YouTube Studio schedules a live event, but it does not schedule which prerecorded videos play during it. To automate a continuous playlist-style live feed, schedule the event in YouTube Studio and use an encoder or cloud playout service that can send and sequence prerecorded media. If you only need a regular video to become public at a set time, schedule its upload instead; that is not a live broadcast.
Choose the kind of schedule you need
There are three separate controls that are easy to mistake for one another:
- Broadcast schedule: when a live event is due to start on YouTube.
- Video publishing schedule: when an uploaded video changes from private or scheduled to public.
- Media playout schedule: which source or prerecorded item the encoder sends, and when it moves to the next item.
A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos; it does not itself transmit them as a live feed. YouTube models the event as a liveBroadcast and its incoming feed as a liveStream; the broadcast must be bound to a stream. For several scheduled live shows
Use YouTube Studio to create upcoming events, then start an encoder with the appropriate live program at each event time. If the shows use the same encoder setup and transmission settings, you can reuse a stream for broadcasts at different times.

For a continuous prerecorded channel
Use an encoder or service with explicit continuous or scheduled prerecorded-media playout. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams, Upstream for browser-based 24/7 streaming, and AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. These are options to evaluate, not independent endorsements; confirm current compatibility, rights, operating limits, and terms with the vendor.
For a regular video release
Upload the video and schedule its publishing in YouTube Studio if viewers do not need a live broadcast. YouTube says the scheduled upload is private until its selected publishing time, when it becomes public. Schedule video publishing

Set up a scheduled event and encoder
- Confirm the channel can go live. Enable live streaming and resolve any channel restrictions before the event. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the event day. Get started with live streaming
- Create the event. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, open Manage, then choose Schedule stream. Create a stream or reuse settings from an earlier one, and set the title, scheduled start time, privacy, and other event details. A scheduled event can appear as upcoming, be shared, and let viewers request notifications. Schedule a live stream
- Connect an encoder. If the encoder offers YouTube as a destination, select it and follow its connection flow. Otherwise, copy the YouTube stream URL into the encoder’s server or RTMP field and paste the stream key into its key field. Treat the key like a password; if it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. Connect your encoder
- Prepare the program. For a creator-led event, configure the live sources and start the encoder at the scheduled time. For prerecorded playlist-style output, load the media and its order in a service or encoder that supports that playout; a YouTube playlist alone will not do this.
- Start and check the event. Start sending the feed, confirm that its preview appears in Live Control Room, and select Go live unless auto-start is enabled for that broadcast. Monitor the public watch page and end the event when appropriate.
- Check the archive and visibility. YouTube Help says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the channel’s Live tab for current, upcoming, and previous broadcasts, and confirm that the watch page has the intended visibility. Manage live streams
Automate recurring events with the API
The YouTube Live Streaming API is suited to developers building a schedule manager or creating many broadcasts. It requires application registration and authorization for the channel. At a high level, create a liveBroadcast with its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status; create or reuse a liveStream with transmission settings such as ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate; bind the broadcast to the stream; and transition the broadcast to testing or live when appropriate. Broadcasts at different times can share a stream when the encoder configuration is the same. Use separate stream resources where concurrent broadcasts cannot share transmission settings; separate channels need separate streams. The API manages YouTube’s broadcast and feed resources, not the contents or order of a prerecorded playlist.

What auto-start and auto-stop do—and do not do
These controls affect the event’s lifecycle, not media scheduling. Auto-start can start a broadcast when video begins arriving on its bound stream. Auto-stop can end the broadcast roughly one minute after the channel owner stops sending video. Neither control selects a video, advances a playlist, or guarantees that the next item will play. Rights, monetization, and reliability checks
- Use media you have rights to stream. This is especially important for continuous music and prerecorded programming. A playlist or a scheduled event does not grant permission to use its contents. Review YouTube’s playlist guidance and the rights terms for the content you use.
- Do not assume scheduling enables ads. YouTube says a channel must be eligible to monetize videos to enable automated ads on a broadcast. Scheduling alone does not promise ad revenue. Manage automatic mid-roll ads in live streams
- Plan for the whole transmission path. Studio’s event schedule does not keep an encoder running or recover a failed source. Compare monitoring, restart behavior, connectivity, and recovery in the encoder or service you choose.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The stream is not available when I try to schedule it
Check whether live streaming has been enabled on the channel and whether any channel restrictions apply. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.

The event page and incoming feed are separate. Confirm that the encoder is running, has the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and is sending video to the stream bound to this broadcast. Check the encoder’s own connection status before attempting to go live.

The event starts, but the playlist does not advance
Check the encoder or playout service’s media queue and schedule. YouTube’s playlist and event schedule do not control prerecorded-media sequencing.
The broadcast does not end when the media stops
Confirm the encoder has actually stopped sending video and check the broadcast’s auto-stop setting. Auto-stop may close the broadcast roughly one minute after the feed ends; it is not a playlist stop-time control.
The wrong event receives the feed
Check which stream resource is bound to each broadcast and which key the encoder is using. For concurrent broadcasts with different transmission settings, configure distinct streams rather than assuming one feed can serve both.
