Set up channel eligibility well ahead of stream day: first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube requires streamers to be at least 16 years old.
1. Make sure your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete it before scheduling your first survival-game broadcast. YouTube also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
2. Choose how to capture and send the game
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder and console streaming. For PC survival gameplay, an encoder is usually the practical route when you want game capture, overlays, microphone audio or other external sources. A webcam or mobile stream can be simpler for basic broadcasts, while a console route avoids the need to capture gameplay through a PC. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to start.
What you need for an encoder setup
- A computer that can run the game and streaming encoder together.
- A stable internet connection with enough outbound upload capacity for your chosen stream bitrate.
- Game capture configured in the encoder; add a microphone, webcam or headset only if you need voice, a face camera or audio monitoring.
- A YouTube Studio stream URL and private stream key.
Choose equipment to solve a specific problem, such as unclear voice audio or a need to monitor sound. YouTube lists an external microphone, webcam and headphones or headset as typical gaming or casual-streaming equipment; the setup guidance does not identify a best model.
#1 Best Overall

3. Create the YouTube broadcast and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream. Set its title, privacy and other details. Choose private or unlisted if you are rehearsing without a public audience.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings into the encoder’s streaming settings.
- Keep the key out of screenshots, overlays and public posts. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.” If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
4. Configure gameplay, audio and upload bandwidth
Capture the game and check sound
In your encoder, select the game capture source and confirm that the correct game window or display appears. Add your microphone or headset input if you are speaking, and check that game audio and voice can both be heard without one drowning out the other. If using a webcam, frame and preview it before the broadcast. Exact encoder menus differ, so verify the selected sources in the encoder you use rather than relying on a particular button name.
Allow upload headroom
Check outbound upload bandwidth, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate. For example, if your encoder sends a total bitrate of 10 Mbps, aim for roughly 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under the conditions you expect to stream in. This is guidance, not a guarantee: other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available to your stream.

5. Rehearse before the event
- Prepare the encoder at least two hours before the planned stream, as YouTube advises.
- Start sending the encoder feed at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that gameplay is visible and that microphone and game audio are present.
- Open the watch page on both a computer and a phone to verify the viewer experience.
- Use a private or unlisted broadcast for practice if you do not want the test to be public.
These checks help catch source-selection, sound and connection issues before viewers arrive. YouTube’s timing recommendations are preparation guidance, not a promise that a specific connection or setup will work.
6. Go live, manage latency and end the stream
Start the encoder feed and confirm it appears in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, follow YouTube’s scheduled-stream flow to go live. Choose a latency setting according to how much you value immediate chat interaction versus playback stability: lower latency can make conversation feel more immediate, but YouTube says it may increase buffering. The right balance depends on the connection and audience experience you want.

Common problems and fixes
- Live streaming is not available: Verify the channel and enable live streaming in advance. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and recent live restrictions can affect eligibility.
- The preview is blank: Check that the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and that the game capture source points to the game or display currently running.
- Viewers report buffering or a choppy stream: Check upload capacity during the broadcast and leave YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% headroom above the total bitrate. Reduce competing network use or lower the encoder bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Microphone or game audio is missing: Confirm the correct audio input is selected in the encoder and that its level is active; verify audio in Live Control Room before going public.
- The wrong stream appears on the channel: Recheck the stream details and privacy setting in Live Control Room, and make sure the encoder is connected to the intended scheduled broadcast.
- The key may have been exposed: Replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key before the next stream.
Copyright and channel rules for survival gameplay
Gameplay broadcasts still need to follow YouTube’s copyright and platform rules. Be especially careful with music included in a game, licensed tracks played in the background, and other material you do not have permission to use. A game’s availability for purchase or play does not by itself establish that every soundtrack or other included content is cleared for streaming. Review the game publisher’s streaming policy and YouTube’s current rules before relying on a particular title or soundtrack. A live broadcast also does not guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization; eligibility and content review are separate matters.
