Connect a compatible keyboard, launch DeX from Quick settings, then adjust the workspace and input settings for your work. First check your tablet’s exact model and software version: keyboard-cover fit and DeX features vary across the Galaxy Tab range.
1. Check your Galaxy Tab and keyboard compatibility
Before buying a keyboard cover or following a menu path, find the tablet’s full model number and software version. Samsung’s Book Cover Keyboards are model-specific, so a cover for one Galaxy Tab may not fit another. Samsung also notes that screens and settings can vary by software version and carrier. Check Samsung’s keyboard-and-mouse guidance and DeX tablet instructions for your device.
Samsung describes combining DeX with a Book Cover Keyboard and tablet as a “laptop-mode experience.” That is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that every Tab supports every keyboard or DeX feature.
2. Connect a keyboard and pointer
For a compatible Book Cover Keyboard, attach it to the tablet and connect it as instructed for that model. Its built-in touchpad can serve as the pointer, so a separate mouse is not required. Samsung notes that some touchpad gestures are unsupported.

You can also use a USB or Bluetooth keyboard, and pair or connect a mouse if you want separate pointer control. These are alternatives, not requirements for standalone DeX. For Bluetooth pairing, use the tablet’s Bluetooth settings and follow the accessory’s pairing instructions; USB connection depends on the tablet and accessory ports.
3. Start DeX on the tablet
On supported tablets, swipe down from the upper-right area with two fingers to open Quick settings, then tap DeX. On compatible keyboards, Samsung also documents a shortcut: press Fn and the DeX key together.

Some tablets running Android 16 with One UI 8.0 have an additional way to start standalone DeX from the Home screen. That flow is version-specific, so use the Quick settings route if the Home-screen option is not present. Samsung’s workspace instructions describe the available routes and their software qualifications.
4. Decide whether you need an external display
Standalone DeX uses the Galaxy Tab’s own screen. If you need a larger workspace, some configurations can connect to a monitor or TV by cable or wirelessly. Availability and steps depend on the tablet and display.

Wired monitor or TV
Connect a compatible DeX or HDMI cable between the tablet and display. Unlock the tablet if prompted and accept the DeX prompt. Not every model supports every wired connection, so check Samsung’s support guidance for your tablet and display before buying a cable.
Wireless display
Where supported, open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connect wirelessly, choose the display, and approve the prompts on the tablet and display. The wireless option may not appear on every model or with every display.

5. Tune DeX and keyboard settings for work
While in DeX, open Settings > Samsung DeX. Depending on the device and display arrangement, options can include resolution, rotation, font size, screen timeout, keyboard, mouse, touchpad, and sound output. Samsung’s DeX screen guidance describes the relevant controls.
To set the language for a physical keyboard, go to Settings > General management > Physical keyboard. Samsung Keyboard also provides tablet preferences such as languages, text shortcuts, predictive text, and toolbar behavior. The option to show the Samsung Keyboard toolbar while using a physical keyboard appears only when an external keyboard is connected. See Samsung’s tablet keyboard settings.

6. Arrange apps and move between tasks
DeX presents apps in windows and provides a taskbar. Use the window controls to open, minimize, maximize, snap, or close apps, and use the taskbar to move between them. Samsung documents Alt+Tab to switch running apps and Alt+F4 to close the current app. The Windows key may be labeled CMD or Search on some keyboards.
Samsung says the same app generally cannot run simultaneously on the tablet screen and an external display. If you use Android 16 with One UI 8.0, Samsung documents multiple DeX desktop workspaces, with up to four available; this feature is version-specific, not a general promise for all Galaxy Tabs. 7. Exit DeX without losing work
Save your work before turning DeX on or off. Samsung warns that apps running during the transition may close. On current tablets, you can turn off DeX from Quick settings; disconnecting a display cable or using the wireless display disconnect path may also end an external-display session. The exact exit route depends on software version and how DeX is connected. Samsung’s DeX exit instructions cover current routes and version caveats.
