Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo switch between event sessions and breaks without sending viewers to a new watch page, schedule one YouTube Live event and run it through an encoder such as OBS Studio. Build a Session scene and a Break scene in the encoder, then switch between them while keeping the stream connection active. YouTube Studio manages the scheduled event, preview, stream credentials, and start and end controls; the encoder creates and switches the pictures and sound viewers see.
Choose webcam streaming or an encoder
A basic webcam workflow is a direct computer-and-webcam route and can suit a simple, single-camera broadcast. For distinct session and break layouts, an encoder is the more suitable option: it can combine camera, slides, graphics, and media sources into scenes, but it takes more setup and rehearsal. You do not need a dedicated hardware encoder; YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started. YouTube’s webcam setup guide and encoder setup guide describe the two routes.
Check channel eligibility before event day
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so complete activation well before the event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and methods.
Schedule one event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Enter the event title, description, visibility, date and time, and other requested settings.
- Share the scheduled watch-page link with attendees. Scheduling creates an upcoming destination viewers can visit and can allow them to opt into reminders.
- Keep that event open across session and break changes. For a broadcast intended to feel continuous, changing the encoder scene avoids creating separate watch experiences for each segment.
YouTube documents scheduling in its encoder setup guide and the available settings in Manage live stream settings.

Connect OBS or another encoder
- In the event’s Live Control Room, find the stream URL and stream key in the stream settings.
- In OBS, open the stream settings, select YouTube if offered, or enter the server URL and stream key provided by YouTube. Labels and layout may vary by encoder.
- Keep the stream key private and share it only with production staff who need it. It tells YouTube where the encoder should send its feed. If you reset the key in Live Control Room, replace the old key in the encoder before reconnecting.
- Use the current YouTube encoder requirements and test with your actual equipment and network. Resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, hardware needs, and upload capacity depend on the setup; do not assume one value fits every production.
For key management and stream settings, consult YouTube’s settings guide.
Build session, break, and optional end scenes
In OBS, a scene is a prepared layout of sources. OBS’s overview even uses “Break” as an example scene name. Add only the elements needed for each part of the program:
- Session: the speaker camera, presentation capture, slides, microphone, or other event sources.
- Break: a still break card, countdown text, or a locally stored video, with suitable background audio if needed.
- End (optional): a closing card or final credits. You must still end the broadcast in YouTube Studio.
OBS supports image, text, capture, and media sources; see its Sources Guide and OBS Studio Overview Guide. A media source can play a file, but it does not give you permission to broadcast that content. Use material you created or have rights to use.

Switch scenes without interrupting the event
- For a staffed event, assign an operator to click the Session and Break scenes or use configured hotkeys.
- Use OBS Studio Mode if the operator should prepare or inspect the next scene before it replaces the live output.
- At each scheduled intermission, switch Session → Break, then Break → Session when the program resumes. Keep the encoder connected and the same YouTube event active.
- Rehearse transitions and media behavior. Confirm that video, audio, and any countdown behave as intended; do not rely on an untested automatic switch.
The OBS overview documents scenes, transitions, hotkeys, and Studio Mode. The reviewed official documentation describes manual scene controls, not a YouTube-native event agenda scheduler.
Rehearse and run the broadcast
Before the event
- Test the same computer or encoder, sources, settings, network, scene order, and break media planned for the live show.
- Check that the intended output appears in YouTube’s preview and verify both picture and audio.
- Open the scheduled watch page on a second device and check that the intended audience can access it.
- Rehearse the final stop as well as the session-to-break transitions.
YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours in advance and starting them at least 15 minutes before the event. It also recommends checking preview, audience access, and audio/video monitoring. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not guarantees of a successful broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
When the event starts and ends
- Start the encoder early and confirm the correct feed in Live Control Room preview.
- When ready, click Go Live in Live Control Room.
- Switch between the prepared scenes as the program moves through sessions and breaks.
- At the end, click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder output. YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours.
See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for its go-live and end controls.

Decide on viewer playback and protect the content
YouTube’s stream settings include DVR and latency choices. Decide whether viewers should be able to pause or rewind and how much delay the event can tolerate; lower latency can increase playback buffering. Review the available choices in YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
Use original or properly licensed graphics, music, and video in both session and break scenes. A file playing successfully in OBS does not establish that you have broadcast rights. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules and enforcement can also affect whether a channel may stream, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance before the event.

Or let it run in the cloud
For an event that needs a live operator switching camera and presentation scenes, an encoder gives you direct control over those layouts. If instead you want uploaded video to keep a YouTube channel live between or beyond staffed events, StreamNeo is a cloud option for looping uploaded videos and playlists: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera.
Quick Recap
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
