There are two different ways to have music play continuously on YouTube in India: listen to a YouTube Music station, album or playlist for yourself, or broadcast an always-on live music stream to viewers. For personal listening, use YouTube Music; for a public broadcast, enable YouTube Live and make sure you have the rights to every track. A personal station is not a live stream, and a live broadcast has copyright checks and other requirements.
Choose between continuous listening and a live broadcast

Keep YouTube Music playing for personal listening
Start a station, album or playlist
- Open YouTube Music and select a station, album or playlist.
- Use shuffle if you want the playlist’s tracks played in a different order. YouTube describes stations based on favorite songs, albums and artists as another way to keep listening.
These are listening options inside YouTube Music, not a viewer-facing live broadcast. You do not need to enable YouTube Live to listen.
Background playback and screen-off listening in India
Whether playback continues while you use another app or turn off the screen depends on the subscription features available to your account. In its India announcement published March 12, 2026, Google said Premium Lite background play and downloads were rolling out for most videos; it distinguished YouTube Premium as the option for background playback that includes music content and YouTube Music Premium. Check your account’s current plan details before subscribing: availability and entitlements can change, and the announcement does not establish that every account has the same access.

Set up a continuous live music stream for viewers
This path is for channel owners who want to publish a live broadcast, not just listen to music themselves. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular encoder, bitrate, resolution, audio interface or 24/7 configuration, so choose a production setup suited to your stream rather than treating any one setting as an official requirement.
1. Enable live streaming ahead of time
- On your channel, select Create (+) → Go live → Enable.
- Complete phone verification when prompted.
- If this is your first live stream, do this at least 24 hours before the planned launch. YouTube for Artists says first-time live streaming should be enabled in advance.

2. Choose how to produce the broadcast
YouTube for Artists says an encoder offers more customization and control than a simple mobile or webcam stream. An encoder is optional, not a prerequisite established by that guidance. Select the production method that fits your needs and test it before the planned broadcast; the official guidance cited here does not set universal bitrate, resolution or keyframe values for a continuous music stream.
3. Confirm rights before playing music
Before going live, make sure your channel has rights to every recording, composition and other third-party element in the broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies such content, it may replace it with a placeholder; if the content remains, the stream can be interrupted or terminated. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

If a rights holder has licensed music for your broadcast, ask whether your channel must be allowlisted through Content ID. YouTube warns that a live stream can still be interrupted despite a license if the channel has not been allowlisted.
4. Use music only through a suitable rights route
Depending on the material and its terms, possible routes include getting permission, using music under a Creative Commons license in accordance with that license, using public-domain material, or selecting music from the YouTube Audio Library. YouTube cautions that none of these routes guarantees avoiding a Content ID claim or copyright strike; applicable rules and exceptions vary by country. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance and check the terms for each track.

Do not treat Creator Music as a live-stream music license. YouTube’s usage-details page says its tracks are for long-form videos, not live streams or Shorts, and describes availability as limited to U.S. YPP creators, with expansion outside the U.S. pending.
