To let a child play Bluey: The Videogame while limiting unwanted features, configure three separate layers: Nintendo Switch console restrictions, optional play-time supervision in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, and Nintendo Account eShop controls. Start at HOME > System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls. Choose an age preset or Custom Settings, set the permitted software rating to the level appropriate for your child, restrict communication and social posting when needed, then protect eShop visibility and spending in the family Nintendo Account settings. Because the game is rated E for Everyone by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and is listed for Nintendo Switch, a profile that allows Everyone-rated software should permit it. That rating does not, by itself, set time limits, chat rules, social sharing, or purchases.
What the parental controls can and cannot do
Nintendo’s controls are a collection of independent rules rather than a single “child mode.” A setting can govern the software a profile launches, while another controls interaction with other players, and an account-level rule controls what the child can see or buy in Nintendo eShop. Treat each area as a separate decision.
- Software rating: limits games according to the rating organization selected for your country or region.
- Communication: restricts in-game communication with other players. Nintendo documents both a global restriction and adjustments for individual software.
- Social posting: can block posting screenshots and videos to social media.
- Play time and history: the free smart-device app can set daily limits and show gameplay history.
- eShop access: Nintendo Account family settings govern eShop content visibility and spending for child or supervised accounts; these controls are separate from console gameplay restrictions.
These rules do not guarantee that every communication feature inside every title is blocked in exactly the same way. Nintendo’s settings are the documented console and account controls, while individual software can include its own features. Review the game and your family’s circumstances before allowing an exception.

Identify the title
The ESRB rating record identifies Bluey: The Videogame as E for Everyone and lists Nintendo Switch as a supported platform. If your child is playing a different Bluey title, check that title’s own rating and platform listing before applying the same rule. A game’s name, edition, region, or software update can affect the wording you see in menus.

Use a supervised child or family account
Decide which Nintendo user profile your child will use and which Nintendo Account is attached to it. Keep the parent or guardian PIN available for settings changes, but do not give that PIN to the child. If more than one child uses the console, apply the restrictions to each relevant profile and test each profile separately; a rule that works for one user does not prove that another user is configured identically.
Choose console-only or app-assisted supervision
You can finish setup on the Switch without a smart device. Linking the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app adds daily play-time limits, gameplay-history viewing, and the ability to exempt individually selected games from restrictions. Use an exemption only after a parent has intentionally reviewed that title and decided the exception is appropriate.
Set up the core restrictions on the Switch
Keep the console connected to its normal user profiles before beginning. Exact labels can vary by region and software version; when a label differs, follow the equivalent wording shown on your screen.
- Open System Settings. From the Switch HOME menu, select System Settings.
- Enter Parental Controls. Select Parental Controls, then choose Set Up Parental Controls.
- Choose how to continue. Nintendo offers two routes: continue on the console without a smart device, or link the setup to the free smart-device app. Select the route that fits your household.
- Select an age level or Custom Settings. An age preset is a quick starting point. Choose Custom Settings when you need to decide software, communication, and social-posting rules independently.
- Set Restricted Software. Choose the child’s permitted age level using the rating organization appropriate for your country. To allow Bluey: The Videogame, the selected level must permit software rated E for Everyone. A stricter level may prevent the game from launching even though the title itself is E-rated.
- Review In-Game Communication with Others. Leave this restricted for a young child unless you have reviewed the specific game and family situation. Nintendo documents a global restriction and a per-software adjustment, so read the choices carefully rather than assuming the game’s age rating changes communication access.
- Set Posting Screenshots/Videos to Social Media. Restrict this option if your child should not publish captures. This setting addresses posting captures; it is not a replacement for communication controls or eShop spending limits.
- Create and protect the parent PIN. Complete the on-screen confirmation and store the PIN privately. You will need it to change the restrictions or temporarily approve a blocked action.
After saving, return to the HOME menu and test the child’s profile. Do not use only the parent profile for testing: a parent profile may have different permissions and can make a blocked action appear to work.

Use the mobile app for schedules and activity review
Link the app during setup
If you selected the smart-device route, follow the pairing instructions displayed by the Switch and in the app. Keep the app associated with the parent’s device and protect access to that device. If you selected console-only setup initially, you can still follow Nintendo’s current linking flow later; the exact prompts depend on your region and software version.
Set a daily play-time limit
Use the app’s play-time controls to establish the amount of play your family considers appropriate on a typical day. Treat the limit as a schedule to review, not as proof that the child stopped at the exact moment. Explain the rule in advance, and decide how you will handle homework, travel, or a family activity that requires a temporary change.
Review gameplay history
Gameplay history helps you see how the console is being used and whether the schedule reflects reality. Check it periodically with your child rather than presenting it as a surprise surveillance report. If the history does not match what you expect, confirm that the child is using the supervised profile and that another user is not launching the game.

The app can allow an individually selected game to ignore restrictions. This is more precise than raising the permitted rating for every title, but it removes the protection for that selected game. Review the title first, document why you allowed it, and revisit the exception after updates or a change in the child’s age and circumstances.

Configure communication and social sharing separately
Communication with other players
For a young child, start with In-Game Communication with Others restricted. This is a conservative default when you have not reviewed a title’s online features. If you later decide to permit communication, make that decision for the specific software and child rather than treating an E rating as permission for online interaction. Nintendo’s controls can be global or adjusted per software, so verify which scope you changed.
Screenshots and video posting
Turn on the restriction for Posting Screenshots/Videos to Social Media when your child should not publish captures. Explain that blocking social posting does not necessarily prevent every form of communication inside a game, and allowing a capture on the console does not grant permission to publish it. Keep family rules about names, voices, images, and identifying information alongside the technical setting.
When a child needs a limited exception
If a child needs one approved title or feature, use the narrowest available per-software adjustment and leave the global restrictions intact for other games. Record the exception in your family’s rules so another adult knows what was approved and why. Remove it if the software, account, or family situation changes.
Block unwanted eShop visibility and spending
Console restrictions and eShop controls solve different problems. Nintendo Account family settings determine what child or supervised accounts can see and purchase in Nintendo eShop. Nintendo’s documented guidance describes these as content-visibility and spending restrictions, so complete this account step even when the Switch blocks communication and social posting.

- Sign in as the parent or family-group manager to the Nintendo Account settings used by the child or supervised account.
- Open the family or child-account controls and locate the eShop content and spending restrictions. Labels can vary by country and account type.
- Restrict visibility or purchases at the level appropriate for your child. If you want the child to play an already installed copy of Bluey: The Videogame without browsing or buying, keep the gameplay permission on the Switch while applying the separate eShop limits.
- Save and verify with the child account. Check both what the account can see and whether a purchase attempt requests the parent’s authorization. Do not infer success from the parent account, which may have unrestricted access.
Keep payment credentials and the parent account protected. The account controls are the place to address spending; changing the game-rating setting on the console is not a substitute.
How Bluey fits a child-friendly configuration
Because the ESRB lists Bluey: The Videogame as E for Everyone for Nintendo Switch, a software restriction that allows E-rated titles should allow the game to launch. That conclusion is limited to the rating and platform record. The rating does not configure communication, social-media posting, play-time schedules, gameplay-history reporting, eShop visibility, or spending.
A practical setup for a young child can therefore allow Everyone-rated software while restricting communication, blocking social posting, applying a daily schedule in the app, and limiting eShop content and spending in the Nintendo Account. A family that intentionally allows more interaction can loosen only the reviewed control and leave the other protections in place.

Choose settings by family situation
| Family goal | Software rating | Communication | Social posting | Play time | eShop |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Young child with a simple game library | Set the child’s age level; E-rated Bluey should be permitted. | Restricted globally; review any per-software change. | Restricted. | Use a daily limit in the app and review history. | Restrict visibility and spending in Nintendo Account family settings. |
| Child who needs one approved exception | Keep the general age level unchanged. | Keep the global rule; adjust only the reviewed software if necessary. | Keep restricted unless posting has been specifically approved. | Retain the schedule; use an individual-game exemption only after review. | Keep account-level purchase protection active. |
| Older child with supervised independence | Choose the appropriate regional rating level. | Decide after reviewing the specific game and family situation. | Set a rule that matches the child’s ability to share safely. | Use the app’s history to adjust a mutually agreed schedule. | Keep spending and visibility limits until the family intentionally changes them. |
| Shared console with different ages | Configure each child’s profile rather than relying on one shared profile. | Test each profile because permissions can differ. | Apply the rule to every supervised profile that needs it. | Review history by the correct user profile. | Check each child or supervised Nintendo Account. |
The table separates the five decisions that are most often confused: permitted age rating, communication, social sharing, scheduled play, and eShop access. A stricter choice in one column does not automatically change the others.

Test the finished setup before handing over the console
- Launch Bluey from the child profile. Confirm that the E-rated title opens under the selected software restriction.
- Check a blocked software example. Use a title that should exceed the child’s permitted rating, if one is available, and confirm that the restriction behaves as expected. Do not change the child’s rating merely to make this test pass.
- Review communication behavior. Verify the global communication setting and any per-software adjustment. Do not assume a game’s rating tells you whether every communication feature is available.
- Check capture-posting behavior. Confirm that the social-media posting restriction is enabled when required and explain the family rule about sharing.
- Check the schedule and history. In the app, verify that the correct Switch and child profile are linked, the daily limit is saved, and gameplay history is appearing for the expected user.
- Test eShop protection. From the child or supervised account, confirm the intended content visibility and purchase behavior. Stop before completing any purchase.
- Lock the parent controls. Confirm that changing a setting requests the parent PIN or the parent account’s authorization, and store those credentials away from the child.
Troubleshoot the most common problems
Bluey is blocked even though it is rated E
- Check that the child is using the intended profile and that the permitted software level includes E for Everyone under the rating organization selected for your country.
- Confirm that you are configuring the Nintendo Switch version of Bluey: The Videogame, not a different Bluey title or platform.
- Review the on-screen wording after a software update; Nintendo notes that menu names and exact options can vary by region and version.
- Test again with the parent PIN available, but do not give the PIN to the child.
The child can play but can still see or buy eShop content
Revisit the Nintendo Account family settings. eShop visibility and spending are account controls, not a consequence of the console’s software-rating rule. Verify the child or supervised account, save the restrictions, and test from that account rather than from the parent account.
The app does not show time or history correctly
- Confirm that the app is linked to the same Switch and supervised profile the child is using.
- Check that the daily limit was saved and that the console has completed the app’s connection or synchronization prompts.
- Look for another user profile launching the game; history for a different profile will not establish how the child’s profile was used.
A communication or sharing feature remains available
Check both the global setting and any per-software adjustment. Also distinguish communication from social posting: restricting one does not automatically restrict the other. If the software has its own feature, Nintendo’s console controls may not describe every behavior inside that title, so review the software’s information and maintain the family rule.
The PIN or parent approval is unavailable
Do not guess repeatedly or hand the console to the child with unrestricted access. Use Nintendo’s current account or console recovery process for your region, then set a new private PIN and retest the child profile.
Maintain the controls as your child grows
- Recheck after updates: menu labels and available options can change with software updates or regional settings.
- Review the rating choice: move to a different age level only when it matches your child’s current needs and your review of the software library.
- Audit exceptions: remove individual-game exemptions that are no longer necessary.
- Review history with context: use gameplay history to discuss routines, not as a substitute for supervision.
- Revisit account spending: keep eShop restrictions aligned with who can access payment methods and what the family has agreed to buy.
- Retest after profile changes: adding a user, changing the linked Nintendo Account, or sharing the console can produce a different permission set.
For current wording and regional behavior, consult Nintendo Support’s parental-control instructions and the ESRB parent guidance associated with your account region. The ESRB rating record remains the reference for the E classification and Nintendo Switch listing for Bluey: The Videogame.
