Android can automatically back up your SMS and MMS messages to the Google Account connected to your phone. Open Settings > Google > All services > Backup (or search Settings for Backup), enable Backup by Google One, choose the account you will use on the replacement phone, and tap Back up now to start an immediate copy. Keep the old phone connected to Wi-Fi and powered until Backup details show a current save.
Restoring is tied to that same Google Account. During setup of a new Android phone, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to the account, and choose the available backup. Messages may also be restored after a factory reset; a phone running an older Android version than the source can produce an incomplete transfer.
What does Android’s automatic text-message backup include?
The built-in Android backup is an account-based cloud backup rather than a local SMS export. Google says phone data is automatically backed up to your Google Account, and its standard backup categories include the following:

When Google Messages is used, RCS messages receive additional backup treatment. RCS is a separate messaging standard from SMS and MMS, so treat it as an additional capability rather than proof that every conversation in every messaging app will be copied.

The copy is uploaded to Google. Google says backups are encrypted in transit, and some data receives additional encryption tied to the phone’s screen lock. The process does not require a USB cable, microSD card, USB drive, or other physical accessory.
There is an important boundary: Android backs up what the system and each app permit it to back up. A messaging app may keep account history, attachments, preferences, or a private database outside the standard device backup. Google cautions that some apps cannot back up or restore all of their own settings and data. If a conversation is important, verify it on the replacement phone rather than assuming that a completed device backup guarantees every app’s full history.
How do I turn on automatic SMS and MMS backups?
Use the following setup on the phone that currently contains your messages. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android release, but the Google backup controls are present on supported Android devices.

- Connect the phone to a reliable Wi-Fi network. A cellular connection can be interrupted or unavailable during setup, while Wi-Fi gives the backup a stable route to Google.
- Make sure the phone has a screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. Google recommends a secure screen lock for backed-up data and uses it for additional protection on some data.
- Keep the phone powered while the first backup runs, especially if it contains a large message history or many MMS attachments.
- Leave enough time to verify the result. Do not begin a factory reset or trade-in process simply because the backup button has finished animating.
2. Open Android’s backup controls
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- Tap All services, then Backup.
Some Android versions show Settings > Google > Backup without the All services step. If you cannot find either route, use the Settings search field and search for Backup. Motorola documents an equivalent path as Settings > System > Backup.
3. Enable the Google backup switch
- Turn on Backup by Google One, or the equivalent Android backup switch shown on your phone.
- Under Account storage, confirm the Google Account that should receive the backup. Use the account you intend to sign in with on the replacement phone, not merely an account that happens to be available on the device.
- If more than one Google Account is listed, read the full account name carefully. The restore process will look for the backup under this exact account.
4. Confirm that messages are covered
Open Backup details and check that SMS and MMS appears in the listed data. This confirms that the phone is including text messages in its device backup rather than relying only on an app-specific export.
Use this screen as a preflight check before a phone move. It can also reveal that the wrong account is selected or that the device has not produced a recent backup. If SMS/MMS is not listed, do not assume that tapping the button again will make old messages appear; first resolve the backup configuration shown on the page.
5. Start the first backup immediately
Tap Back up now if you want to create a current copy instead of waiting for the next automatic run. Automatic backup remains enabled after the manual backup finishes, so future device backups can continue without another button press.
Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the status changes. If the phone goes offline or runs out of power, reconnect it and use Back up now again. The manual command is useful before a planned upgrade because it gives you a known starting point for the move.

How long does an Android message backup take, and how can I verify it?
Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. The time depends on the amount of data and the phone’s connection, so do not erase, trade in, or factory-reset the old phone immediately after tapping Back up now.
Before handing over the old device, return to Settings > Google > Backup (or the manufacturer’s equivalent) and inspect Backup details. Check three items:
- The Google Account name is the account you will use on the new phone.
- The displayed last-backup time is recent enough for your move.
- SMS and MMS is present in the backed-up categories.
If the time is stale, reconnect to Wi-Fi, leave the phone powered, and tap Back up now again. Wait until the status reflects the new save before wiping the device. A status that merely says backup is enabled is not the same as a recently completed backup.
For a cautious move, record the last-backup time, then check it again shortly before the old phone is erased. This two-check approach catches an account switch, a paused backup, or a connection problem that occurred after your first inspection.
Where are my Android SMS backups stored?
They are stored in the Google Account selected under Account storage in the phone’s Backup settings. This is a cloud copy associated with the account, not a browsable folder of message files on the phone and not a local archive on removable storage.
You normally access that copy indirectly: Android offers it during setup of another phone or after a factory reset. The Backup screen on the original device is the practical place to confirm which account holds the copy and when it was last updated. You should not expect to open a document in Google Drive and read the messages one by one.
Because the backup is account-based, signing in with a different Google Account on the replacement phone can make a valid backup appear to be missing. Confirm the account before troubleshooting the phone, and avoid removing the old account until the transfer is complete.

How do I restore text messages on a new Android phone?
Restore the messages while setting up the replacement phone. The replacement should run the same Android version as the old phone or a newer one; restoring a backup made on a higher Android version to a lower version is not supported and can leave the transfer incomplete.

- Turn on the replacement phone and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Sign in with the same Google Account selected in the old phone’s Account storage setting.
- When Android presents available backups, choose the backup from the old device. Check the device name or date when more than one backup is offered.
- Follow the setup prompts to restore the phone’s data, including SMS and MMS when they are listed in the backup.
- Leave the new phone online while restoration finishes. Some items may arrive during setup and others may complete shortly afterward.
Google’s transfer guidance allows you to skip Set up using another device and choose to restore data from an old device when a Google One backup exists. Message restoration can occur during initial setup or after a factory reset.
After setup, open the phone’s messaging app and check several points in the history: recent conversations, older threads, and a message with an MMS attachment if those are important to you. This is a practical confirmation that restoration completed rather than an assumption based only on the setup screen.
What if the replacement phone is already set up?
If the restore choice is no longer offered, Android may require a factory reset before it will present the backup during setup. A reset deletes data currently on the replacement phone, so first back up anything you have added to that phone and confirm that you can recover it. Then reset the device and repeat the Wi-Fi, account sign-in, and backup-selection process.

If you do reset, make a separate copy of photos, downloads, contacts, or app data created on the new phone since its initial setup.
Why did some messages fail to restore?
Most incomplete transfers come from a mismatch between the backup and the replacement phone rather than from the SMS setting itself. Check these conditions in order:
- Wrong account: Verify that the new phone uses the exact Google Account shown under Account storage on the old phone.
- Backup not current: On the old phone, inspect the last-backup time and run Back up now while connected to Wi-Fi.
- Insufficient local space: Make sure the replacement phone has enough free storage to receive the restored data.
- No network connection: Keep the replacement phone online while Android retrieves the backup.
- Older Android version: The replacement should be on the same Android version as the source or a newer one. A lower version is not supported for restoring a higher-version backup.
- App-specific data: Android cannot guarantee that every app will restore all of its own settings or data, even when the device backup itself completes.
- Wrong message type: Standard SMS/MMS coverage does not make every RCS or third-party-app conversation identical. Google Messages receives additional treatment for RCS, but verify those conversations individually.
If the backup is visible but messages are still missing, confirm that SMS and MMS was listed in Backup details on the old phone. If it was absent, the device backup did not include those messages and repeating setup on the new phone will not add them retroactively.
When the backup is current and the account and Android versions match, restart the new phone, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and allow the restore process more time. If the restore was skipped during setup, the supported remedy may be a reset and a fresh setup rather than repeatedly searching the messaging app for a hidden import command.
Why do backup menus look different on Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and other phones?
Android manufacturers and software releases can rename or regroup the same controls. Google’s generic route is Settings > Google > All services > Backup, while some devices shorten it to Settings > Google > Backup. Motorola’s documented route is Settings > System > Backup.

Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and other phones may display different headings or place the switch in a system-level page. Search Settings for Backup, open the result that leads to the Google or device-backup page, and look for the switch labeled Backup by Google One or an equivalent Android backup control. Do not assume that a different label means SMS support is missing; use Backup details to verify the categories on that specific phone.
Manufacturer transfer utilities can appear alongside Google’s option. They may offer a cable or local-device transfer, but those are separate workflows. For the automatic cloud method described here, follow the Google Account and Backup details screens, and do not buy a cable, memory card, or USB drive simply to enable SMS backup.
Is built-in Google backup enough for every text-message move?
For moving supported SMS and MMS data to another Android phone, the built-in backup is the simplest path: it runs automatically, restores during device setup, and uses the Google Account already associated with the phone. It does not create a standalone file that you can browse, email, or store on a USB drive.

A separate export tool is worth considering only when you specifically need a local archive, a file you can inspect independently, or a workflow outside Android’s normal setup. Evaluate any such app for automatic scheduling, cloud versus local storage, SMS/MMS and RCS coverage, encryption and privacy, portability between Android versions, and the additional permissions it requests. Those tools follow their own restore process; they are not interchangeable with the Google backup shown in Android setup.
If your only goal is to have texts appear on a new Android phone, adding a second tool can create another account, another permission set, and another restore step without solving a problem. Use the built-in method first, then add an export workflow only for a specific requirement such as an independently readable archive.

- Open the Google or system Backup page on the old phone.

- If it is not current, connect to Wi-Fi, keep the phone powered, and tap Back up now.
- Allow as much as 24 hours for Google’s backup process, then verify the status again.
- Set up the replacement phone with the same account and a compatible Android version whenever possible.
- Open the messaging app on the replacement and spot-check recent, old, and multimedia conversations.
- Only after verification should you factory-reset, erase, or hand over the old phone.
This order protects against the two most expensive mistakes: erasing a phone before its latest messages are uploaded, and discovering after the handoff that the replacement used a different account or an unsupported Android version.

Does Android backup include RCS conversations?
When Google Messages is handling the conversations, Google provides additional backup treatment for RCS. RCS is not identical to standard SMS/MMS, so confirm the restored conversations on the replacement phone rather than assuming every chat type will behave the same way.
Will every messaging app restore all of its settings?
No. Google states that some apps cannot back up or restore all of their own settings and data. Messages covered by Android’s SMS/MMS backup are separate from private data held entirely inside an app’s own account or database.
