To set up a Samsung Galaxy SmartTag, press its button and follow the prompts in the SmartThings app to register it. You can then open the tag in the app to view its map location. Samsung’s documented location-sharing steps are specifically for SmartTag2: in SmartThings, go to Life → Find → More → Share this device’s location and follow the invitation prompts.

Before you start

  • Install and open SmartThings, and sign in to your Samsung account. Samsung says a Samsung account is required for SmartThings Find: Use SmartThings Find with the SmartThings app.
  • Keep the tag near your phone while adding it. Menus and feature availability can differ by SmartTag generation, region, and app version.

Set up an original SmartTag or SmartTag+

Samsung’s US setup instructions for the original Galaxy SmartTag and SmartTag+ begin by pressing the tag’s button. When SmartThings displays its setup prompt, follow the on-screen steps, choose a location and room when asked, and complete registration. See Samsung’s setup instructions for SmartTag and SmartTag+.

If the setup prompt does not appear

Add the tag manually in SmartThings. Samsung UK lists this path; wording may vary in other regions or app versions:

  1. Open SmartThings and tap Devices.
  2. Tap Add, then Add device.
  3. Choose By brand → Samsung → Tag/Tracker → Galaxy SmartTag.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish pairing. See Samsung UK’s SmartTag and SmartTag+ instructions.

View the tag’s location and find it nearby

  1. In SmartThings, open the registered tag.
  2. Choose the map or view-map control to see its reported location.
  3. For an original SmartTag or SmartTag+, use Search Nearby for signal-strength guidance, Navigate for directions, or Ring to make a nearby tag sound, when those controls are available. Samsung documents these features on its SmartTag and SmartTag+ support page.

SmartTag2 support also describes map finding and navigation, along with found-item and left-behind notification options. The controls shown on your phone depend on the model and app version; consult Samsung’s SmartTag2 guide for that model.

Share a SmartTag2’s location

Samsung documents this sharing route for SmartTag2. Open SmartThings → Life → Find → More → Share this device’s location, then follow the prompts to invite other users. Samsung says invited users can help locate the tag on their devices. The documented invitation procedure is in Samsung’s SmartTag2 guide.

The cited Samsung instructions do not establish that every SmartTag generation or app version has the same sharing controls. If you have an original SmartTag or SmartTag+ and do not see Share this device’s location, do not assume the SmartTag2 menu path applies to your model.

What the map location tells you

A SmartTag location is approximate, not a continuous GPS trail. Samsung’s UK setup guide describes the detected location as approximate. When the tag is out of your phone’s range, nearby participating Galaxy devices can detect its signal and send location information to Samsung’s SmartThings server through the Galaxy Find Network, as described on Samsung’s Galaxy Find Network support page. Updates may therefore be stale or unavailable if the battery is depleted or no participating Galaxy device detects the tag.

Battery details for original SmartTag models

Samsung lists a CR2032 battery for the original SmartTag and SmartTag+ in its US support instructions. That battery detail should not be assumed for SmartTag2; check Samsung’s model-specific information before buying a replacement. Samsung’s US guide estimates about a year for the original models, depending on usage and other factors, while Samsung Gulf’s SmartTag support page states up to 300 days for the model covered there. These are different regional support statements, not a universal battery-life promise for every SmartTag generation.
