Start by deciding what recurring task needs continuity, share only the stable preferences or project details needed for that task, and configure memory, chat history, model improvement, temporary chats, and connected apps as separate controls. Their effects differ by provider and account.
Decide what the assistant needs to remember
Begin with the job, not a list of personal facts. Continuity is most useful for recurring tasks: for example, remembering that you prefer concise explanations, that a project uses a particular programming language, or that drafts should follow a specified format. Such stable preferences and project context are usually more useful than a detailed personal history.
Share the least detail that lets the assistant do the job. Avoid adding sensitive information unless it is genuinely necessary, and consider whether a general instruction can replace an identifying detail. OpenAI cautions that sensitive information can enter ChatGPT memory when it is shared in conversation; do not assume the assistant will exclude it automatically. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guide
Know which data control does what
“Memory” is not a universal feature with one standard effect. A service may store facts you explicitly ask it to remember, draw on prior chats, follow custom instructions, or use information supplied through connected apps. These are distinct from chat history, model-improvement settings, temporary-chat modes, and an organization’s retention rules.

- Saved memory: Information retained for personalization. In ChatGPT, saved memories are stored separately from chat history.
- Prior-chat reference: The assistant may use information from earlier conversations. ChatGPT’s use of chat-history reference can evolve over time.
- Custom instructions: Direct guidance you provide, such as preferred tone or formatting. This is not the same thing as facts developed across conversations.
- Model improvement: A separate choice about whether conversations may be used to improve models. Turning it off does not, by itself, turn off memory or erase history.
- Temporary or incognito chat: A mode intended for conversations you do not want handled like ordinary chats. The precise treatment of existing personalization and retained data varies by service.
- Connected apps and workspace retention: Email, files, other connected sources, or organization policies may affect what information is available or retained.
For ChatGPT, the documented memory controls are under Settings > Personalization > Memory. The names and availability of controls can vary by experience. Set up personalization with the smallest useful scope
- Write down the recurring task. State what continuity should improve, such as drafting in your preferred format or keeping track of a project’s non-sensitive constraints.
- Choose the minimum information for that task. Prefer a concise preference or project note over biographical detail. Leave out sensitive facts that do not materially improve the result.
- Enable only the personalization features you intend to use. In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Memory and review the controls shown for your account. Do not assume that enabling one feature enables—or disables—every other data-use setting.
- Review model-improvement settings separately. In ChatGPT, check the separate Data controls area. Anthropic also documents a separate consumer model-improvement choice for Claude. - Test the setup with a low-risk prompt. Ask for a routine task where the preference should help, then check whether the response reflects the intended context without requiring extra personal details.
Use temporary chats for one-off conversations
For a question that should not become part of ongoing personalization, use the provider’s temporary or incognito mode if available. Check the mode’s behavior before relying on it: a temporary chat may still use existing instructions or memories, and it is not a universal promise of zero retention.

ChatGPT
OpenAI says temporary chats do not create or update memories. Before starting, ChatGPT lets users choose whether the temporary conversation can use existing personalization; select the unpersonalized option if you do not want existing memory or custom instructions used. Claude
Anthropic says Claude Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. This describes model-improvement use; it should not be read as a general guarantee that no data is retained for any purpose. Anthropic’s data-retention guidance

Review and remove remembered information completely
Periodically inspect the memory controls and remove information that is no longer useful. In ChatGPT, a memory summary may help you review personalization, but it is not a complete inventory: OpenAI describes it as a high-level view that may not include every detail or source memory can reference. Deleting one copy may not remove another. In ChatGPT, a saved memory and the chat where it was mentioned are separate data objects: deleting the chat does not necessarily delete the saved memory, and deleting the memory does not erase the mention in the chat. OpenAI says complete removal may require deleting the memory and the relevant source material, including chats, files, or connected-app sources. Check retention rules for your provider and account
Deletion and retention timelines are provider-specific statements, not universal standards. Account type, region, plan, and workspace configuration can affect available controls and what happens to data.

These are the vendors’ own documented practices, not an independent audit. For a work or school account, ask the administrator which controls and retention rules apply before treating a temporary mode or deletion action as private from the organization.

Use a short privacy check before each new feature
- What exact recurring task will this information improve?
- Could a less specific preference or project note work just as well?
- Does the control affect saved memory, prior-chat reference, history, model improvement, or only the current conversation?
- Can you inspect and edit retained information, and do you know where its source copies may remain?
- Are connected apps, an administrator, or organization retention rules involved?
Revisit these choices when a provider changes its controls or when your account changes from consumer to workplace use. Because the settings are separate, reducing exposure is an ongoing habit: share less, enable only the features you need, and check where the information may still exist.
