You can set up a TP-Link Wi-Fi extender with the Tether app, a web browser, or WPS—if your router supports it. For the most reliable start, plug the extender in near your router, complete setup using the instructions for your exact model and hardware revision, then move it toward the weak-signal area.

Choose a setup method

Method What you need Best fit
Tether app A smartphone, a compatible extender, and access to the extender’s temporary Wi-Fi network A guided setup on a phone
Web browser A phone or computer connected to the extender’s Wi-Fi network An alternative when you prefer browser setup or cannot use the app
WPS A router and extender that both support WPS Button-based pairing

TP-Link documents all three methods for the RE305 V4, but screens, controls, and setup details can vary by model. Check the guide for the model and hardware revision printed on your extender before following model-specific steps (TP-Link setup guide; TP-Link troubleshooting and support).

Prepare the extender

  1. Plug the extender into an outlet near your router.
  2. Wait for the Power LED to become solid before starting configuration.
  3. Have your router’s Wi-Fi password ready. You will need it for Tether or browser setup.

Set it up with the Tether app

  1. Connect your phone to the extender’s temporary Wi-Fi network. The network name is shown in the instructions for your model.
  2. Open TP-Link Tether and follow the prompts to find the extender.
  3. Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password when prompted.
  4. Finish the remaining prompts in the app.

If Tether does not find the extender, confirm that your phone is connected to the extender’s temporary Wi-Fi rather than your usual home network. TP-Link also recommends turning off cellular data as a troubleshooting step in some guidance.

Set it up in a web browser

  1. Connect a phone or computer to the extender’s Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open a browser and go to tplinkrepeater.net.
  3. Sign in or create the extender login if prompted.
  4. Follow the configuration screens to select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password.

The login and screen sequence can differ by model. If the setup page does not appear, check the instructions and support page for your extender’s exact hardware revision.

Set it up with WPS

  1. Check that both the router and extender support WPS, then consult the extender’s model-specific guide for the correct controls.
  2. Start WPS on the router.
  3. Use the extender’s WPS control as directed in its guide.
  4. Wait for pairing to complete, then check the extender’s Wi-Fi network name and connection according to the model instructions.

After WPS setup, the extended network may use the router’s name or a name ending in EXT; this depends on the method and model. If pairing fails or WPS is unavailable, use Tether or browser setup instead.

Move the extender to improve placement

After configuration, unplug the extender and place it roughly halfway between the router and the weak-signal area, where it can still receive a usable signal from the router. Treat halfway as a starting point, not a guarantee: an outlet beyond the router’s usable range will not provide a good connection. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guidance covers placement and setup issues.

If setup does not work

  • Tether cannot discover the extender: Connect the phone to the extender’s temporary Wi-Fi; try turning off cellular data.
  • The extender will not connect to your home network: Re-enter the router’s Wi-Fi password carefully, then reboot and retry.
  • WPS pairing fails: Confirm WPS support on both devices and follow the exact model guide, or switch to Tether or browser setup.
  • The page or button sequence looks different: Check the model and hardware revision printed on the unit, then use that revision’s support page. TP-Link notes that products and hardware versions can vary by regional availability.

If you need to replace or buy an extender, first verify that the model and hardware revision are available in your region and compatible with your router; the RE305 V4 is an example in TP-Link’s setup instructions, not a universal recommendation (TP-Link RE305 V4 guide).
