Set up an AI-powered toy yourself before giving it to a child: check what it senses and sends, secure the account and Wi-Fi, complete caregiver-led onboarding, and locate the mute, privacy, and deletion controls. There is no universal setup sequence; features and data practices differ by model, so use the current manual, privacy notice, companion app, and settings for the exact toy.
1. Check what the exact toy does before powering it on
Find the toy’s manual, privacy notice, app listing, support page, age recommendation, and any safety or recall notices. Establish whether it has a microphone, camera, location capability, motion sensors, an internet connection, an account requirement, or voice and chat features. A connected toy is also a data-processing device: identify who receives information from it and who can access that information. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) describes connected toys as physical products supported by internet functionality that may process personal data (ICO guidance on connected toys).
Before creating a child profile, look for clear answers to these questions in the manufacturer’s privacy notice and setup instructions:
- When is the microphone or camera active, and does the toy listen passively or only after a deliberate action?
- Does it store recordings, transcripts, images, or other information, and for how long?
- Who can review that information, including service providers or third-party app components?
- Is information used to personalize the service or train systems?
- Can a parent inspect, download, or delete the child’s information, and how?
- Which functions stop working if you deny an app permission, turn off connectivity, or delete an account?
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises caregivers to ask what a toy records, how its data is stored, shared, and deleted, and whether parents can manage it. It also recommends checking security and recall information (FTC checklist for connected toys). The ICO says privacy information should be available before purchase and setup; its connected-toys guidance notes it is under review following the UK Data (Use and Access) Act, so consult the current guidance for legal interpretation.

2. Secure the adult account, network, and app
- Create and control the caregiver account yourself. Use a unique password and enable additional account security if offered.
- Use password-protected home Wi-Fi. Do not share the network password with the child.
- Install the companion app only from the official app store or manufacturer source. Review its permissions before granting them, and allow only those needed for the features you intend to use.
- Decline optional location, contacts, camera, microphone, or communications access unless there is a clear reason to enable it.
The ICO calls for appropriate security, including encryption in transit, and identifies risks such as unauthorized access, microphone takeover, and location tracking. The maker may not be the only party handling data: the FTC’s 2025 Apitor action concerned allegations that a third-party software development kit in a robot-toy app enabled collection of children’s precise location without required parental notice and consent. That case is a reason to examine app permissions and data recipients, not evidence that every connected toy collects location (FTC announcement on Apitor).
3. Complete onboarding as the caregiver
Read each permission and consent screen rather than accepting every prompt by default. Use the adult’s details for the caregiver account, provide only child-profile information the service needs, and decline optional sharing or communications features unless you intend to use them. A consent checkbox does not answer every privacy question: check the policy, the available controls, and the deletion process as well.
In the United States, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) can apply when an online service directed to children under 13 collects their personal information. The FTC’s Apitor announcement emphasizes that covered collection by a third party can still trigger parental-notice and consent obligations. For your specific situation, consult current FTC guidance rather than treating an onboarding checkbox as a complete legal assessment.

Miko 3 setup example—not a universal sequence
Miko’s guide gives a model-specific example. It says to charge Miko 3 for at least 30–60 minutes before setup using the included USB-C cable; for best results, it recommends a 15 W (5 V, 3 A) or higher power adapter. The guide says the robot can remain connected to power during setup. Follow the current Miko 3 setup guide, since app screens and steps may change.
- Connect the robot to password-protected Wi-Fi.
- Install the Miko App and register the guardian’s details.
- Add the child profile and complete verified parental consent.
- Pair the robot using the six-digit code.
- Set the four-digit parent passcode.
- Install the software update if prompted.
4. Find and test the privacy and stop controls
Before handing over the toy, locate the settings for microphone or listening, camera, AI conversations, location, calling or messaging, chat history, retention, and deletion. Check whether the toy has a physical mute switch or a simple way to pause its connection, then test the control so you know what changes when it is used.
Make sure you can tell when listening or data collection is active. The ICO recommends clear indicators, a clear signal when listening mode is on, avoiding collection in passive listening mode, and an easy way to turn connectivity off (ICO connected-toys guidance). Show the child what the listening or recording indicator looks like and agree on when to switch the toy off, such as at bedtime or during private family conversations.

If the toy supports multiple child profiles or age settings, verify that the profile for the child who will use it is active and that its defaults suit that child. The ICO’s children’s guidance recommends accounting for users of different ages and making the default service suitable for children (ICO guidance on children’s information).
5. Set boundaries for AI conversations and supervise early use
Explain in age-appropriate language that the toy is software, not a person. Tell the child to involve a trusted adult if it says something confusing or upsetting, or asks for private information. Supervise initial use, especially if the toy supports open-ended conversation, a camera, messaging, or video. Review any topic filters and time controls, and pause use if a response concerns you. Moderation claims are not proof that generated responses will always be suitable; the reviewed sources do not establish a universal independent safety certification for AI toys.

6. Recheck privacy and security after updates
After a firmware or app update, revisit permissions, privacy settings, and listening or connectivity controls. Periodically check account access, data review and deletion options, and whether the manufacturer has changed its policy or features. The ICO recommends regularly checking that security measures remain in place and work as intended.
What Miko’s published claims do—and do not—establish
Miko describes Miko 3 as an AI robot for children aged 5–10 with parent-app controls and age-appropriate moderated conversations. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent verification that every interaction is safe (Miko 3 product page).
Miko’s privacy policy, last updated 30 March 2026, says it applies to Miko 3 and Miko Mini. The policy describes collecting and recognizing children’s face and voice data, demographic information, and preferences; says Miko obtains verifiable parental consent before collecting information from or about children under 13; and says parents can delete a child’s information through the mobile app. It also says biometric data may be stored for up to three years after last use. These are statements in Miko’s policy; read its latest version and check the app’s current settings before deciding whether to use the toy (Miko privacy policy).

What current regulatory developments mean for families
The FTC’s 2025 Apitor announcement described allegations about one robot-toy app and proposed settlement terms that would require parental notice and verifiable consent for covered collection, deletion upon a parent’s request, and retention only as reasonably necessary. It is an enforcement action involving specific allegations and terms, not a general finding about all connected toys.
In the UK, the Department for Business and Trade and the Office for Product Safety and Standards announced a call for evidence on toy safety, including AI-enabled toys, on 6 July 2026. The announcement said it would remain open until 6 October 2026. Because that closing date has not yet passed as of 4 October 2026, the call is still open; it is a policy evidence-gathering step, not a new rule by itself (UK government announcement).
