Before you connect FFmpeg
Check that the channel can go live
YouTube’s current general guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Confirm eligibility in YouTube Studio before troubleshooting FFmpeg. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance
Confirm rights to every recording
Telugu language, devotional lyrics, or a traditional melody does not by itself establish that a particular recording can be rebroadcast. Use recordings you own or have permission to stream. This technical setup cannot establish the rights status of your playlist.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
- In that stream’s settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS URL if your FFmpeg build supports it. Use the exact URL YouTube displays rather than assuming a generic ingest address. YouTube’s encoder setup steps · YouTube’s RTMPS instructions
YouTube describes stream keys as password-like: they identify the encoder feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Do not publish a real key in a screenshot, article, public command history, or repository. If it may have been exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room Stream tab and update FFmpeg with the replacement. Manage live stream settings

Choose compatible FFmpeg settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. For a straightforward FFmpeg file workflow, the example below uses H.264 video and AAC audio; your installed build must include the required encoders and RTMPS protocol support. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s published ingestion guidance values, not a guarantee that your network or computer can sustain them. Select the bitrate row for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. If your upload connection cannot reliably carry the chosen bitrate, test a lower resolution or bitrate before broadcasting.

- Use progressive scan and square pixels.
- For the example below, 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP produce a two-second keyframe interval.
- YouTube lists stereo AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz stereo sampling, and Rec. 709 for SDR color.
- Test audio levels, motion, and synchronization with representative material; the settings are not validated for your specific machine or files.
Send a playlist file to YouTube with FFmpeg
For one file, FFmpeg documents the generic real-time publishing pattern as ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. The command below adapts that pattern to an H.264/AAC stream. Replace the input path and quoted destination with the actual media file and the URL/key format shown by YouTube for your stream.

It assumes 30-fps H.264/AAC SDR video, an FFmpeg build with the needed encoder and protocol support, and a destination formatted according to YouTube’s current stream settings. The example’s bitrate is not a substitute for selecting YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your chosen output. Looping a file as a simple playlist
For a single video that should repeat, add FFmpeg’s input loop option before the input:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input-file" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast

-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv "RTMPS_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY"This repeats that input; it does not create a varied playlist. To rotate among multiple devotional recordings, prepare a playlist workflow that presents the files as one continuous input and verify transitions, audio, and encoding before sending it to YouTube. The exact playlist method depends on your FFmpeg build and media formats; do not assume that concatenating files with different codecs, dimensions, frame rates, or audio layouts will work without normalization.

Preview, start, and end the broadcast
- Run FFmpeg and confirm it is sending data to the URL YouTube supplied.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming stream preview. Check that both picture and audio are present and that playback is stable.
- When the preview is correct, click Go live for the scheduled event. For an event, YouTube advises setting up the encoder stream at least two hours in advance and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event so you can check the preview.
- Monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast. When finished, stop sending content and use Live Control Room’s end-stream control where applicable.

- FFmpeg cannot connect: Confirm that you copied the URL for this stream from Live Control Room, that the stream key is current, and that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says the scheme and server should be
rtmps; for a particular SSL error, it suggests specifying port 443. Follow the exact URL format shown for your stream. RTMPS troubleshooting - YouTube receives no signal: Check that FFmpeg is still running, that the input file can be read, and that the full destination URL and key were copied correctly. Look for FFmpeg errors before changing bitrate settings.
- The preview appears but video or audio is wrong: Check the selected input streams, encoding options, audio track, and file compatibility. Test with representative playlist files before going live.
- The stream drops or buffers: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate and whether the computer can encode in real time. Test a lower resolution or bitrate when needed; monitor stream health rather than assuming a listed bitrate guarantees stability.
- The stream key was exposed or reset: Reset it in the Live Control Room Stream tab, then replace the destination in your FFmpeg setup. Treat the new key as a secret too.
