The correct button-remapping procedure depends on the exact controller model. First read the name printed on the controller, packaging, or Xbox accessory listing; then use that model’s manual. For the PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S, setup is a direct USB connection and rear-button assignments are programmed from the controller itself. PowerA’s Nano Enhanced Wired Controller is a separate compact product with its own manual and Gamer HQ App path, so do not assume the Enhanced controller’s button sequence applies to Nano or another compact Xbox controller.

This guide gives the complete PowerA Enhanced procedure, explains what its rear buttons can copy, shows how to clear an assignment, and provides a model-safe troubleshooting workflow for controllers whose remaps stop working.

Identify the controller before changing anything

“Compact Xbox controller” describes a size category, not one universal control system. Controllers can differ in their connection method, programmable-button layout, storage for assignments, app support, and compatibility with a particular Xbox generation. A procedure that works on one PowerA model may be wrong for another model, even when both have rear buttons.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Brand and full model name: look on the front, rear label, packaging, or the Xbox accessory listing.
  • Console generation: check whether the controller is intended for Xbox Series X|S, another Xbox console, or more than one platform.
  • Connection type: note whether it is wired, wireless, or supplied with a removable cable.
  • Programmable controls: count the rear buttons or paddles and note their labels, such as AGR and AGL.
  • Official support path: find the manual and, if the manufacturer provides one, the companion app for that exact model.

If the name is unclear, do not start pressing program buttons at random. A flashing LED can indicate a different mode on another controller. Identify the model first, then follow its documentation.

PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller: connection and first setup

The procedure below is for the PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S described by PowerA’s official manual. It uses a USB cable and two rear Advanced Gaming Buttons, labelled AGR and AGL.

Connect the controller to an Xbox console

  1. Connect the USB cable to an available USB port on the Xbox console.
  2. Connect the other end to the controller’s Micro-USB port.
  3. If the console is off, press the Xbox button until the console powers on.
  4. If the console is already on, connect the cable and check that the controller’s connection LED illuminates.

The cable must be connected at both ends. If the connection indicator does not light, reseat the plug at the console and controller before attempting any remapping. The manual’s setup sequence does not require an app for the basic wired connection.

Confirm that the controller is responding

Open a game or the Xbox interface and test the ordinary face buttons, bumpers, triggers, sticks, and D-pad. This separates a connection problem from a mapping problem: if standard controls do not respond, fix the USB connection first; if standard controls work but a rear button does not, proceed to assignment mode.

How to program the rear Advanced Gaming Buttons

On the PowerA Enhanced controller, a rear button receives a copy of one supported source input. You can assign AGR, AGL, or both independently.

Assign one rear button

  1. Press the Program Button on the back of the controller. The LED Connection Indicator flashes to show that the controller is in assignment mode.
  2. Press one source input: A, B, X, Y, LB, RB, LT, RT, left-stick press, right-stick press, or a D-pad input.
  3. Press the rear Advanced Gaming Button that should perform that action: AGR or AGL.

The source input is the action being copied; AGR or AGL is the destination button. For example, to make AGR perform the A-button action, enter assignment mode, press A, and then press AGR. To configure the other rear button, repeat the sequence and press AGL at the final step.

Supported source inputs

The manual lists the following inputs as assignable sources:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Input group Available sources
Face buttons A, B, X, Y
Bumpers LB, RB
Triggers LT, RT
Stick clicks Left-stick press, right-stick press
Directional control D-pad

Only the inputs listed by the manual are established as sources for this assignment method. The procedure does not establish mappings for arbitrary menu commands, analog-stick directions, button combinations, or macros. If you need one of those functions, check the exact controller’s manual rather than assuming the rear-button system supports it.

Use assignments in a game

After assigning a rear button, return to the game and test it in a low-risk situation such as a menu, practice area, or noncompetitive match. Verify both the original button and the rear button. The original button should continue to perform its normal action; the rear button is an additional way to send the assigned input, not a replacement that removes the original control.

Test each rear button separately. This catches a common setup error in which the source button was pressed correctly but the other rear destination was selected at the final step.

How to clear a rear-button assignment

To remove a mapping on the PowerA Enhanced controller, use the button that was previously assigned:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Hold the Program Button for two seconds.
  2. Wait for the LED to begin slowly flashing.
  3. Press the previously assigned button.

The manual describes this sequence as clearing the function assigned to that rear button. Clear one assignment at a time so you know which destination you are resetting. Afterward, test the rear button before creating a new assignment.

If you no longer remember which source input was assigned, test the rear button in a safe game screen, then use the identified source button in the clearing sequence. If the controller’s LED behavior does not match the manual, stop and verify that you have the Enhanced Wired model rather than another PowerA or third-party controller.

Do assignments survive unplugging?

PowerA states in the Enhanced Wired manual that Advanced Gaming Button assignments remain in memory even after the controller is disconnected. You should therefore be able to unplug the controller and reconnect it without reprogramming the rear buttons.

That persistence applies to the assignments stored by this controller’s programming system. It does not mean that every compact Xbox controller stores mappings the same way. A different model may use a temporary profile, an app-managed profile, or a different reset procedure. If a remap disappears on another model, consult that model’s manual rather than applying the Enhanced sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using Gamer HQ App without mixing model procedures

PowerA’s Enhanced Wired support page links the controller manual and the Gamer HQ App. PowerA also describes Gamer HQ on its Advantage Wired product page as a tool for testing and calibration and describes two mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons on that product line.

Use the app only when the exact controller model appears in the app’s supported-device list. The app can be a useful path when you need model-specific firmware, testing, or calibration support, but its availability and controls are not proof that every PowerA compact controller shares the same programming workflow.

When the app is the right next step

  • The controller is recognised as the exact model named in the support documentation.
  • You are investigating calibration or input-testing symptoms rather than only assigning a rear button.
  • The support page directs you to Gamer HQ for firmware or model-specific maintenance.

When not to use an app as a substitute for the manual

  • The controller is a Nano Enhanced Wired model or another compact model whose mapping sequence is not stated here.
  • The app lists a similar product but not the exact name and generation of your controller.
  • You are trying to infer whether a button can be mapped when the manual does not list it as a supported source.

Why a remap may appear to stop working

Work through the branches below in order. Each branch isolates a different failure mode without erasing a working assignment unnecessarily.

The controller is not connected

  • Check that the USB cable is connected to an Xbox USB port and the controller’s Micro-USB port.
  • If the Xbox was off, press the Xbox button to power it on.
  • If the Xbox was already on, reconnect the cable and confirm that the connection LED illuminates.
  • Test a normal face button or stick click before entering assignment mode again.

A rear remap cannot be tested reliably while the controller itself has no confirmed connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wrong rear button was programmed

Remember the order: Program Button, source input, destination rear button. If you pressed AGR when you intended AGL, clear the assignment associated with the button you programmed, then repeat the sequence with the intended destination.

The source input is not supported

The Enhanced manual lists A, B, X, Y, LB, RB, LT, RT, both stick presses, and the D-pad. An analog direction, a multi-button combination, or a game-specific command is not included in that list. Choose a listed source or check whether your exact model offers a different feature set.

The LED does not enter the expected mode

A normal assignment begins when the Program Button is pressed and the LED flashes. Clearing begins with a two-second hold and a slower flash. If the indicator behaves differently, release the button, verify the controller model, and read its manual. Do not continue with an undocumented timing sequence.

The assignment disappeared after disconnection

For the PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller, PowerA says assignments remain in memory after disconnection. Reconnect the same controller, test AGR and AGL, and confirm that you did not clear the assignment with the two-second Program-button procedure. If the issue occurs on a Nano, Xbox-branded, or other controller, use that model’s documentation because persistence is model-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app cannot test or calibrate the controller

Confirm that Gamer HQ supports the exact model, not merely a similarly named PowerA controller. If it is unsupported, return to the model’s manual and official support page. Do not use an app profile intended for another controller as evidence that the hardware supports the same buttons or mappings.

Compact-controller comparison: what to check before buying or configuring

When comparing compact Xbox controllers, use the same questions for every candidate. The available PowerA information establishes the following differences and unknowns:

Comparison point PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S Xbox-branded or other compact controller
Connection Wired USB connection; the manual specifies an Xbox USB port and controller Micro-USB port. Wired product family; exact connection and setup details should be checked in its manual. Not stated; verify the exact model.
Programmable controls Two Advanced Gaming Buttons, AGR and AGL. Not stated in the available model details; use the Nano manual. Not stated; verify button count and labels.
Assignment method Hardware sequence using the Program Button, a source input, and AGR or AGL. Separate manual and Gamer HQ App path; do not transfer the Enhanced sequence. Not stated; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Supported sources A, B, X, Y, LB, RB, LT, RT, both stick presses, and D-pad. Not stated; check the Nano manual. Not stated.
Persistence after disconnect PowerA says assignments remain in memory after disconnection. Not stated in the available details. Not stated.
Testing and calibration support Gamer HQ is linked from PowerA’s Enhanced Wired support materials when the exact model is supported. PowerA provides a separate support page and Gamer HQ path. Not stated.
Compatibility decision Designed for Xbox Series X|S; confirm suitability for any other console or PC use separately. Designed for Xbox Series X|S; confirm other-platform compatibility separately. Verify the intended Xbox generation and any PC support before purchase.

This comparison prevents a common mistake: treating “has rear buttons” as if it answered the more important questions about programmable inputs, storage, and software support.

A repeatable setup checklist

  1. Read the controller’s exact model name.
  2. Open that model’s official manual before connecting or remapping.
  3. Confirm the intended Xbox generation and connection type.
  4. Connect the cable or pair the controller using the documented method.
  5. Check the connection indicator and test ordinary controls.
  6. Identify the programmable-button labels and the supported source inputs.
  7. Assign one rear button and test it before assigning the second.
  8. Record which source input is assigned to AGR and AGL; this makes later clearing easier.
  9. Disconnect and reconnect only after testing, then verify whether the model retains its assignment.
  10. Use Gamer HQ only if the exact model is supported and you need its testing, calibration, or firmware path.

Practical mapping choices

Put a frequently pressed face button on a rear control

Choose A, B, X, or Y as the source when you want to keep a thumb on a stick while activating a face-button action. The Enhanced controller’s hardware procedure supports each of these four inputs.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move a bumper or trigger action to a rear control

LB, RB, LT, and RT are all listed sources. This can be useful when a game requires repeated shoulder or trigger presses, but the controller still sends the same input; it does not change the game’s sensitivity, trigger travel, or underlying control scheme.

Use a rear control for a stick click

Both left-stick press and right-stick press are supported sources. Assign the appropriate stick click, then test it in a game mode where the click has a clear, reversible effect.

Assign a D-pad input

The manual lists the D-pad as a supported source. Because “D-pad” covers directional controls, verify the exact direction you intend while programming and test it immediately afterward. If your model’s manual describes D-pad handling differently, follow that model-specific wording.

When to stop and obtain the correct manual

Stop using the Enhanced instructions if the controller has no AGR or AGL labels, uses a different program button, has a wireless-only design, or is identified as the Nano Enhanced Wired Controller. PowerA maintains a separate Nano support page and manual, which establishes that the Nano is its own compact product family. The safest setup is always the one written for the exact hardware in your hands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an unbranded or Xbox-branded compact controller, look for the model number on the rear label and use the manufacturer’s documentation. Without that identifier, there is no reliable universal sequence for powering on, entering mapping mode, clearing assignments, or determining whether mappings persist.
