Cyberpunk 2077 does not have official co-op, multiplayer matchmaking, an online lobby, or a supported friend-invite button. The released story game is designed for one player. You can install community modifications on PC, but those projects are unofficial, version-dependent, and unsupported by CD PROJEKT RED. If you want a supported cooperative Cyberpunk experience, the official franchise page points to the separate physical Cyberpunk 2077: The Board Game, not a multiplayer mode for the video game.
What you can do today
There are three different things people mean when they ask about “Cyberpunk 2077 co-op.” They have very different requirements and outcomes:

That distinction prevents the most common mistake: looking for an invitation menu that the video game never exposes. Buying a different edition of the video game does not change its player model. The 2023 announcement for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition describes the base game and Phantom Liberty; it does not add co-op.
Why there is no “Invite Friend” button
The released game has no supported multiplayer service to create a party, synchronize missions, or transfer one player’s campaign state to another player. Consequently, there is no official path such as Pause menu → Friends → Invite, no co-op matchmaking queue, and no two-player story mode to enable in settings.

If you open the game and see only the normal single-player menus, nothing is missing from your installation. You do not need to activate a hidden option, buy downloadable content, or install a launcher add-on to unlock an invitation flow. Start a save and play the campaign alone.
The practical alternatives for friends who own the video game are separate saves, shared viewing, and discussion. You can stream your screen to friends, compare character builds and mission choices, or play the same missions independently while staying on a voice call. Those activities let you share the experience without pretending that both characters occupy one game world.
What REDmod does—and what it does not do
REDmod is an official, free modding tool. It adds integrated support for installing and loading community-created modifications; it is not an official multiplayer server, matchmaking layer, or friend-invite system.
CD PROJEKT RED’s mod-support guidance directs PC players toward community mod resources and explains that REDmod-compatible projects use the game’s mods folder and can be enabled through the launcher according to the documented procedure. Those instructions help load supported mods; they do not turn the campaign into a networked game.
The same support boundary is important when evaluating any project that claims to add online play. CD PROJEKT RED says community mods are created by the community and “not reviewed by CD PROJEKT RED.” The company does not create or maintain individual mods and may be unable to support a game that has been modified. A project can therefore disappear, stop receiving updates, break after a game patch, or require troubleshooting from its own maintainers.
How to evaluate an unofficial multiplayer project on PC
Do not install a mod solely because a video or old forum post says it worked. Treat every multiplayer project as a separate, unsupported software stack and check its current information immediately before installation.

1. Confirm the exact game build
Read the project’s current page for the game version it supports. A mod made for one build may fail after a later patch, even if the title and platform are unchanged. Record your installed build and compare it with the maintainer’s supported-build list before changing files.
2. Check platform and edition requirements
Verify whether the project supports your PC storefront, edition, language configuration, and operating-system setup. Do not assume that a mod available for one PC distribution works on every other distribution, and do not infer console support from a PC download page.
3. Read every dependency and prerequisite
Make a list of required frameworks, libraries, companion mods, REDmod support, configuration utilities, and load-order rules. A project may appear to install correctly while failing at launch because one prerequisite is absent or at the wrong version.
4. Check the project’s status and maintainer notes
Look for a recent release, a changelog, known limitations, open compatibility warnings, and a clear statement about whether development is active. The REDnode listing, for example, explicitly describes itself as “Single-player only. Cyberpunk 2077 is a single-player game, and REDnode is for single-player modding.” A modding framework or scripting project is not evidence of network play.
5. Back up saves before modifying the installation
Copy your current save files and keep an untouched backup outside the game’s folders. Also preserve a note of your installed mods and their versions. If an experiment prevents the game from loading or affects a save, you need a known-good recovery point rather than relying on an untested uninstall.

6. Install only through the project’s current instructions
Follow the maintainer’s documented file locations and launcher steps exactly. If the project requires REDmod, install the official tool first and use the documented mods directory. Do not substitute an old tutorial’s folder names or overwrite files simply because another mod used that method.

7. Keep participants on the same supported setup when required
If the project supports more than one player, follow its own requirements for matching game builds, dependencies, configuration files, and mod versions. The game’s normal menus do not enforce compatibility for an unofficial network layer; that responsibility belongs to the project’s maintainers and users.
8. Test with a clean, disposable save
Launch a small test rather than opening your primary campaign immediately. Confirm that the game reaches the main menu, loads the test save, and behaves as the project documentation describes. Record the exact error and the last change you made before asking the project’s support channel for help.
Common failure modes and safe recovery
The game updated and the project stopped working
This is the most predictable risk for an unofficial project. Recheck the project page for a build-specific update before reinstalling anything. If no compatible release exists, disable the project and return to the backed-up, unmodified installation rather than forcing files from an older release into the new game.

Check whether the project requires REDmod, whether its files are in the documented mods folder, and whether the launcher has enabled the required content. Re-read the project’s load-order and dependency notes. Avoid adding several unrelated mods at once, because that makes it impossible to identify which change caused the problem.
The game crashes or will not load a save
Stop using the affected save until you have isolated the cause. Disable the unofficial project and other recently added mods, restore the clean backup if necessary, and then follow the project maintainer’s removal instructions. Do not promise yourself that reinstalling the whole game will preserve modified saves; keep the backup before experimenting.
Players cannot connect to one another
First confirm that everyone is using the project’s currently supported build and dependency set. Then consult that project’s own networking instructions and known-issues list. There is no CD PROJEKT RED matchmaking service to diagnose, so generic in-game support menus cannot repair a third-party connection layer.

You cannot find a download or support reply
Community projects can be archived, hidden, or abandoned. Use the project’s current page and maintainer announcements rather than an unverified mirror. If the documentation no longer identifies a supported build, treat the project as unavailable instead of downloading random replacements.

How to “invite friends” when you are playing the normal game
There is no supported invitation action to perform. Friends cannot join your campaign through the pause menu, a console command, or the standard launcher. If you are using an unofficial project, any invitation or connection procedure comes from that project’s maintainers and is not part of Cyberpunk 2077’s menus or official support.
You can still organize a shared play session without network co-op:
- Screen sharing: one player streams the game while friends watch and discuss choices.
- Parallel campaigns: everyone plays the same mission or build concept in a separate save and compares outcomes afterward.
- Build workshops: compare attributes, cyberware, weapons, perks, and clothing choices without sharing a character file.
- Mission clubs: agree on a quest, play independently, and meet afterward to discuss alternate paths.
These options preserve the single-player design and avoid changing save files or installing unsupported software.
A supported cooperative alternative: Cyberpunk 2077: The Board Game
The official Cyberpunk franchise page describes Cyberpunk 2077: The Board Game as a “cooperative, story-driven tactical action board game.” Its listed campaign is more than 40 hours, and it includes a replayable Afterlife mode.

Check the current retailer, region, release, and availability details before buying because those commercial details can vary.
Choosing the right path
- You want the original video-game story: play the standard campaign solo; there is no setup step for co-op.
- You want to experiment on PC: evaluate an individual community project against its exact build, dependencies, platform requirements, and current status. Keep backups and expect unsupported troubleshooting.
- You want dependable cooperative rules: choose the separate board game rather than trying to retrofit multiplayer into the video game.
- You are considering an edition upgrade: confirm what the edition contains. The Ultimate Edition includes the base game and Phantom Liberty in the publisher’s announcement, but purchasing it does not unlock multiplayer.
Bottom line for invitations and co-op
Cyberpunk 2077’s released video game remains a single-player experience. There is no official friend-invite flow, lobby, or two-player story campaign to configure. REDmod is useful for loading compatible community mods, not for adding an official online service. A third-party multiplayer experiment may exist for a particular PC build, but its installation, stability, and future support must be verified on its own current project page. For supported cooperative Cyberpunk play, use the separate board game.
