To restart a YouTube encoder automatically on a Contabo VPS, run it as a foreground process under systemd, enable the service at boot, and set a restart policy with a short delay. This can relaunch an encoder that exits and bring it back after a VPS reboot; it cannot repair a missing source, bad stream key, network failure, or guarantee that YouTube resumes the same live event. Test both the service and the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room.

What automatic restart does—and what it does not

A Linux service manager can start an encoder when the VPS boots and relaunch it when the process exits. For a YouTube encoder such as FFmpeg, this is usually a better first recovery layer than rebooting the entire server: it targets the failed process while leaving other VPS workloads alone.

  • Encoder service restart: starts the encoder process again after an exit or system boot.
  • VPS reboot: restarts the whole virtual server and interrupts every process running on it. Contabo describes its control-panel reboot as shutting down and restarting the server, and advises using the operating system when it is accessible. See Contabo’s reboot guidance.

A restart policy is not an uptime guarantee. It cannot make an unavailable video file readable, correct an invalid YouTube key, restore a failed network route, or prove that viewers are receiving a healthy picture and sound. YouTube’s reviewed help pages do not promise that every interrupted encoder will resume the same broadcast or specify a universal reconnect grace period. Check the event in Live Control Room after a restart.

Before configuring systemd

Confirm the operating system and resources

Contabo offers VPS plan families with different shared CPU, memory, storage, and network resources. Check the VPS documentation and confirm the distribution and available resources on your actual server before installing an encoder or applying service instructions: Contabo VPS product documentation. The service approach below is general Linux guidance; package names, service accounts, paths, and encoder syntax vary by distribution and installation.

Prove the encoder command works interactively

Install your chosen encoder using the instructions for your distribution. Run its intended command manually with a test source before putting it under systemd. Confirm that it can read the source, connect to YouTube, and remain running in the foreground. A service manager supervises the process it starts; a command that daemonizes itself or exits after launching a child process may not be supervised as intended.

Get the right YouTube URL and key

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Use the server URL and stream key shown for that stream in your encoder; do not assume an endpoint copied from another setup. YouTube says the stream key functions like a password and address that lets YouTube accept the feed, so keep it private. YouTube’s encoder setup is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and its key and stream options at Manage live stream settings.

Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it and YouTube supplies the endpoint. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires the rtmps protocol, a valid ingestion server and path, and port 443; a wrong protocol, host, or port can prevent connection. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Configure the encoder as a systemd service

Use the following sequence as an implementation outline, not a universal copy-and-paste unit. Adapt the unit name, service user, working directory, environment-file path, and encoder command to the installed Linux distribution and your media source. • 【Dual 2.5GbE LAN Ports for Advanced Networking】 Experience fast wired network transmission speeds up to 2500Mbps without lagging or buffering. The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
  1. Store the key outside scripts and public service files. Put the stream key in a root-owned environment file, or another secret store appropriate to your system, and restrict access so only the service and administrators can read it. Do not paste a real key into public scripts, a world-readable unit, or a shell command that could be retained in shell history. Refer to it from the encoder command using the mechanism supported by that encoder and service configuration.
  2. Create a unit for the foreground command. Define the correct executable, arguments, working directory, and a dedicated service user with permission to read the source and secret. Configure a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure or Restart=always, and a modest RestartSec delay. Choose the policy deliberately: on-failure restarts after an unsuccessful exit, while always also restarts after a clean exit unless systemd is told to stop the service. Avoid a zero-delay retry loop.
  3. Reload systemd and enable the unit. After saving the unit in the appropriate systemd location, reload the manager configuration, enable the unit so it starts at boot, and start it. Use the exact unit name you chose. Commands commonly used on systemd-based Linux systems are sudo systemctl daemon-reload, sudo systemctl enable --now your-stream.service, and sudo systemctl status your-stream.service. Confirm systemd reports the expected unit and inspect any error before relying on it.
  4. Read the service logs. Use sudo journalctl -u your-stream.service to inspect output; add -f to follow new entries while testing. Look for source-read errors, authentication or connection failures, and repeated exits. Replace your-stream.service with the actual unit name.
  5. Verify the YouTube feed. In Live Control Room, check the preview, stream health, and any messages. A unit showing “active” only tells you about the local process; it does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed or that the event is live.

Use YouTube encoder settings that match the source

Automatic restarting does not compensate for incompatible or unstable encoder settings. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use the current table in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the exact combination you intend to stream rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

  • Choose a resolution and frame rate supported by the source, encoder, VPS capacity, and available upload bandwidth.
  • Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for that resolution, frame rate, and codec, and avoid setting a bitrate that exceeds stable network capacity.
  • Set a constant bitrate and a keyframe interval of two seconds where your encoder supports the recommended configuration; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Test the chosen settings before the intended broadcast and monitor YouTube’s stream health, as YouTube recommends.

YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options are distinct from systemd’s restart policy. The former control encoder-triggered start and stop behavior in YouTube’s stream settings; the latter supervises a Linux process. Confirm the desired behavior for the specific event in Live Control Room rather than assuming that a systemd restart also determines YouTube event state.

Test crash recovery and boot recovery

Test an encoder exit

  1. Use a test event or otherwise safe test window, and first confirm the stream is healthy in Live Control Room.
  2. Stop the encoder service deliberately using sudo systemctl stop your-stream.service. This is an intentional systemd stop, so systemd will not treat it like an unexpected process crash and relaunch it under the usual restart policies.
  3. To test the restart policy itself, terminate the encoder process while leaving the service active, or use another controlled method appropriate to your unit. Check systemctl status and the journal to confirm systemd starts the process again after the configured delay.
  4. Check Live Control Room for the resulting feed and event state. Do not infer that the same broadcast resumed just because the encoder process returned.

Test a VPS reboot separately

If recovery after server reboot is a requirement, test it separately during a maintenance window. Because the unit is enabled at boot, it should be started as the operating system comes up; verify the service logs and YouTube event after the VPS is reachable. A process restart test does not test boot recovery, and a reboot interrupts all workloads on the VPS.

Troubleshoot common restart failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Service does not start at boot Unit was not enabled, unit configuration was not reloaded, or the unit has a boot-time dependency or path problem. Check systemctl is-enabled your-stream.service, systemctl status your-stream.service, and the journal. Confirm the unit name, executable, working directory, permissions, and that you reloaded systemd after editing.
Service repeatedly restarts The source, command, credentials, permissions, network, or ingest settings remain invalid; automatic retries cannot correct them. Read journalctl -u your-stream.service for the first failure, fix its cause, then restart the service. Keep a delay in the restart policy to avoid a tight loop.
Encoder runs but YouTube shows no healthy feed The encoder may not be reaching the correct ingest URL, may be using an invalid key, or may be producing an unsupported or unhealthy stream. Verify the URL and key in Live Control Room, use the displayed RTMPS endpoint and port 443 where supported, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages alongside encoder logs.
Stream drops after reconnect and does not resume as expected Local process recovery and YouTube’s broadcast/event state are separate. A successful encoder restart does not guarantee continuity of the same event. Check the selected event and its state in Live Control Room, and confirm the configured auto-start/auto-stop behavior. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not establish a universal reconnect grace period.
Systemd says active, but viewers do not see reliable video or audio “Active” describes the service process, not end-to-end stream health. Check preview, stream health, and YouTube messages; inspect encoder output, source readability, bitrate suitability, and network stability.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to configuring and maintaining a VPS encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The stream is sent to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera.
