You’ll need the Wi-Fi network name and password and an Amazon account. Amazon has separate instructions for the 2nd- and 3rd-generation models, so check your generation before relying on the included accessories.
What you need before setup
- A TV with an available HDMI port.
- The Fire TV Stick 4K and its remote, with batteries.
- A power source and the power cable and adapter supplied for your model.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password.
- An Amazon account, or the ability to create one during setup.
Included accessories vary by generation. Amazon’s 2nd Generation setup page lists a power cable, power adapter, AAA batteries and an optional HDMI extender. Its 3rd Generation page lists a USB-C power cable and remote batteries. Check the packaging and the guide for your exact model rather than assuming the contents are identical. Connect the Fire TV Stick and start setup
- Put the supplied batteries in the Fire TV remote.
- Connect the power cable to the Fire TV Stick and to its power source. For the 2nd Generation, Amazon instructs users to connect the power adapter to a wall outlet rather than the TV’s USB port.
- Insert the stick into an available HDMI port on the TV. If the stick cannot fit comfortably because of limited space around the port, use a suitable HDMI extender if one is available or needed.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input that the stick is plugged into. The Fire TV setup screen should appear.
- Pair the remote if prompted. If it does not pair, press and hold Home for about 10 seconds, following the pairing prompt on screen.
Connect to Wi-Fi
Follow the TV’s setup prompts to connect the stick to your home Wi-Fi. Depending on the screen shown, you can scan the displayed QR code with a phone or use the remote to select your network and enter its password. Check that you selected the right network and typed the password correctly if the connection fails. For Wi-Fi password problems, Amazon advises contacting your internet service provider.
Register the stick to your Amazon account
When prompted, sign in to your Amazon account to register the device. You can scan the QR code shown on the TV or, on a phone or computer, open amazon.com/code and enter the activation code displayed on the TV. Continue through any remaining on-screen prompts, including equipment-control setup if offered.

If your Amazon account has no password and the 3rd Generation setup asks for one, Amazon’s instructions say to press Back and follow the displayed address and verification-code flow. If you cannot sign in because you forgot your password, use Amazon’s account password reset process.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The remote will not pair
Hold the remote’s Home button for about 10 seconds and follow any pairing prompt on the TV. Amazon gives this guidance for both generations.

The Wi-Fi network is missing or the connection fails
Confirm that the network selected on the TV is the one you intend to use, then re-enter its password carefully. If the password itself is the problem, contact your internet service provider. Amazon also provides Wi-Fi setup troubleshooting.
The TV reports insufficient power
Check that the supplied cable and adapter are connected securely and follow the low-power guidance for your model. For the 2nd Generation, use the wall outlet and power adapter as Amazon specifies, not the TV’s USB port. The 3rd Generation troubleshooting guidance addresses insufficient-power notifications and compatible power accessories.

The stick does not fit or reach the HDMI port comfortably
An HDMI extender can help when nearby ports or the TV’s shape leave too little clearance. Check whether an extender came with your model before buying one; it is not necessary for every installation.
Amazon account sign-in fails
Reset the account password if you have forgotten it. If your account has no password and you are setting up a 3rd Generation stick, use the on-screen verification flow described during registration.

Amazon maintains separate setup instructions for the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Generation) and Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation), as well as a general Fire TV setup overview. Use the guide that matches the device in hand, especially if you need to check its power equipment or accessories.
