Apple lists this sleep-pause feature for AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3. It is separate from noise cancellation, and no setting guarantees that a partner will not hear sound.
Set AirPods to pause audio when you fall asleep
- Connect your AirPods to the iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV you plan to use for listening.
- Open the connected AirPods settings. On a supported model, turn on the option to automatically pause audio when you fall asleep. Apple lists AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3 for this feature. The menu wording and location may vary by device and software version. Apple’s AirPods support guide has current instructions.
- Choose calm audio and start quietly. Lower volume and a limited listening duration can reduce exposure and the chance of disturbing someone nearby. There is no universally safe overnight volume established by the cited guidance, so do not treat a particular volume percentage as a safety threshold.
- Check the result before bed. Confirm audio pauses as expected on your device, and ask your partner whether the sound is still audible. Automatic pausing does not ensure that sound will stop at a particular time or that it will be inaudible before then.
Understand the difference between sleep pausing and noise cancellation
Automatic sleep pausing stops playback when you fall asleep on supported models; noise cancellation changes how you hear surrounding sound. One-ear noise cancellation is available on supported AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 ANC models. To enable it, go to Settings > Accessibility > AirPods > [your connected AirPods] > Noise Cancellation with One AirPod. This is a listening-mode option, not a sleep timer. See Apple’s AirPods settings guidance for model and software details.
Apple also describes calming background sounds, such as rain or ocean, on supported AirPods used with iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Availability depends on the device and AirPods model; it is not the same feature as automatic sleep pausing.
Keep listening comfortable and limit exposure
High-volume listening over long periods can damage hearing. Apple’s headphone notifications use over 80 decibels for 40 total hours within the previous seven days as an example exposure context; that figure is not a bedtime-safe threshold or a recommendation for overnight listening. Apple also provides a Reduce Loud Audio setting. See Apple’s headphone safety information.

- 50+ SLEEP SOUNDS, OR STREAM YOUR OWN. White noise, nature, and calm tones for sleep or meditation, plus music and podcasts over Bluetooth. A sleep timer fades audio as you drift off, then switches to masking.
- PURPOSE-BUILT FOR SLEEP, NOT ADAPTED FROM DAYTIME EARBUDS. The Smart Case measures bedroom noise, light, and temperature overnight, and the Ozlo app (iOS + Android) turns it into sleep insights that sharpen with use.
Cleveland Clinic audiologist Valerie Pavlovich Ruff, AuD, notes that whether earbuds are suitable for relaxation depends on how they are used. Consumer health guidance identifies possible earwax buildup, trapped moisture and infection risk, as well as pressure or irritation. Clean earbuds regularly, keep the volume low, and avoid wearing them if they cause pain or irritation. If you need to hear alarms, a child, or other sounds around you, consider whether earbuds that reduce awareness of your surroundings are appropriate. Cleveland Clinic’s guidance on sleeping with earbuds discusses these trade-offs.
What to do if you sleep on your side
A pillow can press an earbud into the ear, making it uncomfortable or irritating the skin. If that happens, remove the AirPods rather than trying to sleep through the pressure. Sleep Foundation notes that side sleepers may prefer low-profile headbands or other designs that avoid a bulky device sitting in the ear. A headband still puts wearable audio equipment on your head, so check that it feels comfortable and does not interfere with hearing sounds you need to notice. Sleep Foundation’s overview of sleeping with headphones covers these options.

Alternatives if earbuds do not work
| Option | Potential benefit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Low-profile sleep-headphone headband | Can avoid an earbud pressing inside the ear and may be more comfortable for side sleeping. | It is still wearable audio equipment; comfort and awareness of alarms or emergencies can vary. |
| Small bedside speaker or white-noise machine | Avoids pressure on the ear and makes volume and timing straightforward to control. | Sound may be audible to your partner. White noise may mask disruptions for some people, but evidence on sleep benefits is mixed and it can disturb some sleepers. |
| Earplugs | Can block common disturbances without playing audio. | They can have ear-related drawbacks too, so comfort and hygiene matter. |
| Room changes, such as carpets or curtains | May help muffle sound without requiring a wearable device. | They do not provide private audio or eliminate every source of disturbance. |
White noise is not established as a proven sleep treatment. Sleep Foundation describes mixed evidence: it may mask background noise for some people, while disturbing sleep or affecting hearing in some circumstances. Sleep Foundation’s review of white noise and sleep explains the uncertainty.
