To get email alerts when Craigslist finds listings that match your search, run the search, save it, then enable its alert in your Craigslist account. Alerts are tied to saved searches—not general notifications for every new post—and Craigslist does not promise a fixed delivery interval.
Set up a Craigslist email alert
- Choose a location and run your search. Open the Craigslist site for the relevant area, then enter the keywords, category, and any other criteria you want. Review the results before saving to make sure the search is focused. Craigslist describes this as a Saved Search.
- Save the search. On the results page, click save search, near the top right. Sign in to your Craigslist account if prompted.
- Turn on its alert. Open your account’s searches tab, find the saved search, and check the box in its alert column. Craigslist says it sends a welcome email when you sign up for an alert. See its Search Alerts help page.
- Check your email. Look for the welcome message. If it does not arrive, check spam or junk before troubleshooting further; Craigslist’s email-delivery help guidance recommends checking those folders.
What Craigslist alerts send and when
Craigslist checks a saved search based on the results in the previous alert: fewer results lead to more frequent searches. The help page does not state a fixed schedule, so do not rely on alerts arriving instantly or at a particular hourly interval. Each alert email can show up to 20 results, with the most recent first.
An alert match is not necessarily a first-time post. Renewed, reposted, or edited listings can appear if they match your saved criteria.
Make the search more reliable
Use a focused query
Choose the correct local Craigslist site and include relevant keywords, category, and filters before saving. If the results are too broad or miss listings you expect, revise the query and save it as a new search.

Avoid the ampersand caveat
Craigslist says a saved search containing the “&” symbol searches only the text before that symbol. Use boolean logic to modify results instead, as described in the Saved Searches guidance.
Change or stop an alert
Change the search criteria
Craigslist does not let you edit a saved search in place. Run the revised search, save it, and enable its alert; then delete the old saved search from the account’s searches tab if you no longer need it.

Stop receiving a particular alert
You can click Unsubscribe from this alert in the email, uncheck that search’s box in the account alert column, or delete the saved search.
Troubleshooting missing alerts
- No welcome email: Check spam or junk. Confirm you enabled the alert checkbox for the saved search in your account.
- No matching listings in an email: Alerts are tied to the saved query. Check the location, category, keywords, and other filters; also account for the “&” search limitation.
- Alerts do not arrive on a predictable schedule: Craigslist says search frequency depends on results from the previous alert and does not publish a fixed interval in the reviewed help instructions.
- You want to change the query: Save a replacement search and enable its alert; the existing saved search cannot be edited in place.
Or skip the browser setup
