To add a website chat widget, configure it in your chat provider’s admin console, copy the provider-generated installation code, place that code on the pages where chat should appear, and then adjust branding, greetings, response-time messaging, identity, and placement. The exact snippet and menu names depend on the provider and on whether your account uses a current messaging product or a legacy chat widget.
What a website chat widget does
A chat widget is the launcher and conversation panel visitors use to contact your support team from a website. In the usual setup, a small button floats over the page. Selecting it opens a panel where a visitor can read a greeting, submit a question, provide requested details, and continue a conversation when an agent or automated workflow responds.
The widget is only the visitor-facing part of a larger service. The provider’s admin console controls its appearance and behavior, while the provider’s script connects the page to that service. Installing code before configuring the widget can produce a default, incomplete, or incorrectly branded experience.
There is no universal embed snippet. Every provider generates code for a particular account, product generation, and configuration. Never copy a script from another site or assume that a legacy widget’s code works with a current messaging product.

Plan the experience before installing code
Decide the following items first. These choices determine which pages receive the widget and what visitors will be asked to do.
| Decision | Options to settle | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Page coverage | Every page, selected support pages, or a dedicated contact page | Controls where the launcher loads and prevents chat from distracting visitors during checkout, sign-in, or other focused tasks. |
| Placement | Standard floating launcher or an embedded panel inside a page element | Floating mode is the simplest deployment; embedded mode gives a designer control over the panel’s location and dimensions. |
| Brand identity | Launcher and header color, title, logo, and visual style | Visitors should recognize the panel as part of your site and still be able to see the launcher against the page background. |
| Opening message | Greeting, information request, and expected response time | Clear prompts reduce incomplete conversations and set a realistic expectation for a reply. |
| Visitor identity | Anonymous conversations, authentication, or remembered history | Authentication and history can help returning customers but require a deliberate privacy and support policy. |
| Operating workflow | Live agents, automated responses, or a handoff between them | The greeting and wait-time message must match who actually handles incoming conversations. |
1. Create or select the widget in your provider account
Sign in to the chat provider’s administration service and create a website widget, or select the existing one assigned to your account. In Zendesk’s current messaging workflow, an administrator selects a Web Widget in Admin Center. Eligible accounts may already have a default widget.
Before changing settings, identify the product generation shown in your account. Zendesk documents separate paths for its current messaging widget, Web Widget (Classic), and Chat-only widget. A menu or setting described for one path may not exist in another.
Confirm the account and product path
- Check whether the account uses current messaging or Web Widget (Classic).
- Check whether the account is Chat-only or combines Chat with Support; the Chat Widget API overview is documented for Chat-only accounts.
- Use the administration and developer documentation that names the same product generation as your account.
- Do not paste API examples from a legacy article into a current messaging implementation without confirming compatibility.
2. Set the widget’s identity and appearance
Open the widget’s appearance or style settings and make the visual choices while watching the provider’s preview. Zendesk’s setup flow exposes a primary color for the launcher and header, a header title, and an optional logo.
| Setting | Implementation guidance |
|---|---|
| Primary color | Choose a color that belongs to the site’s visual system and remains legible against both the page and the widget header. Check contrast on light and dark portions of the design. |
| Header title | Use a short label that tells visitors what they are opening, such as the support team or store name. Keep it understandable when the panel is narrow. |
| Logo | Add a recognizable company or support mark if the provider supports one. Use an image that remains clear at the size rendered in the header. |
| Style | Match the provider’s available corner, spacing, or panel style controls to the site without hiding the close, back, or send controls. |
Make the launcher visually obvious without covering navigation, cookie controls, checkout buttons, or other essential controls. If the provider offers separate desktop and mobile behavior, inspect both rather than assuming a desktop position will work on a phone.
3. Configure greetings, questions, and response expectations
Conversation settings determine what a visitor sees before typing and what information the support team receives. Zendesk groups these controls into areas that include basics, style, responses, wait time, authentication, and installation.
Write the opening greeting
State who is available and what the visitor can ask about. If the service is staffed only during certain hours, explain that in the greeting or the provider’s availability message instead of implying that an agent will answer immediately.

Set response and wait-time messaging
Tell visitors what to expect after they send a message. The expected-response text should reflect the team’s real process: an immediate live handoff, a queue, or a later email reply. Do not promise a time your team cannot consistently meet.
Decide whether to use authentication and history
Authentication can associate a conversation with a signed-in customer, while remembered history can let a returning visitor continue an earlier conversation. Enable these options only when your privacy policy, account model, and support staff are ready to handle the associated data. Anonymous chat may be more appropriate for pre-sales questions or visitors who have not created an account.
4. Copy the provider-generated installation snippet
After the widget is configured, open its installation section and copy the code generated for that specific account. The snippet is not interchangeable with code from another provider, another account, or a different product generation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Zendesk’s current messaging widget, the documented standard installation places the snippet immediately before the closing </body> tag on each page where the widget should be available. This placement lets the page content load before the widget script is processed.
Install on multiple pages
If your site does not use a shared layout, add the same account-specific snippet to every intended page. A shared template, global footer, or site-wide code-injection feature is usually more maintainable than editing individual pages, but the exact control depends on your site builder. Do not place the snippet on pages where chat is intentionally disabled.
Use a site builder’s supported integration when available
WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, and other builders expose different code-injection areas and app integrations. The Zendesk documentation cited for this setup does not establish vendor-specific steps for those platforms. Use the provider’s supported integration or the builder’s documented global-code area, then confirm that the resulting page places the script in the location required by the chosen widget path.
5. Choose between a floating widget and embedded mode
Standard floating mode
In standard mode, the provider renders the launcher automatically, usually at a fixed corner of the viewport. This is the appropriate starting point when you want a conventional support bubble and do not need the panel to occupy a specific area in your page layout.
Recommended Free Tools
Embedded mode
Use embedded mode when the conversation must live inside a designed page region, such as a support portal or contact layout. Zendesk describes embedded mode as disabling automatic rendering and using its JavaScript embed API with a target element. The widget then takes the size and position assigned to that target container through CSS.

Embedded mode requires more implementation work: create a stable container, give it an intentional width and height, load the provider code, and invoke the supported embed method for the matching product generation. Avoid inventing a function name from a different API version. If the container has no usable dimensions, the panel may appear collapsed or not appear where expected.
6. Publish and inspect the live page
- Save the provider settings and publish or activate the widget if the service uses a separate publish action.
- Open the provider’s preview. Zendesk’s setup flow also describes a Test it now option during configuration.
- Load a real page in a private or signed-out browser window and check the launcher position, color, title, and logo.
- Open the panel and follow the complete conversation path: greeting, requested fields, message submission, wait-time text, and agent or automation handoff.
- Check every page template where the snippet was added, including pages with different headers, footers, or responsive layouts.
- Repeat the inspection at narrow mobile widths and with browser zoom increased. The launcher must remain reachable without covering important controls.
A preview confirms configuration inside the provider; only a page rendered from your own site confirms that the installation, page targeting, CSS, and content-security rules work together.
Customize behavior without breaking the installation
Change settings in the provider first
Appearance, greetings, response prompts, wait-time text, authentication, and history are normally controlled in the provider account. Prefer those supported settings over editing the generated script. Provider-side changes can then be applied consistently to every page using the widget.

Use APIs for supported advanced changes
When the built-in controls are insufficient, use the API documented for the exact widget generation. Zendesk publishes separate documentation for current messaging APIs and Classic Chat APIs. API-driven theme or behavior changes should target the supported container and lifecycle for that product; code written for a legacy widget should not be assumed to control a current messaging widget.
Keep installation and configuration separate
The installation snippet loads the service, while provider settings define the experience. Avoid editing the generated snippet to change a color or greeting unless the provider explicitly instructs you to do so. Manual edits can be overwritten when the widget is regenerated and can make future troubleshooting difficult.
Current messaging and legacy widget caveats
Product naming is a practical implementation issue, not just a documentation detail. Zendesk’s current messaging widget, Web Widget (Classic), and Chat-only widget follow different setup and API paths.
| Widget path | What to verify | Installation caution |
|---|---|---|
| Current messaging widget | Use the current Web Widget setup, settings, and messaging API documentation associated with the account. | The standard documented placement is before </body> on intended pages. |
| Web Widget (Classic) | Follow the Classic administration and API instructions rather than messaging instructions. | Classic documentation may describe different controls and script behavior. |
| Chat-only widget | Confirm that the account is Chat-only before using the Chat Widget API overview. | A Chat-only API example is not automatically valid for an account that combines Chat and Support. |
A legacy Chat article may say that its script can be placed in the document head while recommending the end of the body to reduce possible rendering blockage. That guidance belongs to the legacy path; it should not be merged with current messaging instructions. Select the product first, then follow that product’s installation page.
Privacy, accessibility, and performance checks
Minimize collected data
Review every field and prompt before launch. If a detail is not needed to answer, route, authenticate, or follow up on a request, remove it. Make the purpose of required information clear in the conversation flow and align retention and access with your organization’s privacy practices.

Make controls usable
- Use readable text and sufficient color contrast for the launcher, header, messages, and controls.
- Ensure keyboard users can open, navigate, send, and close the panel.
- Do not position the launcher over essential navigation, consent controls, or purchase actions.
- Check that the panel remains usable at mobile widths and increased browser zoom.
- Provide a clear close or minimize action so the widget does not trap a visitor in the conversation.
Watch page behavior
Inspect the page with the widget closed and open. Look for layout shifts, overlapping fixed elements, blocked buttons, console errors, and policy restrictions that prevent the provider script from loading. If your site uses a content-security policy, consent manager, or script-delay feature, ensure the chat provider is handled according to both the provider’s and your site’s rules.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No launcher appears | The snippet is missing, placed on a page outside the intended scope, blocked, or tied to the wrong account. | Confirm the exact generated snippet, page source, publication status, browser console, consent settings, and product generation. |
| Widget appears twice | The script was added both through a global integration and a page-level block. | Remove the duplicate installation and leave one supported loading path. |
| Old color or greeting remains | A cached page or a different widget configuration is being loaded. | Confirm which account and widget the snippet references, save the provider settings, and reload without the browser cache. |
| Panel opens in the wrong place | Fixed-site CSS, a conflicting widget, or an embedded container with unexpected dimensions. | Inspect stacking order and positioning rules. For embedded mode, check the target element’s width, height, and placement. |
| Conversation cannot be submitted | A required field, authentication flow, availability rule, or blocked script is preventing completion. | Run the full path in a signed-out window, review required fields and operating hours, and inspect browser errors. |
| API customization has no effect | The code targets a different product generation or invokes the API before the widget is ready. | Match the API documentation to the account and use the provider’s documented initialization and lifecycle sequence. |
Maintain the widget after launch
Assign an owner to review the widget whenever the site, support process, or provider account changes. A small maintenance checklist prevents stale promises and broken page integrations.
- Review the greeting and expected-response text when staffing hours or escalation rules change.
- Remove fields that support agents no longer use and add only those required by a new workflow.
- Recheck authentication and conversation-history behavior when account or privacy policies change.
- Inspect the launcher and panel after major theme, navigation, checkout, or consent-banner updates.
- Confirm that every active page template still contains one current snippet and that retired templates no longer load it.
- Revisit API customizations after a provider product migration; legacy code may not carry forward.
How to choose the right implementation
Use the simplest path that satisfies the support experience:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose a floating widget when visitors should be able to start chat from several pages and the provider’s standard launcher position is acceptable.
- Choose selected-page installation when chat is useful for support or product questions but unnecessary on focused pages such as checkout or sign-in.
- Choose embedded mode when the conversation must occupy a defined region in a support portal or custom contact page.
- Choose provider-side settings for branding, greetings, response messaging, identity, and history that the service already exposes.
- Choose an API customization only when the built-in controls cannot deliver the required placement or behavior and the API matches the account’s product generation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I use one universal chat-widget code example?
The script is generated for a provider account and a particular widget product. It can include account identifiers, product-specific loading behavior, and configuration references, so a generic snippet would not connect to your service.
Can I use the same widget on a staging site and the production site?
That depends on the provider’s account and domain controls. The safe approach is to confirm which domains the account permits and verify that the staging installation does not send test conversations to a live support queue.
What should I do if a site-builder app and a pasted snippet both install the widget?
Use one installation method. Two loading paths can create duplicate launchers, repeated network requests, or conflicting configuration. Remove the method you do not need and retest the page.
Does changing the color require editing every page?
When the color is controlled in the provider account, changing that setting normally updates pages that load the same widget configuration. Editing page templates is needed only when the installation itself or page-specific styling changes.

How can I tell whether an API example is for my widget?
Compare the product name and account type in the API documentation with the labels in your administration console. A current messaging widget, Web Widget (Classic), and Chat-only widget are documented as separate paths; matching only the word “chat” is not sufficient.
Why does the preview work while the live page does not?
The preview runs inside the provider’s configuration environment. A live page also depends on your site template, publication state, consent controls, content-security policy, caching, and browser layout. Inspect the page source and browser console to find which of those layers differs.
