To add an alert box to a YouTube live stream, configure an alert widget with a provider, add it to your streaming software as an Alert Box source or Browser Source, and test it in the scene before going live. The box appears in your video; it is separate from YouTube’s notifications to viewers.
What a YouTube live alert box does
An alert box is an on-screen overlay supplied by an alert provider. It can display events such as a new subscriber, member, or contribution, depending on the provider and the event settings available for YouTube. You customize the widget in the provider’s dashboard, then render it in the scene you broadcast.
Streamlabs documents a native Alert Box source for Streamlabs Desktop and a widget-URL approach for OBS. OBS describes third-party overlays embedded in a stream with a Browser Source. The exact controls differ in other streaming programs.
Set up the alert widget
- Choose a provider and connect YouTube. In the provider dashboard, use its platform or account-linking controls to connect the channel. Streamlabs’ guide covers channel linking and alert settings; labels may change as its interface is updated.
- Choose the events to show. Enable the YouTube event categories you want, such as subscriber or member alerts, where supported. Do not assume the event list or settings are identical across platforms.
- Customize the alert and save. Adjust supported options such as image or animation, sound, text, duration, and variations. Save the changes in the provider dashboard.
- Add the widget to your streaming scene. Follow the applicable software instructions below, then position and size the source so it does not cover faces, gameplay, captions, or other important information.
- Test it before going live. Trigger a test alert from the provider and inspect how it looks and sounds in the target scene. A test confirms that the widget renders in your setup; it does not prove YouTube will expose or promptly deliver every real subscriber event.
Add alerts in Streamlabs Desktop
If you use Streamlabs Desktop, add its Alert Box from the Sources panel and place it in the scene that will be live. Configure the event types and appearance in Streamlabs’ alert settings, save, and use the test function to check the result in that scene.

Add alerts in OBS Studio
For OBS without the Streamlabs plugin, use the provider’s widget URL as a Browser Source. OBS confirms that third-party alert overlays can be embedded this way. Streamlabs also documents an OBS plugin route; installing the plugin is not required for the Browser Source method.
- In your alert provider’s dashboard, open the alert widget and copy its Widget URL.
- In OBS, select the scene where alerts should appear. In Sources, add a Browser source and enter the copied URL in its URL field. OBS’s interface may vary by version.
- Set the source dimensions and place it where alerts will be visible without obscuring important content. Use the provider’s recommended dimensions if shown.
- Return to the provider’s dashboard, save any changes, and trigger a test alert. Check both the picture and sound in the scene you will stream.
If you use another streaming program, look for its browser or web source and follow the alert provider’s instructions; source names and settings are not established as identical across software.

Why an alert may not appear
- The widget is missing from the live scene: Confirm that the correct source is in the scene currently selected for streaming, and that it is visible and not hidden behind another source.
- The source is blank or shows the wrong widget: Check that you copied the correct provider Widget URL and entered it in the source. Confirm that the provider settings were saved.
- A test does not appear: Confirm that you triggered the provider’s test function, that the relevant event type is enabled, and that you are checking the intended scene. Test again after saving changes.
- A real subscriber is not shown: YouTube subscriptions are private by default. Accounts with private subscriptions do not appear in a channel’s Subscribers List, while public subscriptions can be visible. Therefore, a widget cannot be assumed to display every subscriber.
- A subscriber alert arrives late: Streamlabs’ older troubleshooting guidance says YouTube subscriber alerts can be delayed by up to four hours. Treat that as Streamlabs’ stated caveat, not a guaranteed delay for every provider or account; check the provider’s current guidance.
If a test renders but a real event does not, distinguish a widget or scene problem from whether YouTube exposed the event to the provider. The available setup documentation does not establish identical event delivery across all providers and account configurations.
Alert overlays are not YouTube viewer notifications
An alert box is part of the creator’s video scene. YouTube’s own live notifications are separate messages sent to viewers. For encoder-based streams, YouTube says it sends notifications to eligible subscribers after the stream is public and YouTube detects that it is live. Viewer eligibility and receipt also depend on account and device notification settings.
