You can send a continuous YouTube stream from a Windows VPS by enabling live streaming on your channel, creating a stream in YouTube Studio, entering its current RTMPS server URL and stream key in an encoder on the VPS, and verifying the output in YouTube’s preview. Keeping it running unattended is a separate reliability task: remote access alone does not guarantee that the encoder survives a disconnect, reboot, or provider maintenance.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- A Windows VPS whose supplied edition, licensing, remote-access method, and operating policies you have confirmed with the provider.
- An encoder installed on the VPS and media or a live input to send. OBS Studio is one possible encoder, but the exact installation and persistence steps depend on the software and Windows image you choose.
- The current server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or expose it in screenshots.
- A plan with enough CPU, memory, disk, and sustained outbound network capacity for your actual encoding workload. There is no universal VPS size established for OBS or other encoders.
YouTube documents how an encoder connects to its service; it does not certify a particular Windows VPS plan or guarantee that an encoder will keep running after remote disconnection or host maintenance.
1. Enable live streaming and create a YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to create a stream, or use Manage to schedule one.
- Open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key for this stream. Use the values shown in your account rather than a URL remembered from an older setup.
YouTube’s encoder workflow requires a stream created or scheduled in Live Control Room and those stream details entered in the encoder. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings.
2. Choose and provision a Windows VPS
A VPS is a remotely administered Windows host, not a streaming guarantee. Before paying for a plan, ask the provider what Windows edition or image it supplies, whether Windows licensing is included, how remote access is enabled, and what account and security controls apply. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop support guidance discusses Windows Pro editions; it is not a definitive rule for every Windows VPS image, so confirm the requirements for the provider’s specific offering.

Check operational policies
- Does the encoder process continue after you disconnect Remote Desktop, and what happens if you sign out?
- How are Windows updates, planned maintenance, and host reboots handled?
- What recovery options exist after a reboot or application crash, and can you reach the host to intervene?
- What are the limits or terms for sustained outbound traffic?
- What CPU allocation, memory, disk, and data-center location does the plan provide?
Microsoft’s published VM sizing guidance is workload-dependent and concerns Remote Desktop session hosts; it is not an OBS or YouTube-encoder sizing benchmark. Choose resources based on your source resolution, frame rate, codec, number of simultaneous streams, and the provider’s network capacity, then validate the actual workload. Do not treat a generic VPS specification as proof that it can encode reliably.
3. Install an encoder and configure YouTube output
- Connect to the VPS using the provider’s documented remote-access method.
- Install an encoder suitable for your workflow and media. If you choose OBS Studio, consult its current official documentation for installation and software-specific settings; YouTube’s instructions do not establish OBS’s Windows VPS requirements or auto-recovery behavior.
- Open the encoder’s streaming settings and select YouTube or a custom server option, depending on the encoder.
- Choose RTMPS when available. If the encoder does not offer a YouTube preset, open Live Control Room’s Stream settings, reveal the RTMPS URL using the lock icon, then enter that exact URL and the stream key in the encoder.
- Save the settings securely and start the encoder. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health feedback before relying on the broadcast.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream connection. Do not substitute an old or memorized ingest URL. Google’s developer documentation specifies TLS over port 443 and SNI hostname authentication for encoder implementations. If the encoder reports an SSL error or timeout, verify its RTMPS support, the exact URL and protocol, and the port; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says port 443 can be specified if SSL trouble persists.

4. Set encoder parameters and verify the signal
Use settings that match your source and available upload capacity. YouTube’s published guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, with up to 60 fps. It lists constant bitrate (CBR), square pixels, SDR Rec. 709, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are output constraints, not a VPS sizing formula.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate no higher than your source and encoding capacity can sustain.
- Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes that setting; keep it at four seconds or less.
- Choose an audio codec supported by YouTube and your encoder, and use an audio profile compatible with the selected stream settings.
- Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health feedback while the encoder is sending. If health degrades, investigate the encoder load and VPS network capacity rather than assuming the plan is sufficient.
5. Make the stream recoverable when unattended
Do not assume closing or disconnecting Remote Desktop leaves the encoder running, and do not assume a reboot will restore the stream. The behavior depends on the Windows image, encoder, provider session policy, and recovery configuration. The official remote-access and general VM-sizing guidance does not provide a verified OBS auto-start or auto-restart recipe for a VPS.

- Ask the provider how remote sessions behave on disconnect and sign-out, and what maintenance or reboot events can interrupt the VM.
- Configure a recovery method appropriate to the exact Windows image and encoder. Confirm how the application should launch after a reboot and what happens after a crash; use the provider’s and encoder’s current documentation rather than assuming a generic procedure applies.
- Rehearse the failure cases before depending on the setup: disconnect Remote Desktop, reconnect and inspect the encoder, then test a controlled restart and confirm that the stream returns in Live Control Room.
- Monitor the stream health and have a way to regain access if the encoder stops or YouTube drops the connection.
A successful test in one session does not establish uninterrupted operation through future provider maintenance, network trouble, or software failure. Confirm the provider’s service terms and decide what level of monitoring and manual intervention your use case requires.
6. Understand YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That rule does not promise a single automatically archived video for a continuous stream that exceeds 12 hours. If keeping a recording of a longer broadcast matters, plan a separate recording or segmentation approach and check current YouTube guidance for the method you intend to use.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Checks and next steps |
|---|---|
| Live streaming is not available | Confirm the channel’s live-streaming activation is complete. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder signal | Confirm a stream was created or scheduled in Live Control Room and that the current stream URL and key were entered correctly. |
| SSL error or connection timeout | Use the exact RTMPS URL displayed in Stream settings; confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and check the server/protocol and port. YouTube troubleshooting points to these checks, and its guidance says port 443 can be specified if SSL trouble persists. |
| The stream stops after disconnecting Remote Desktop | Check provider session and sign-out behavior and inspect whether the encoder process is still running. Remote access does not itself guarantee process persistence. |
| The stream does not resume after a reboot or crash | Review the provider’s startup and recovery options and the encoder’s documentation for the exact Windows image. Test recovery before relying on unattended operation. |
| Stream health degrades under load | Compare the encoder workload—resolution, frame rate, codec, and concurrent streams—with the VPS CPU, memory, and sustained outbound capacity. Adjust the workload or plan and validate the result in YouTube’s stream-health view. |
Costs and the managed alternative
VPS costs depend on provider, Windows licensing, resource allocation, sustained transfer terms, and any monitoring or backup services; compare those items rather than relying on a generic “streaming VPS” label. For prerecorded video where the goal is simply to keep a YouTube channel live, a managed cloud service can avoid administering a general-purpose Windows host.
