For wireless PC VR, connect the PC to the router or access point with Ethernet, then connect the headset to that same local network over Wi-Fi. Use 5 GHz when supported, and place the access point close to the play area with as few obstructions as possible. The right setup depends on the streaming app: for example, Steam Link lists a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 as its minimum router capability, while Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E are also listed.

Check that your headset and streaming app are compatible

Before changing network settings, confirm that the app supports your headset and its installed software version. Requirements are app-specific and can change with software updates.

Steam Link’s current support page lists Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro; PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, and PICO Neo 3; and HTC Vive Focus Vision and Vive XR Elite. Check the page for the app’s operating-system requirements and current device support: Steam Link for Meta, HTC and PICO headsets.

Connect the PC by Ethernet and the headset by Wi-Fi

  1. Connect the PC’s Ethernet port to a LAN port on your router, or to the access point’s wired network. Avoid relying on a Wi-Fi connection for the PC when an Ethernet connection is available. Steam Support says, “A wired network will provide the best result, and we highly recommend using an Ethernet connection if your Remote Play streaming client supports it.”

    TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
    • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
    • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
    • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
    • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
    • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  2. Connect the headset to the Wi-Fi network provided by that router or access point. The PC and headset need to be able to communicate on the same local network. For Microsoft Mixed Reality Link with Quest 3, Microsoft specifically requires the wired PC and headset to be on the same subnet.

  3. Choose the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network on the headset when the headset, router, and streaming app support it. For Steam Link, Steam lists a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 as the minimum router capability; it also lists Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. VRChat recommends the PC and Meta Quest use the same network, preferably 5 GHz Wi-Fi on a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router. That is VRChat guidance, not a universal requirement for all PC VR streaming.

    • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.

Steam’s network guidance explains that 5 GHz has shorter range than 2.4 GHz, but generally faces less interference from neighboring networks and wireless devices. Choose it when the signal remains strong in the play area; the band label alone cannot compensate for a weak or obstructed connection. See Steam Link’s suggested network settings.

Place the router or access point near the play area

The headset’s Wi-Fi connection is the wireless part of this setup, so its signal path matters. Put the router or access point near the space where you play, and reduce the distance and number of obstacles between it and the headset. Walls, floors, metal objects, and electronic equipment can weaken or disrupt the signal.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

If the router is in another room or behind several obstacles, moving it or adding an access point near the play space may help more than changing the Wi-Fi standard. When adding equipment, configure it so the PC and headset remain on the same local network; avoid a guest network or other isolation setting that prevents devices from communicating.

Choose between your current router and an additional access point

First test the existing router in the intended play area. A newer router is worth considering only if the existing setup cannot meet the streaming app’s requirements or cannot provide a suitable, stable 5 GHz connection where the headset is used.

Configuration Best fit What to check Trade-off
Use the existing router It supports the app’s required band and Wi-Fi standard, and provides a strong connection at the play area. Verify the headset is on 5 GHz where supported, the PC is wired, and both devices are on the same local network. Lowest setup complexity; placement or signal limitations may remain.
Add or replace a router/access point near the play area The current equipment cannot provide the required Wi-Fi capability or a suitable signal in the play space. Confirm app compatibility and ensure the new equipment keeps the headset and PC on the same local network or subnet where required. Requires additional equipment and configuration. Wi-Fi 6 by itself does not guarantee lower latency.

The official guidance cited here does not provide controlled latency measurements comparing router models, so it cannot support a model ranking or a promised millisecond improvement.
