The practical home configuration is a single-phase immersion system: place a compatible ASIC in an approved dielectric fluid, pump the warmed fluid through a dry cooler, radiator, or liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger, and return cooled fluid to the tank. Do not energize the miner until the tank is filled, the loop is purged, flow is confirmed, and every fitting has passed a leak check.

A successful installation is an integrated electrical, plumbing, thermal, network, and warranty project. Choose the miner and fluid first, size heat rejection for continuous operation, use the exact voltage and protection specified by the equipment manufacturer, and have regulated electrical work performed by a licensed professional.

What immersion cooling changes—and what it does not

In a single-phase system, the ASIC boards operate while submerged in a nonconductive dielectric liquid that remains liquid throughout normal operation. A pump moves hot fluid out of the tank, sends it through a dry cooler, radiator, or heat exchanger, and returns cooler fluid to the miner tank. The fluid carries heat away; it does not eliminate the need for a correctly sized pump, heat-rejection device, controls, electrical protection, or leak containment.

Why single-phase is the sensible first home build

Single-phase tanks can be open or closed and use ordinary circulation hardware selected for the fluid. Two-phase systems boil a low-boiling-point fluid inside a sealed vessel and condense the vapor in a separate heat-transfer section. They require pressure-rated vessels, specialized refrigerant-like fluids, controls, and service procedures, so they are not a suitable first project for most homes. A home guide from D-Central specifically recommends single-phase architecture for residential installations.

Immersion is not an automatic warranty upgrade

Fans disappear from the thermal path, but the miner still has power supplies, control electronics, connectors, seals, firmware, and a manufacturer warranty. An air-cooled model is not automatically approved for submersion. Record the exact ASIC model, board revision, PSU, firmware, rated power, dimensions, and manufacturer immersion instructions before buying a tank. The Open Compute Project immersion project publishes requirements, material-compatibility work, and warranty guidance that can help with engineering decisions; it does not certify every miner-and-fluid pairing.

Decide whether your site can support the load

Continuous heat is the design load

Nearly all electricity consumed by an ASIC eventually becomes heat. The tank, heat exchanger, dry cooler, pump, wiring, and room ventilation therefore need to support a continuous load rather than a short peak. Size for your chosen miner’s measured or specified input power, your outdoor design temperature, and fouling or airflow losses in the heat-rejection equipment. A cooler that works on a mild day can lose capacity during a hot afternoon.

Location checklist

  • Provide a level, load-bearing floor with a spill-containment tray or bund sized for the tank and accessible plumbing.
  • Leave working clearance around the tank, pump, valves, filter, drain, power-distribution equipment, and network gear.
  • Keep the dry cooler outdoors or in a properly ventilated service area. Exergy’s Fog C2 guide calls for shade and at least 0.6 m (2 ft) of unobstructed rear airflow clearance.
  • Protect the installation from freezing, flooding, direct rain, dust accumulation, and accidental contact with hot surfaces.
  • Plan a drain or transfer method for service fluid. Do not route dielectric liquid into household drains unless the fluid’s safety data and local rules explicitly allow it.

Choose the loop architecture and components

A complete loop is more than a tank and a miner. The following components must be selected as one system.

Component What it must do Selection checks
Immersion tank Holds the miner and dielectric fluid without leaking or deforming. Capacity for the ASIC, cables, expansion space, lid or cover, lifting access, drain, and compatible seals.
Pump Moves warm fluid to the heat-rejection device and returns cooled fluid. Flow and head at the fluid’s actual viscosity; wetted materials and seals approved by the fluid supplier; isolation valves and service access.
Heat exchanger, dry cooler, or radiator Rejects heat outdoors or transfers it to a separate useful-water loop. Continuous thermal capacity at your climate and flow; fan, coil, and control requirements; freeze protection where applicable.
Tubing, hose, fittings, and valves Connect the tank, pump, and heat-rejection equipment without leaks or excessive restriction. Temperature, pressure, chemical compatibility, bend radius, hose clamps or fittings, drain and isolation points.
Sensors and controls Detect unsafe temperature, low level, loss of flow, or leaks and control pumps or fans. Place sensors at tank and loop inlet/outlet; provide alarms or an interlock that prevents the miner from running without circulation.
Power distribution and network Deliver protected power and a reliable Ethernet connection for pool and management access. Correct voltage, ampacity, overcurrent and GFCI protection, visible disconnect, PDU rating, and a network path to the miner.

Flow and turnover

D-Central’s 2026 home guide gives 10–20 L/min (2.5–5 GPM) as a guide-specific single-miner flow range. Confirm the required flow against the selected tank, fluid viscosity, pump curve, and heat exchanger rather than treating that range as a universal specification. The same guide recommends circulating the tank volume at least two to three times per hour to avoid stagnant layers and thermal stratification.

Use a flow meter or a manufacturer-approved flow sensor where possible. A pump that moves fluid through an open hose may not deliver the required flow after the tank, fittings, filter, elevation, and heat exchanger are installed.

Select a dielectric fluid and verify every wetted material

Use a fluid with an explicit ASIC-immersion compatibility statement. Engineered Fluids describes BitCool BC-888 as "Single-phase, Liquid Immersion Cooling for ASIC-based currency mining" and says it supports open and closed tanks plus single-loop or dual-loop heat-exchanger systems. Its 2019 technical data sheet lists a 5–100 °C operating range and a flash point above 130 °C. Those are manufacturer specifications for the product, not permission to operate any installation across that entire range.

Fluid decision What to verify
Miner compatibility Board coatings, connectors, plastics, cable jackets, fan simulators, PSU arrangement, and the manufacturer’s warranty position.
Loop compatibility Pump body, impeller, seals, gaskets, hose, tank coating, filter media, heat-exchanger plates, and adhesives.
Operating limits Temperature range, viscosity, flash point, storage requirements, filtration instructions, and replacement interval from the current technical data sheet and safety data sheet.
Fluid handling Spill response, personal protective equipment, labeling, disposal, and whether the fluid may contact domestic-water equipment. Never add water or mix products unless the fluid supplier explicitly approves it.

Ask the fluid supplier for a compatibility chart and compare it with the exact components in your build. A dielectric fluid can prevent electrical conduction while still attacking a seal, softening a cable jacket, dissolving an adhesive, or carrying debris into a pump.

Prepare electrical service, protection, and networking

There is no universal home-miner circuit. Voltage, current, disconnects, conductor sizing, grounding, GFCI requirements, and local code depend on the miner, tank, pump, heater, dry cooler, and jurisdiction. Use the system manual and a licensed electrician rather than copying a circuit from another installation.

Published example Documented requirement or input Qualification
Hashrate House immersion heater Dedicated 30 A, 240 V hardwired circuit. Requirement stated for that heater on the vendor’s current immersion-systems page; not a universal requirement.
Complete HashTub system 60 A, 240 V GFCI spa circuit and a visible disconnect. Requirement stated for that complete system; verify the exact model and local electrical code.
Fog Hashing C2 equipment 200–240 V, 50/60 Hz inputs; the guide recommends a PDU. Equipment input range from Exergy’s setup guide, not a substitute for circuit design.

Keep pump and control power arranged so the miner cannot start when circulation is stopped. Label breakers and disconnects, protect cables from hot fluid and sharp tank edges, and provide a readily accessible emergency shutoff. Connect the ASIC by Ethernet, assign or reserve its address, confirm that it can reach the mining pool, and retain local management access before closing the tank.

Build the system: a commissioning sequence that prevents expensive mistakes

1. Freeze the equipment list

Write down the ASIC model, PSU model, power draw, firmware, physical dimensions, cable exits, fan-header requirements, fluid volume, pump model, heat-rejection capacity, and all electrical inputs. Resolve warranty questions in writing before modifying fans, removing covers, or submerging boards.

2. Position and inspect the tank

Set the tank level and secure it against tipping. Install the drain, isolation valves, temperature sensors, level sensor, leak detector, and cable glands. Leave enough fluid expansion space for the warm operating level. Inspect welds, gaskets, hose barbs, threaded fittings, and plugs before adding any liquid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Assemble the external loop

Connect tank OUT to the pump and then to the dry cooler or heat exchanger; return the cooled outlet to tank IN. Follow the equipment manual’s port labels. Exergy’s Fog C2 layout illustrates tank OUT to dry-cooler IN and dry-cooler OUT to tank IN. Add isolation valves so the pump, filter, and cooler can be serviced without draining the entire tank. Support hoses so their weight does not load tank fittings.

4. Prepare the miner exactly as specified

Follow the tank manufacturer’s procedure for board orientation, lift handles, cable pass-throughs, PSU placement, and fan simulators. Exergy’s C2 procedure uses lift handles, fan simulators connected to the miner’s fan headers, and sealed cable pass-throughs. Do not improvise a fan-simulator connection or leave power connectors exposed to fluid when the manual requires a sealed arrangement.

5. Install power and network connections

With breakers off, connect the approved PDU, miner PSU, pump, sensors, controls, and dry-cooler equipment. Confirm grounding and polarity with the electrician. Connect Ethernet, record the miner’s management address, and verify pool credentials without starting hashing.

6. Fill with approved fluid and purge air

  1. Confirm that every wetted component is approved for the chosen fluid and that drains are closed.
  2. Fill slowly through the designated fill port while watching the tank level and all fittings.
  3. Start the circulation pump with the miner de-energized. Open valves in the sequence specified by the manual and allow trapped air to leave the tank and heat-rejection loop.
  4. Top up to the operating level, then inspect the tank, pump, hoses, heat exchanger, cooler, and cable glands for seepage.
  5. Verify flow, inlet and outlet temperatures, level, leak detection, pump noise, and sensor readings.

Hashrate House’s installation instruction is unambiguous: "Fill with the supplied fluid and purge before the miner breaker is ever switched on." Treat that as a commissioning rule for any comparable system.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

7. Energize and test at stock settings

Only after fill, purge, leak inspection, and sensor checks should you close the miner breaker. Start the ASIC at its stock configuration and observe several hours of operation. Check tank temperature, fluid inlet temperature, outlet temperature, flow, pump current or alarms, miner board temperatures, rejected shares, and pool connectivity. Record a baseline before changing firmware, frequency, or voltage.

8. Establish shutdown behavior

Test what happens when the pump stops, a level switch opens, a leak detector trips, the dry-cooler fan fails, or network access is lost. The preferred response is an alarm and an automatic miner shutdown or power interruption, while the pump continues long enough to remove residual heat if the equipment supports that sequence.

How to reject heat—or use it in the house

Outdoor rejection with a dry cooler or radiator

A dry cooler is the simplest arrangement when you do not need useful heat indoors. It keeps the dielectric loop closed, avoids contact between mining fluid and household water, and rejects heat through a finned coil and fan. Keep the coil clean, shaded where the manufacturer recommends, and clear of vegetation and recirculated hot air. Account for winter freeze protection and condensate or drainage according to the cooler manual.

Separated heat reuse

Yes, an immersion miner can contribute heat to a home, but the mining loop and domestic-water loop must remain physically separated by a properly rated heat exchanger. Documented applications include domestic hot water, radiant floors, a furnace coil, a buffer tank, and a hot tub. Hashrate House describes these configurations and supplies a model-specific heat exchanger on its HashTub systems page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design heat reuse around the building’s demand and controls. A miner produces heat continuously while a home may need none in summer; install a bypass or secondary heat-rejection path so the ASIC remains within limits when the house cannot accept more heat. Never circulate dielectric fluid through potable-water plumbing, a radiant loop, or a hot tub directly.

Turnkey systems and what their published specifications mean

Packaged systems can reduce fabrication work, but their capacities and marketing claims still need to be checked against your miner, climate, electrical service, warranty, and installation cost.

System Published configuration Points to verify before purchase
BitCap A-600-S19 BitCap describes a six-S19-miner tank with a 26 kW dry cooler and pump, 35 gallons of fluid, 9.5 dB noise at 3 ft, and up to 40% overclock capability. These are vendor-published specifications. Confirm the exact S19 variants, electrical service, warranty, shipping, dry-cooler performance in your climate, and whether the overclock statement applies to your firmware and operating conditions. Product page: https://www.bitcap.co/liquid-immersion/a600
Fog Hashing C2 Exergy’s guide lists capacity for two S19/S21-class rigs, a tank, dry cooler, tubing, filling pump, fan simulators, and approximately 60 L of approved single-phase fluid. Confirm miner dimensions, PSU arrangement, fluid availability, 200–240 V service, PDU rating, outdoor clearance, and support terms. Setup guide: https://support.exergyheat.com/t/fog-hashing-c2-setup-guide/39
Hashrate House HashTub A pre-installed miner and heat exchanger integrated with a hot tub or home-heating loop; the vendor documents domestic hot water, radiant-floor, furnace-coil, and buffer-tank uses and lists 13 gallons (50 L) of supplied fluid. Electrical requirements are model-specific. Confirm the 30 A heater circuit or 60 A GFCI spa circuit where applicable, heat-reuse controls, service access, and warranty boundaries. System page: https://www.hashratehouse.com/immersion-systems

Operating and maintenance routine

Daily or remote checks

  • Tank level and visible leaks.
  • Fluid inlet and outlet temperatures, tank temperature, and flow.
  • Pump noise, vibration, fan operation, and control alarms.
  • ASIC board temperature, hash rate, rejected shares, hardware errors, and pool connection.
  • Room temperature and any heat-reuse storage temperature.

Periodic service

  • Remove dust, leaves, and obstructions from the dry cooler; inspect the recommended airflow clearance.
  • Inspect tubing, clamps, cable glands, seals, tank seams, and valve stems for swelling, cracking, or seepage.
  • Follow the fluid supplier’s filtration, sampling, and replacement guidance. Do not mix different fluids during a top-up.
  • Clean or replace filters at the specified interval and investigate debris rather than repeatedly filtering it out.
  • Retest low-flow, high-temperature, leak, and emergency-shutdown alarms after service.

Overclocking is a separate engineering decision

Immersion can provide more thermal headroom, but it does not guarantee higher profit, longer life, or safe overclocking. Any frequency or voltage change raises electrical and heat-rejection requirements and can invalidate warranty terms. BitCap’s advertised "up to 40% overclock capability" is a vendor claim, not independent performance evidence. Change one parameter at a time, monitor temperatures and hardware errors, and keep a known-good stock profile for recovery.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely causes Safe next action
Miner overheats soon after startup Pump not running, trapped air, blocked filter, reversed ports, insufficient flow, undersized cooler, or a failed sensor. Stop hashing, leave the pump running only if the system permits it, verify flow and port direction, purge air, inspect the filter, and compare temperatures with the manual’s limits.
Fluid level falls Loose fitting, damaged seal, hose movement, evaporation from an open tank, or fluid retained in serviced equipment. De-energize the miner, contain the spill, locate the leak, repair with compatible parts, and refill only with the approved fluid.
Pump is noisy or flow is intermittent Air in the pump, cavitation from low level, blocked intake, incompatible viscosity, or a failing bearing. Check level and suction-side restrictions, purge air, clean the approved filter, and confirm the pump curve at operating temperature.
Miner will not boot or reports fan failure Fan simulators missing or miswired, PSU or control cable routed incorrectly, network issue, or a firmware compatibility problem. Power down safely, verify the manufacturer’s fan-header and cable procedure, restore the stock configuration, and use local management logs.
Tank is hot at the top and cool at the bottom Insufficient turnover, poor inlet placement, low pump flow, or thermal stratification. Measure actual flow, inspect for restrictions, and rework the return path or circulation rate within the system design limits.
Dry cooler cannot hold target temperature High outdoor ambient, blocked coil, inadequate airflow clearance, undersized cooler, or heat-reuse loop unable to accept heat. Clean and shade the cooler as specified, confirm fan operation and clearance, switch to the backup heat-rejection path, and reduce or stop hashing if limits are exceeded.
