Charge the console, switch it on, open its game list, select a title with the available control, and press Start if that game requires it. The exact labels differ by model: a conventional handheld may have a directional control plus A, Select and Start buttons, while a single-button design may use its only button for confirmation or starting. Match every step to the labels printed on your console and its manual.
This guide uses the documented procedures for the Jaycar GT4295 and GT4280, and the VILCORN SF3500 instructions to explain the common setup flow without assuming that every handheld uses the same connector, button combination or shutdown method.
What “single-button” means on a handheld console
“Single-button” is not a universal technical standard. Some small retro consoles have one prominent action button alongside a directional control; others expect the same physical button to confirm a menu choice, start a game or pause it. Conventional controls may still be present on a particular model even when the product is advertised as single-button.
Before following any button instruction, inspect the legends on your unit. Look for a power switch or power key, a directional pad or arrow keys, an action/confirm button (often marked A), and any Select or Start controls. If your unit has only one control, the supplied guide should define whether a short press, a long press or a different menu screen assigns each function. The retrieved manuals do not establish a universal button combination for all handhelds, so do not assume that a sequence found for one model will work on another.

Identify the console and gather the correct accessories
Check the model label
Find the model number on the rear label, packaging or first page of the manual. The instructions below use three examples:
- GT4295: supplied with a USB Micro-B charging cable, an inbuilt 16GB microSD card and an RCA-to-3.5mm TV-out cable. Its manual documents a power switch, game selection, Select and Start functions.
- GT4280: its manual describes a 256-game list (the publication year is not stated in the retrieved manual), arrow-key browsing, A-button selection and Start to proceed or pause.
- SF3500: its instructions use a USB-C cable, a press-and-hold power key and a settings menu for items such as language, sound and brightness.
These differences are why a USB-C lead should not be forced into a Micro-B socket and why a GT4295 control sequence should not be treated as a requirement for an SF3500.
Inspect what is in the box
Keep the console, its supplied charging cable and the model manual together until setup is complete. If your package includes a TV-out lead or a microSD card, set those aside; they are not needed to start playing on the built-in screen. A replacement 16GB microSD card is appropriate only if your specific model accepts that capacity and the original card is missing or damaged.

Use the supplied cable and a suitable USB source
- Plug the supplied cable into the console’s charging socket. GT4295-style units use USB Micro-B; the SF3500 instructions use USB-C.
- Connect the other end to a suitable USB power source.
- Leave the unit connected until it is fully charged. The GT4295 manual says, “It is recommended to fully charge the unit before use.” The SF3500 instructions likewise recommend a full initial charge.
- Disconnect the cable only after the charge indication or the manual’s stated full-charge condition is reached.
The manuals supplied for these models do not state a universal charging time or battery percentage. Do not infer a fixed time from another console; use the indicator and instructions for your model.
If charging appears not to start
- Reseat both ends of the cable so the plug is fully inserted.
- Try the supplied cable again with a known suitable USB power source.
- Check that you are using the connector specified for the model rather than a physically incompatible lead.
- If the console still gives no charging indication, leave it connected long enough for the manual’s full-charge procedure, then follow the model’s support instructions instead of opening the case.
First power-on: the exact sequence
1. Turn the power on
With the initial charge complete, move the GT4295-style power switch to On. On a model with a momentary power key, such as the SF3500, press and hold the key until the display lights. A brief tap may not be sufficient on a press-and-hold design.
2. Wait for the menu
Give the console time to display its home screen or game list. Do not repeatedly toggle the switch while it is starting. If the display remains dark, use the troubleshooting branch later in this guide before changing files on a storage card.
3. Browse the game list
Use the directional control, arrow keys, page buttons or the single control assigned by your manual. The GT4280 documentation says its arrow keys cycle through games and pages. Other units may move one title at a time or open a separate page of titles.
4. Confirm the title
Highlight the game and press the model’s confirm/action button. On both GT4295 and GT4280, the A button performs this selection. If your console has one button, use the short-press or confirm action described in its guide.
5. Start the game
Some titles launch immediately after confirmation. Others show an additional screen. On the GT4295, the manual says, “Press the select button to insert a coin and the start button will start the selected game.” On the GT4280, Start proceeds to the game and can pause or unpause play. If your one-button model assigns starting to the same button used for confirmation, follow its on-screen prompt rather than pressing an unlabelled combination.

Controls you may encounter
Directional control or arrow keys
Use these to move through menus and, once a game is running, to control the character or cursor. GT4280 instructions specifically describe arrow keys for cycling through its game pages. A one-button console can still include directional input; “one-button” normally describes the action control, not the absence of movement input.
A or action/confirm
A commonly confirms a highlighted game. GT4295 and GT4280 both document A for selection. If your casing uses a different label, treat the printed label and manual as authoritative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSelect
On the GT4295, Select inserts a coin in the arcade-style game interface. It is not necessarily a general-purpose “back” key. Do not assume that Select has the same role on another model unless its instructions say so.
Start
GT4295 uses Start to begin the selected game after the coin action. GT4280 uses Start to proceed and to pause or unpause. On a one-button design, Start may be a long press or a menu command; use the documented behavior for that device.
Model comparison: documented setup differences
| Model | Charging connector and cable | Controls documented for menus and games | Games or storage | Display, audio and TV options | Power and shutdown behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jaycar GT4295 | USB Micro-B cable supplied | A selects; Select inserts a coin; Start begins the selected game | Inbuilt 16GB microSD card | RCA-to-3.5mm TV-out cable included; built-in display and audio details beyond this are not stated in the manual excerpt | Power switch; enters standby after up to 10 minutes idle, according to the GT4295 manual |
| Jaycar GT4280 | Not stated in the retrieved manual | Arrow keys browse; A selects; Start proceeds and pauses/unpauses | 256 games listed in the manual; publication year not stated | Not stated in the retrieved manual | Start pause behavior documented; shutdown method not stated in the retrieved manual |
| VILCORN SF3500 | USB-C cable | Press-and-hold power key; exact game-control mapping is not stated in the retrieved instructions | Not stated in the retrieved instructions | Settings menu includes language, sound and brightness | Use the model’s documented power-key procedure; a universal shutdown combination is not established |
“Not stated” means the cited manual material does not establish that specification; it does not mean the feature is absent.
Set language, sound and brightness before a long session
If your console provides a settings menu, configure comfort options while you are still at the home screen. The SF3500 instructions document language, sound and brightness controls. Choose a readable language, set a comfortable brightness for the room and adjust sound before starting a long game. Other models may omit one or more of these settings, so do not search for a menu that the manual does not describe.
Keep the volume low when first testing the device, then raise it gradually. If there is no software volume control, use the hardware control provided by that model. The supplied material does not establish a common headphone, speaker or volume-button layout across these consoles.
Play, pause and return to the game list
Starting an arcade-style title
On the GT4295 flow, highlight a title, press A, press Select to insert a coin and press Start to begin. The coin step applies to the arcade-style interface described by that manual; it is not a rule for every handheld game.
Pausing
GT4280 documentation says Start pauses and unpauses play. If Start does not pause your model, check its guide rather than holding random buttons. A one-button unit may pause with a long press, a second press after a menu appears or no pause function at all.

Returning to the list
Leave the game using the documented menu or exit control. The manuals supplied here do not support a universal “hold two buttons to quit” shortcut. If no exit command is visible, consult the model’s instructions before removing power.
Shut down safely and understand standby
Use the normal power control
After exiting the game, use the console’s power switch or documented shutdown command. Do not pull the charging cable as a substitute for shutdown while a menu or storage operation is active.
GT4295 standby
The GT4295 manual says the unit enters standby after up to 10 minutes of inactivity. That 10-minute figure is specific to the Jaycar GT4295 manual; its publication year is not stated in the retrieved material. Standby is not the same as a universal automatic shutdown rule, so wake or power the unit using the control described for that model.
Protect storage
If the console contains a microSD card, do not remove it while the device is writing. The GT4295 package includes an inbuilt 16GB microSD card. Changing folders or files without instructions can make the game list unavailable; leave the card structure unchanged unless the model’s manual explains it.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The screen stays blank
- Connect the supplied cable and complete the model’s full-charge procedure.
- Confirm that the cable is seated at both the console and USB power source.
- For a switch-operated model, move the switch to On. For a press-and-hold design, hold the power key until the display lights.
- Wait for startup before pressing other controls.
- If there is still no image, stop changing storage files and use the manufacturer’s support instructions for the exact model.
The menu responds but a game will not launch
- Return to the game list using the documented exit control.
- Highlight the title again and press the confirm/action control.
- Press Start if the selected title requires a separate start step.
- For the GT4295 arcade flow, perform the documented Select-then-Start sequence.
- If the title still fails, do not delete or rename files until the manual explains the storage structure.
The buttons do something unexpected
Compare the physical labels with the model number in the manual. A short press and a long press may have different meanings, and GT4295, GT4280 and SF3500 already demonstrate different layouts. There is no evidence for one button map that applies to all single-button handhelds.

The console enters standby while you are away
On GT4295, inactivity of up to 10 minutes can trigger standby. Press the documented wake or power control, then resume through the menu. Other models may use a different timeout or none at all; their behavior is not established by the GT4295 manual.
Using TV output and replacement accessories
GT4295 TV output
The GT4295 package includes an RCA-to-3.5mm TV-out cable. Connect it only as shown in that model’s manual and select the television input that matches the cable. The cable is optional for handheld play; the built-in screen remains the simplest first-use setup. The supplied documentation does not establish TV-output support for GT4280 or SF3500.
Choosing a replacement charging cable
Match the connector exactly: a GT4295-style device requires USB Micro-B, while the SF3500 instructions specify USB-C. Connector shape alone does not prove that a cable is suitable; use the model’s stated charging specification and a suitable USB power source. Never force a plug into the socket.
Replacing a microSD card
A 16GB microSD card is relevant to the GT4295 because that model is supplied with an inbuilt 16GB card. Replace it only when the model accepts the card and you have a way to reproduce the required files and folder structure. The manuals cited here do not provide a universal card-imaging procedure, so do not format or reorganize a card as a first troubleshooting step.

- Model number identified and matching manual available.
- Correct cable selected: USB Micro-B for GT4295-style hardware or USB-C for SF3500-style hardware.
- Initial charge completed.
- Power switch moved to On, or power key held as required.
- Game list opened with the documented directional or single-control input.
- Title confirmed with A or the model’s assigned action.
- Start pressed when the game requires it; Select used only where documented.
- Language, sound and brightness adjusted where a settings menu exists.
- Game exited and the console shut down using its documented control.
- Storage card left in place while the console may be writing.
What to remember when the controls are unfamiliar
The dependable pattern is charge, power on, browse, confirm and start—but the physical actions are model-specific. GT4295 uses A, Select and Start in an arcade-style sequence; GT4280 uses arrow keys, A and Start for browsing, selection and pause; SF3500 demonstrates that a USB-C connector, press-and-hold power key and settings menu may appear on a different design. Treat those manuals as separate control maps, read the labels on your own unit and avoid undocumented button combinations or storage changes.
