Before selecting 8000 Hz, confirm that your exact mouse, wireless receiver, firmware, USB connection and PC support that mode. An “8K” label alone does not guarantee that a mouse can use 8000 Hz wirelessly with its included receiver. Once compatibility is confirmed, update the device, position its receiver well, and compare 1000, 4000 and 8000 Hz in the games you play.
What 8000 Hz polling changes
Polling rate is how often a mouse reports data to the PC. At 1000 Hz, the nominal report interval is 1 millisecond; at 4000 Hz it is 0.25 ms; at 8000 Hz it is 0.125 ms. Razer says its 8000 Hz devices can send up to eight times as much data per second as at 1000 Hz. These are report intervals, not total click-to-screen latency, and they do not guarantee a perceptible improvement for every player. Razer’s figures and recommendations are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements. Razer HyperPolling technology
Higher report rates also ask more of the host system and game. Razer cautions that some older game engines do not handle high polling rates well. Start at a stable baseline and keep the faster setting only if it behaves smoothly and feels useful in your own games.
Check compatibility before changing settings
Look up the exact mouse model and verify that its manufacturer supports 8000 Hz wirelessly with the specific receiver or dongle you have. Some products require a separately sold receiver; a mouse’s advertised maximum rate may not apply to its standard wireless connection. Check the current support page for your model, because device support and firmware instructions can change.

Razer Viper V3 HyperSpeed example: Razer documents true 8000 Hz wireless polling for this mouse when paired with the separately sold HyperPolling Wireless Dongle. Razer also specifies current mouse firmware and a USB Type-C 2.0 high-speed compliant cable for this configuration. Follow the instructions for the exact model and accessory; these requirements should not be assumed to apply to other brands or mice. Razer Viper V3 HyperSpeed product and setup information
Razer’s November 6, 2023 rollout announcement named the Viper V2 Pro, DeathAdder V3 Pro, Cobra Pro, Basilisk V3 Pro and Viper V3 HyperSpeed. That is a dated rollout list, not a guarantee of the current supported lineup. Check Razer’s current HyperPolling guidance and the support page for your particular mouse before proceeding.

Set up the mouse and receiver
- Install the manufacturer’s configuration app. Use the software specified for your mouse to inspect its settings and check for available mouse and receiver firmware. For Razer HyperPolling devices, Razer directs users to Synapse device settings; its 2023 rollout instructions also referenced a firmware updater. Use current model-specific instructions rather than relying on an old rollout list. Razer HyperPolling guidance
- Update compatible firmware. Apply the latest firmware offered for the exact mouse and receiver, following the vendor’s instructions. Do not disconnect or interrupt a device while a firmware update is in progress.
- Connect the correct receiver and cable. Use the receiver required for 8000 Hz wireless operation and connect it as the manufacturer directs. For the Viper V3 HyperSpeed example, Razer specifies its HyperPolling Wireless Dongle and a USB Type-C 2.0 high-speed compliant cable. The dongle can be connected directly to an available PC USB port for the vendor’s polling test.
- Place the receiver near the mouse. Razer recommends line of sight and a distance within 30 cm. Keep it away from active USB 3 hubs, and use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or wired connections for nearby wireless devices where practical to reduce interference. Razer’s receiver placement recommendations
- Set a comfortable DPI and sensitivity first. DPI is a separate setting from polling rate; this guidance does not establish a universal minimum DPI for 8000 Hz. If consistent pointer sensitivity is your goal, turn off Windows Enhance Pointer Precision before comparing rates.
Choose and test a polling rate
| Polling rate | Nominal report interval | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1000 Hz | 1 ms | Use as a stable baseline for comparison. |
| 4000 Hz | 0.25 ms | Try as an intermediate rate if 8000 Hz is unstable or offers no useful feel. |
| 8000 Hz | 0.125 ms | Use only when the mouse, receiver, firmware, connection and game support it smoothly. |
In the configuration app, select the polling rate supported by your device. Test 1000 Hz first, then compare 4000 and 8000 Hz under the same game and system conditions. Use the manufacturer’s polling test utility as an initial check, then play a representative game: a utility result alone cannot establish that every game handles the rate well.
For Razer’s Viper V3 HyperSpeed guidance, connect the dongle directly to an available PC USB port, close background programs and move the mouse in a circular motion during the test. Follow the current instructions for your device if its utility or test procedure differs. Razer Viper V3 HyperSpeed setup guidance

Fix stutter, dropouts or inconsistent input
If the mouse becomes choppy, drops movement or behaves inconsistently at a high rate, troubleshoot one variable at a time:
- Recheck that the exact mouse and receiver support 8000 Hz wireless operation, then check for current firmware.
- Move the receiver into line of sight within 30 cm of the mouse. Keep it away from active USB 3 hubs and reduce nearby 2.4 GHz wireless traffic where possible.
- Close nonessential CPU-heavy applications, overlays and software that injects kernel-level drivers, then test again.
- Check the game’s input settings. Razer cites Valorant Raw Input Buffer and Overwatch High Precision Mouse Input as examples; confirm the current setting names and availability in the game version you use. Razer’s game-input guidance
- Turn off Windows Enhance Pointer Precision while tuning consistent sensitivity.
- Reduce the rate to 4000 Hz; if the issue remains, try 2000 Hz. Some older game engines or CPU-bound systems may not handle the higher report load well.
- If the problem persists, unplug and reconnect the device, then retest with the receiver positioned close to the mouse.
Choose the rate that works for your setup
Keep the highest rate that is both stable in the games you play and useful to you; 8000 Hz is an option, not a requirement. The cited Razer guidance does not provide a measured Viper V3 HyperSpeed battery-life comparison across polling rates, so it does not establish a specific runtime penalty. Nor does the report interval alone prove a competitive advantage.
