Samsung software is optional for ordinary storage use; install Samsung Portable SSD Software only if you want to enable password protection. Before turning that on, record the password securely: Samsung says a forgotten password requires a factory reset through a customer service center, which erases the drive’s data.
How do I connect a Samsung T7 to a computer or phone?
- Check your device and port. Samsung lists support for Windows 7 or later, Mac OS X 10.10 or later, and Android Lollipop or later. Those operating-system listings do not guarantee that every phone, tablet, adapter, or configuration supports external USB storage; check your device’s USB-storage support and connector requirements. Samsung’s T7 support and specifications lists the compatibility information.
- Choose a suitable connection. The T7 uses USB 3.2 Gen 2, rated at 10 Gbps, and Samsung lists backward compatibility. Use the supplied or another suitable data cable that fits both the drive and the host port. A charging-only cable may not transfer files; an adapter may be needed when the connectors do not match.
- Connect the drive. Plug the cable into the T7 and the computer or mobile device. Look for it in the operating system’s file manager or storage interface. The exact name, prompt, and file-management steps vary by host, so follow the instructions for your device if it asks how to handle external storage.
- Check the existing contents before making changes. If the drive contains files, open it and confirm they are accessible before copying or deleting anything. Do not format it simply to make it appear in a particular format or device.
Samsung advertises maximum transfer rates of up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write. These are manufacturer specifications, not guaranteed results: actual performance depends on the host, port, cable, and other configuration details. Samsung’s specifications also identify the drive’s USB interface.
Do I need Samsung software to use the T7?
No. Connecting the drive and accessing it as external storage does not require you to enable password security. Samsung describes security mode as optional in its Samsung Portable SSD T7 User Manual. Use Samsung Portable SSD Software if you want to configure that optional security mode; consult the appropriate regional Samsung support page for the current software download for your device and region, since availability and versions can change.
Should I format the T7?
Only if you have a specific compatibility or file-system need. The right format depends on which devices and operating systems you plan to use; there is no single format established here as best for every setup. Formatting can erase files, so back up anything important before starting. If you are unsure which format your devices need, check their documentation before formatting rather than experimenting with the drive.

How do I turn on password protection?
- Install Samsung Portable SSD Software from the relevant Samsung support page and connect the T7.
- Open the software and follow its on-screen steps to configure security mode and set a password. The exact screens may vary with the software version and platform.
- Save the password in a password manager or another secure record that you can access later. Do not rely on memory alone if losing access to the drive would matter.
Samsung lists AES 256-bit hardware encryption and optional password protection for the T7. These specifications describe product capabilities; they do not mean password protection is automatically enabled. See Samsung’s T7 specifications and the T7 manual.
What happens if I forget my Samsung T7 password?
Samsung’s manual warns that if you forget the password, the T7 must be restored to factory settings through Samsung customer service centers, and all user data on the drive will be lost. Samsung does not describe password recovery that preserves the data. Keep a secure record of the password and a separate backup of files you cannot afford to lose.
