that need a daily cap.
  5. Social features: Configure Communication Limits and Game Center restrictions based on the child’s readiness.
  6. Purchases: Enable Ask to Buy for eligible downloads or purchases that require adult approval.
  7. Device test: Test the child’s account on every platform the family actually uses, including controller behavior on Apple TV.

This order prevents a common mistake: trying to solve an account or compatibility problem by loosening a safety setting. Entitlement, compatibility, time, social access, and purchase approval are separate layers and should be diagnosed separately.
