The app is the software; Apple now calls the subscription service Apple TV. Menu names and availability vary by device, software version, and region.
Before you start
- Connect your smart TV or streaming device to the internet.
- Have the Apple Account credentials for the account with the subscription. If you do not have an Apple Account, Apple provides account creation through its account website.
- Check whether the Apple TV app is already installed. If it is not, search the device’s app store for “Apple TV.” Apple’s general instruction is to “Look for the Apple TV app on the home screen or apps folder of your Smart TV or streaming device (you may need to install the app first), then open the app and sign in to your Apple Account.” Apple Support: Watch on Smart TVs and streaming devices.

On supported setups, the app may show a QR code or a sign-in code. Scan the QR code with a phone, or visit link.apple.com and enter the displayed code if prompted. Other smart TVs
Check the home screen and app store on your Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, VIZIO, Hisense, or VIDAA TV. Apple’s setup guidance gives platform-specific navigation for supported models. Sony TVs from 2018–2020 may need current TV software; Sony models from 2021 onward use the Android TV or Google TV instructions. Hisense Roku and Android TV sets follow the respective Roku or Android TV steps. Exact labels can differ by model and software. If the app is not listed, check Apple’s compatibility guidance and your TV manufacturer’s software updates.
For device-specific setup guidance, see Apple’s guide to getting the Apple TV app on a smart TV or streaming device and Apple’s platform instructions.

- Follow the installation instructions.
- Open Apple TV from Entertainment or My games and apps, then sign in if prompted.

If you cannot find the app or sign in
- The app is missing: Search the device’s official app store and check Apple’s compatibility information. Availability depends on the exact model and may vary by country or region.
- The app will not install or launch: Check for TV or device software updates, then try again. Menu names and requirements differ by model.
- You cannot type credentials easily: If offered, use QR-code or mobile-device sign-in, or choose remote sign-in and follow the on-screen steps.
- Your account does not show the subscription: Confirm you signed in with the Apple Account associated with it.
- You cannot start a subscription or buy content in the app: Some device apps support watching but not in-app purchases. Start the subscription or make the purchase through a supported route, then sign in on the TV with the same Apple Account.
Starting a subscription is different from watching one
A device can let you watch content tied to your Apple Account without letting you subscribe, buy, or rent from that app. Apple says Android TV and Google TV do not support in-app purchases, and Fire TV purchase support depends on the device and region. Apple’s UK support page specifies that purchases of other content are unavailable on Fire TV in the US and that purchases are unavailable on Fire TV in other regions, Android TV, and Sony TV devices. These purchase limits should not be confused with whether the app can play an existing subscription.
Apple lists tv.apple.com and the Apple TV app on supported Apple devices, PC, smart TVs, Android mobile devices, and compatible streaming devices as subscription routes; availability can vary by region, including for the Google Play version. Once subscribed, use the same Apple Account in the TV app.

Choosing another way to watch
If your TV does not support the Apple TV app, first check whether a streaming device you already own or a compatible game console offers it. A Roku device is one possible route because Apple documents installation through Roku’s channel interface, but verify that the exact model and region currently support the app. If your TV supports AirPlay 2, a compatible Apple device may also work. You do not need extra hardware if the app is already available on your TV or console.
