To set up Sony’s detachable CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive, first confirm that your console is a compatible PS5 Digital Edition/slim or PS5 Pro model. Shut the console down completely, unplug and cool it, remove the circular cover and short feet, clip the drive into place, then install the supplied cover and long feet. After reconnecting power, connect the PS5 to the internet and follow the on-screen pairing prompt. That online pairing is the registration step; there is no separate Sony account form described in the official setup instructions.
Finish by testing a supported PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD. If the drive is missing, pairing fails, or a disc is not recognized, update system software and work through Sony’s staged troubleshooting before contacting PlayStation Repairs.
Check whether your PS5 supports the drive
The accessory is Sony PlayStation Disc Drive model CFI-ZDD1. Sony’s product description says it is for PS5 Pro consoles and PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 model group (slim) and CFI-2100. A regional Sony setup guide also discusses the CFI-2000/7000 model groups. Because model-group labels and product names vary by region, use the exact model number printed on your console rather than relying only on the words “Digital Edition,” “slim,” or “PS5 Pro.”

Before ordering or opening the package, compare your console’s model number with the current CFI-ZDD1 compatibility information for your region. The drive is designed for compatible digital consoles and PS5 Pro systems that have the removable side cover and drive mounting points.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to identify the model
Look for the CFI model marking on the console label or packaging and match the complete model-group designation, not just a storage-size description. If a retailer lists a drive as “for PS5 slim,” verify that it is the Sony CFI-ZDD1 and that your particular CFI-2000, CFI-2100, or PS5 Pro group is included. A disc drive that fits the opening physically is not automatically compatible with every PS5 generation.
Keep the original parts
Set aside the circular cover removed from the console and the original short horizontal feet. Sony specifies that these parts are needed if you remove the disc drive later and return the console to its original configuration. Keep the drive’s supplied circular cover and long horizontal feet with the drive instead of discarding them.
What you need before starting
- A fully compatible PS5 console and the CFI-ZDD1 drive.
- A flat, stable surface covered with a soft, clean cloth.
- Access to the console’s AC and HDMI cables.
- An internet connection for first-time drive-to-console pairing.
- The latest available PS5 system software, preferably installed before physical installation.
Sony’s manual lists an operating-temperature range of 5 °C to 35 °C (41 °F to 95 °F). Do not perform the attachment while the console is hot. Before handling the drive, touch a metal-grounded object to discharge static electricity, and avoid touching the drive terminal or the connector inside the console.

Install the PS5 Disc Drive physically
Use this sequence for the physical installation. The console must be completely powered off, not in Rest Mode.
- Turn the PS5 off. Open the Control Center, select Power, and choose Turn Off PS5. Wait until the power indicator is fully off.
- Disconnect everything. Remove the AC power cord and all other cables. Move the console only after it is unplugged, and wait for it to cool.
- Position the console. Place it bottom-up on the soft cloth with the front edge facing you. Work on a flat surface so the console cannot slide while you release the cover.
- Remove the short feet. Pull off the short horizontal feet fitted to the console. Keep them together with the original circular cover.
- Release the circular cover. Lift the cover slightly to disengage its clips, then remove it. Do not force a clip or use a metal tool against the plastic.
- Align the drive. Position the CFI-ZDD1 so its clips line up with the two marked holes on the console. Keep fingers away from the drive terminal and the console connector.
- Seat the drive. Press firmly and evenly until the drive clicks into place. If it does not seat, lift it away and check alignment instead of rocking or twisting it.
- Fit the supplied parts. Install the drive’s circular cover and the long horizontal feet supplied with the drive. The cover should sit flush and the feet should be fully engaged.
- Reconnect and start the console. Reattach the AC power cord, HDMI cable, and any other required cables, then turn on the PS5.
Do not operate the console with its cover removed. An exposed connector or an unsecured drive can be damaged by movement, dust, or static electricity. If a cover will not clip into place, shut the console down, unplug it, and inspect the alignment rather than applying more pressure.
Installation mistakes to avoid
- Do not work while the console is in Rest Mode or while its power indicator is lit.
- Do not move a hot console or pull on the drive after only one clip has engaged.
- Do not touch the gold-colored terminal or the mating connector, and do not place the drive terminal-side down on a hard surface.
- Do not discard either set of feet or either circular cover; the parts are different and are needed for reversing the installation.
- Do not use a screwdriver for the normal attachment. Tools are reserved for Sony’s separate stuck-disc procedure.
Register (pair) the drive over the internet
After installation, the PS5 must pair the physical drive with the console online. Sony states: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” This is what most owners mean by registering the drive. The setup instructions do not describe a separate registration website, serial-number form, or additional Sony account application.

- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection.
- Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter its password, or connect an Ethernet cable and select the wired connection.
- Complete the network test and wait for the drive-pairing prompt. Follow the on-screen instructions until setup reports that pairing is complete.
- When prompted, allow the console to contact Sony’s service. Do not switch off the PS5 or unplug the router while this first-time pairing is running.
A stable wired connection can help when wireless service repeatedly drops during setup. Pairing is normally a one-time setup action for that drive and console combination; the requirement is internet access at setup, not a permanent disc-by-disc activation step.

Update system software before retrying a failed pairing
If the pairing screen never appears or the drive is not listed, update the console through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Install the latest update offered, restart the PS5, restart the router, and test the connection again. A system-software update can resolve detection and pairing problems that occur immediately after installing the hardware.
Keep the console connected until the update and pairing both finish. If Wi-Fi fails at the same point more than once, temporarily use Ethernet where possible, confirm that the router is online, and run the PS5 network test again. An error during pairing does not prove that the drive is physically defective.
Verify that the drive works
Use a known-good supported disc for the first test. Insert it after the console has finished starting and pairing. For a vertical console, Sony’s manual says the labeled side of the disc faces left. Once recognized, a game disc begins installing its data and the game appears on the games home screen.
If the first disc is not recognized, eject it and test a second PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD. Testing a different format separates a damaged or incompatible disc from a drive-detection problem. Give the console time to read the disc before ejecting it repeatedly.
Supported formats
| Disc type | Support and notes |
|---|---|
| PS5-format game discs | Supported, including Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs. |
| Compatible PS4-format game discs | Supported when the game is supplied on a compatible Blu-ray disc. |
| Ultra HD Blu-ray | Supported for movie playback. |
| BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE | Listed in the CFI-ZDD1 manual; BD-RE operation is subject to the manual’s stated limitations. |
| DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW | Supported formats listed by Sony. |
| AVCHD | Listed as supported by the manual. |
| PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs | Not playable from disc on this PS5 setup. |
| Burned discs and audio CDs | Not supported according to Sony’s troubleshooting information. |
Compatibility concerns the disc format, not merely whether a disc fits physically. A PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc can be the correct size and still be unsupported. Likewise, an audio CD or a burned disc should not be used as the only test of a newly installed drive.

What to compare before buying
If you are choosing between a detachable drive, a console bundle, or a replacement unit, compare the same practical details rather than the marketing name:
- Console compatibility: confirm CFI-2000/slim, CFI-2100, or the applicable PS5 Pro group.
- Media support: check that you need PS5 and PS4 game discs, Blu-ray, DVD, or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. None of these options adds PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc playback.
- Installation parts: make sure the package includes the drive’s circular cover and long feet, and retain the console’s original cover and short feet.
- Internet requirement: first-time pairing requires an internet connection, even though playing a disc afterward is not described as a disc-by-disc online activation.
- Warranty and returns: check Sony’s warranty and the seller’s return policy before opening or installing the accessory.
- Total setup cost: include the drive itself and any replacement HDMI cable or stand you actually need. A cable or stand is an accessory, not a requirement of the drive installation.
Use the exact CFI-ZDD1 product listing and verify regional compatibility before paying. Prices, stock, warranty terms, and accessory bundles vary, so confirm them with the retailer and Sony at the time of purchase.
Troubleshoot a drive that is not detected
Work through these checks in order. Reinsert the disc after each step so you know whether that step changed the result.

- Turn the PS5 off with Power > Turn Off PS5, unplug it, and wait for it to cool.
- Check that the drive is aligned with both marked holes and clicked fully into place.
- Confirm that the circular cover and long feet are fitted flush. A cover that is lifted or uneven can indicate that the drive is not seated correctly.
- Reconnect the cables, start the console, and check whether the drive is now visible.
Do not touch the connector while the console is connected to power. If the drive still is not detected after reseating it, avoid repeatedly removing and reinstalling it; move to software and support checks.
2. Check for a system-software detection error
An error such as SU-101312-8, described by Sony as “Blu-ray Disc drive does not exist,” indicates a detection problem rather than a bad movie disc. Install the latest system software using Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, restart the PS5 and router, and retry the online pairing while connected to a stable network.
3. Rule out the disc itself
- Eject the disc and inspect it for cracks, heavy scratches, labels, or contamination.
- Clean it with a soft, clean cloth, wiping from the center straight toward the outer edge. Do not wipe in a circular motion and do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Insert a known-good PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD.
- Check that the disc is inserted with the correct labeled-side orientation for the console’s position.
4. Rebuild the database in Safe Mode
If the drive is installed and paired but discs still fail to appear, shut the PS5 down. Enter Safe Mode using Sony’s standard Safe Mode procedure and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. This option is intended to repair indexing problems without immediately deleting installed games and saves. Follow the on-screen warning and do not interrupt the process.

5. Escalate when the fault remains
If the console still does not detect the drive, pairing cannot complete after the software and network checks, or multiple supported discs fail, use PlayStation Repairs. Provide the console model number, the CFI-ZDD1 model, any displayed error code, and the steps already completed. This gives support enough information to distinguish installation, software, network, and hardware causes.
Stuck discs and safe removal
If a disc becomes stuck, follow Sony’s separate stuck-disc procedure for the exact PS5 model. The manual’s procedure uses a #1 Phillips screwdriver only as directed. Do not pry the disc out with a knife, card, or other object, and do not run the console with the cover removed.
To remove the drive normally, shut the console down, unplug every cable, wait for it to cool, and place it bottom-up on a soft cloth. Remove the long feet and circular cover, release the drive clips without touching the terminals, and refit the original short feet and original circular cover. Store the drive and its supplied parts together so the installation can be reversed without missing components.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which PS5 models work with the CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive?
Sony lists PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the CFI-2000 slim model group and CFI-2100, plus compatible PS5 Pro consoles. Check the complete model number and the current regional compatibility listing before buying; the original PS5 chassis is not a supported target.
Is internet required every time I play a disc?
No. Sony specifies an internet connection for pairing the drive and PS5 during setup. That registration is a first-time drive-to-console pairing step, not a separate online activation for every disc.
Do I need to register the drive on a Sony website?
The official setup flow describes on-console online pairing, not a separate website, serial-number form, or additional account application.

Why is my newly installed drive not detected?
Confirm that the drive is clipped into both marked holes, update PS5 system software, restart the PS5 and router, and retry pairing on a stable connection. Error SU-101312-8 means Sony identifies the Blu-ray drive as absent. If detection still fails, contact PlayStation Repairs.
What discs can the drive play?
It supports PS5 and compatible PS4 game discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and the other formats listed in Sony’s manual, including AVCHD. PS1, PS2, and PS3 discs, burned discs, and audio CDs are not supported.
Which way should I insert a disc?
With the console vertical, Sony’s manual says the labeled side faces left. If a disc is rejected, eject it and verify the orientation for the console’s actual position before testing another known-good disc.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I remove the drive later?
Yes. Shut down, unplug, and cool the console first, then remove the long feet and supplied cover and release the clips without touching the terminals. Refit the original short feet and circular cover, which Sony says are needed to restore the console’s original configuration.
What should I do if a disc is stuck?
Use Sony’s stuck-disc procedure for your exact PS5 model. It calls for a #1 Phillips screwdriver only as directed. Do not pry with a knife, card, or other object, and do not operate the console with its cover removed.
The Bottom Line
Check your exact PS5 model before buying Sony’s CFI-ZDD1, install it only with the console shut down, unplugged, and cool, then complete the required one-time online pairing. Test a supported game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD; if updated software, reseating, network checks, and Safe Mode do not resolve detection, use PlayStation Repairs.
