You can broadcast a radio-style YouTube Live stream from Ubuntu Server by feeding FFmpeg audio plus a still image or other video, then publishing the encoded output to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. First confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel; then choose settings for your media and upload connection, test the feed, and run FFmpeg under an operational setup you have verified on your server.

Before you start

This workflow suits a headless Ubuntu server that will play audio files or a playlist with a visual. The exact FFmpeg command depends on the audio format, visual, playlist method, Ubuntu release, and available CPU or hardware encoder. Do not assume one command or package build works unchanged for every server.

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and permission to create or manage a stream.
  • Audio you have the rights to broadcast, plus a still image, loop, or other suitable video source.
  • An FFmpeg build that supports the inputs, encoders, and RTMP(S) protocol you plan to use.
  • A stable server connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen output bitrate, with headroom for variation.

Enable YouTube Live and create a stream

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours, so complete this step before diagnosing FFmpeg or Ubuntu. Channel permissions must allow the operator to create and manage the stream.

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Go Live / Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select the stream you intend to use and note its selected ingest protocol.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the RTMPS endpoint if the stream configuration and your FFmpeg build support it; RTMPS encrypts transport.

YouTube describes the stream key as password-like. Do not put a real key in a public script, repository, or article, and avoid exposing it in shell history or process listings. If someone obtains it, reset it in Live Control Room and update the server configuration.

Prepare Ubuntu and check FFmpeg

Install FFmpeg from a trusted source appropriate to your Ubuntu release, or check the existing installation before designing the command. The available Ubuntu manpage reference is for Bionic and does not establish package versions or features for other releases.

  1. Check the installed build with ffmpeg -version.
  2. Inspect available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders; confirm the video and audio encoders you intend to use are present.
  3. Validate that the build accepts your media inputs and supports the needed RTMP(S) output protocol. Consult the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version when options differ.
  4. Identify whether your audio is one file, a playlist, or a live input. Decide how the visual will behave during the broadcast and how audio and video will stay synchronized.

For file inputs, FFmpeg’s real-time input pacing option, -re, is a useful building block so a file is read at its intended playback rate rather than sent as fast as possible. Input looping, playlist handling, filters, and synchronization are input-specific: validate those options against your actual files and FFmpeg version.

Choose a video and audio output

An audio radio stream still needs a video feed in the usual YouTube Live encoder workflow. Pair the audio with a still image, a looping visual, or another valid video source. A still can be adequate for a simple radio presentation, but use a representative test if the real stream includes motion.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; it specifies CBR, up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds, and advanced audio recommendations of 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo. For a conventional SDR starting point, H.264 video with AAC stereo is a common choice. Choose the video bitrate from YouTube’s table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate appropriate to every output.

Setting Practical choice What to check
Video source Still image, loop, or other valid video alongside audio Confirm the image dimensions or video output are accepted and that audio remains synchronized.
Video codec H.264 is a conventional SDR starting choice; YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS Check that your FFmpeg build has the selected encoder and enough compute capacity.
Audio codec AAC stereo is a conventional choice; YouTube also lists MP3 Advanced guidance recommends 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo.
Rate control CBR Use YouTube’s current recommendation for the selected video codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Frame rate and keyframes Up to 60 fps; two-second keyframe interval recommended Do not exceed a four-second interval.
Video bitrate Use the relevant entry in YouTube’s encoder settings table Recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; ensure the server’s upload rate can sustain the selected bitrate.

These are technical recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or uninterrupted delivery. A higher resolution or frame rate can also increase encoding load and bandwidth use.

Assemble and run the FFmpeg publishing command

Build the command from the actual inputs rather than pasting a generic line that may not match your media. FFmpeg’s documented RTMP publishing examples use FLV output, and its protocol documentation describes real-time pacing for file inputs. The broad structure is:

  1. Add the audio input and the selected visual input. For file-based inputs, use real-time pacing where appropriate.
  2. Set the output frame size, frame rate, video and audio codecs, CBR behavior, keyframe interval, and bitrates according to the chosen YouTube settings.
  3. Append the YouTube ingest URL and stream key in the output configuration, using the URL for the selected RTMP or RTMPS protocol.
  4. Use the RTMP-compatible output format required by the chosen FFmpeg workflow, then run the command and watch its output for input, encoder, or connection errors.

Do not treat that outline as a universally runnable command: file formats, loop behavior, filters, output URL syntax, codec availability, and synchronization vary. Keep the secret key out of public logs and shared command history. For unattended operation, use a tested secret-storage approach suited to the server account and deployment rather than embedding the key in a world-readable script.

Test the stream and check stream health

Before relying on the broadcast, run a private or unlisted test where appropriate. YouTube recommends testing with conditions representative of the intended stream and says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm Live Control Room receives the feed and reports stream health.
  • Listen for audio and verify that the visual appears at the intended dimensions and frame rate.
  • Test representative audio transitions and any visual motion, not only a silent or static startup screen.
  • Check that sustained upload capacity exceeds the selected stream bitrate with headroom, and monitor for network or encoder warnings.
  • Monitor the feed during operation; successful startup alone does not establish that a long-running connection will remain healthy.

YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. For radio without a need for real-time audience interaction, favor stable delivery over the lowest latency setting.

Keep a long-running stream manageable

A server can run FFmpeg without a desktop session, but a reliable 24/7 deployment requires more than launching one process. The right service manager configuration and restart behavior depend on the Linux account, file paths, secret handling, and playlist method.

  • Test what happens when FFmpeg exits, the network drops, or the server reboots; verify recovery rather than assuming it.
  • Keep audio and visual files available at their configured paths after reboot, and confirm permissions for the account that runs FFmpeg.
  • Inspect logs and set up appropriate log retention so repeated failures do not silently consume storage.
  • Check the stream in Live Control Room after restarting the process and after a server reboot.
  • Do not promise uninterrupted uptime based only on using a service manager; the server, network, media source, and YouTube ingest all affect continuity.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules

YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider for the rights needed to exploit live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants. A purchased copy of a recording or a personal-use subscription does not by itself establish broadcast rights.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It may warn, replace the live image, interrupt, or terminate a stream when detected content remains. Even licensed music can be interrupted if the rights holder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm that your permissions cover the intended livestream and resolve allowlisting where applicable before going live.
