Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can send a podcast to YouTube Live by creating a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, then running FFmpeg in a Docker container to read your chosen media input and send it to YouTube. For the ordinary encoder workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Docker can restart an exited FFmpeg container, but it cannot by itself confirm that the broadcast is healthy or recover every network failure.
This guide’s example is a prerecorded media file—not a live microphone or camera feed. The exact FFmpeg input, codecs, bitrate, and output settings depend on your podcast format and selected YouTube ingestion protocol, so validate them with your own files and current documentation before going live.
Understand the three parts of the setup
- YouTube Live provides the broadcast destination and encoder configuration, including the stream URL and secret stream key. A broadcast represents the event; a stream resource holds the encoder transmission configuration, as Google explains in its broadcasts and streams overview.
- FFmpeg reads your chosen input, optionally encodes audio or video, muxes the output, and sends it to YouTube over the selected ingestion protocol.
- Docker runs the FFmpeg process in a container. A restart policy can restart a container after it exits under specified conditions; it does not ensure the input is correct, the network is available, or YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
The command and container example below assume one prerecorded video file containing podcast audio and video. If your podcast is audio-only, uses a still image, or comes from a live microphone and camera, the input and possibly encoding steps must change. There is no single command established for every source type.
Choose RTMPS or HLS before configuring FFmpeg
RTMPS: the usual encoder route
YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live ingestion. It is the secure extension of RTMP. Choose the RTMPS URL and stream key provided for your YouTube setup, and consult YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance and RTMPS ingestion guide for protocol-specific requirements.

HLS: a separate, segment-based route
HLS is an alternative with its own stream key, HTTPS ingestion URL, and format constraints; do not mix HLS requirements with RTMP/RTMPS settings. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Its Help page specifies segments between 1 and 4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments, TS format, no byte ranges, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. Review the current YouTube HLS setup requirements and HLS developer guide before building an HLS command.
The FFmpeg example later in this guide is for an RTMPS encoder workflow, not HLS. Do not substitute an HLS URL into it and assume the protocols are interchangeable.

Create the YouTube broadcast and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to use. Confirm the event’s visibility, schedule, and other broadcast settings there.
- Open the broadcast’s streaming or encoder configuration and select the intended ingestion protocol. For the ordinary encoder workflow, use the RTMPS option YouTube recommends.
- Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that setup. The URL is the destination; the key identifies your encoder transmission. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or commit it to source control.
- Keep the key out of the command text you share. The example uses an environment variable placeholder, but the method for securely injecting that variable depends on how you deploy Docker. Configure secrets using current authoritative guidance for your deployment rather than assuming an environment variable is safe in every context.
Check the media input and encoder settings
Identify what FFmpeg will read
For this example, the input is a local prerecorded file mounted into the container at /media/podcast.mp4. Confirm that your chosen Docker image includes an FFmpeg build able to read that file and that the mount exposes the path inside the container. If the file contains only audio, or you intend to pair audio with a still image, use an appropriate video source or construct a different FFmpeg input graph; this example does not supply those source-specific options.
Choose pass-through or encoding deliberately
FFmpeg can sometimes pass through compatible audio and video streams without re-encoding, or encode them to match your selected YouTube protocol and output configuration. Which is appropriate depends on the media streams, the FFmpeg build, and current YouTube requirements. Do not paste options for multiple codecs into one command: select a supported codec and confirm the input/output compatibility first.

YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance, accessed on 2026-10-03, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio in its general guidance, and up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. For audio, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1; its advanced audio recommendations are 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular file or encoder command is compatible. See the current YouTube encoder settings page for the protocol and format you select.
Set bitrate from your connection and target quality
Run a reliable upload speed test and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain, leaving headroom for normal network variation. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. A bitrate value cannot be responsibly fixed for this example because the target resolution, frame rate, input, and upload capacity are unspecified.

Run FFmpeg in Docker
The following is a command pattern, not a tested YouTube recipe. Replace the image with an FFmpeg image you have verified, confirm its input path and options, provide the RTMPS destination and key through your deployment’s chosen secret mechanism, and validate the resulting URL format against YouTube’s current encoder instructions. The stream key is deliberately represented by a placeholder.
docker run --name podcast-stream
--restart unless-stopped
-v /path/to/your/media:/media:ro
-e YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL='YOUR_RTMPS_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY'
YOUR_VERIFIED_FFMPEG_IMAGE
ffmpeg -re -i /media/podcast.mp4
-c:v YOUR_COMPATIBLE_VIDEO_CODEC_OPTIONS
-c:a YOUR_COMPATIBLE_AUDIO_CODEC_OPTIONS
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL"
-reasks FFmpeg to read the file at its native rate, which is generally relevant when sending prerecorded media in real time; check the current FFmpeg documentation and your source workflow.-inames the mounted input. The read-only mount helps prevent the container from modifying the host media file.- The codec option placeholders are intentional. Replace them with a coherent choice based on the actual streams and current YouTube requirements; do not leave placeholder strings in a command you run.
-f flvis shown as an RTMP-family output muxer pattern. Verify compatibility with the FFmpeg build and RTMPS destination you use; FFmpeg documents RTMP-family protocols and an RTMP FIFO-muxer example, but that example is not a complete YouTube configuration. See FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg documentation.--restart unless-stoppedasks Docker to restart the container if it exits, unless you deliberately stopped it. Choose a policy that fits your operating model rather than treating restart behavior as stream monitoring.
For production use, avoid putting the stream key directly into a shell history, publicly visible process configuration, or an image. The exact secret-injection approach is deployment-specific; verify it against the current Docker documentation and your hosting environment’s security model.

Choose Docker restart behavior with its limits in mind
Docker documents always, unless-stopped, and on-failure[:max-retries] restart policies. on-failure is driven by a non-zero exit and does not restart a container just because the Docker daemon restarts. With a manually stopped container, Docker does not automatically restart it until the daemon or container is manually restarted. Docker says the restart policy takes effect after the container has started successfully for at least 10 seconds. See Docker’s automatic-start documentation for current behavior.
A restarted FFmpeg process may encounter the same bad input, invalid key, unsupported option, or network failure again. FFmpeg documents an RTMP FIFO muxer example with recovery attempts after temporary network failures; it is general RTMP documentation, not a tested YouTube-specific container recipe. A container restart policy and FFmpeg-level recovery solve different failure cases, and neither replaces checking YouTube’s stream health.
Test and monitor before relying on the stream
- Start the container before the scheduled broadcast or during a controlled test. Confirm from Docker logs that FFmpeg opens the intended input and does not exit with an error.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, verify that the encoder signal arrives and review stream-health indicators and messages. Do not assume a running container means viewers can see or hear a healthy stream.
- Listen and watch the preview. Check that audio is present, synchronized, and at an appropriate level; confirm the video is the intended content and motion is acceptable.
- Test with source material whose audio and movement resemble the real podcast stream, as YouTube recommends. Review the stream-health messages and adjust the input or encoding configuration before relying on it.
- If the process exits, inspect container logs and restart history, then fix the underlying FFmpeg, file, key, or network issue. If FFmpeg remains running but YouTube reports a problem, investigate the protocol, destination, encoder settings, and connection rather than relying on Docker to restart it.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits immediately or reports that it cannot open the input | Host-to-container mount, file path, permissions, or unsupported input format | Check the mounted path inside the container and verify the FFmpeg build can read the file. |
| YouTube receives no encoder signal | Incorrect RTMPS URL or key, wrong selected protocol, outbound network access, or FFmpeg output configuration | Compare the destination and protocol with the active YouTube stream setup, keep the key private, and review FFmpeg logs. |
| Container keeps restarting | FFmpeg is repeatedly exiting because of a persistent configuration, input, or connection error | Inspect the exit code and logs; fix the cause before expecting a restart policy to help. |
| Container is running but stream health is poor | Encoder settings, sustainable upload bitrate, source behavior, or protocol mismatch | Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, retest with representative content, and confirm settings against the selected protocol’s current requirements. |
| Stream stops during a temporary network interruption | FFmpeg transport behavior and network stability | Review FFmpeg’s documented RTMP recovery options and your network path; do not treat Docker restart policy as proof of uninterrupted recovery. |
| HLS URL or settings fail with the RTMP-style command | Protocol-specific output and segment requirements were mixed | Use the HLS-specific YouTube setup and consult its requirements; do not reuse the RTMPS command unchanged. |
Or let it run in the cloud
