A good guinea pig habitat is a large, rectangular, well-ventilated enclosure with a solid nonslip floor, dust-free bedding, constant grass hay, fresh water, several hides and tunnels, and enough room for every animal to move without competition. For a pair, use at least 2 m by 0.5 m (10,000 cm²) of uninterrupted floor space; more room is better. Keep the enclosure dry and clean, place it where household activity is visible but not overwhelming, and protect guinea pigs from wire flooring, fumes, predators, rabbits, and heat.

Start with enough usable floor space

Guinea pigs spend much of their waking time walking, grazing, exploring and choosing where to rest. Measure the floor they can actually use, not the footprint occupied by raised shelves, bulky accessories or a narrow upper level.

Minimum dimensions for a pair

RSPCA Australia suggests at least 2 m by 0.5 m (10,000 cm²) for a pair of companion guinea pigs and notes that a larger enclosure is preferable. A separate RSPCA guideline gives a minimum of 2,500 cm² of usable floor space for one guinea pig weighing more than 450 g, adding 900 cm² for each additional guinea pig weighing more than 700 g. These figures are minimums, not targets; choose the larger practical area when the two recommendations produce different results.

Residents Published minimum to use as a baseline Planning note
One guinea pig over 450 g 2,500 cm² usable floor area A longer rectangle gives more opportunity to walk and run than the same area in a square.
Each additional guinea pig over 700 g Add 900 cm² Increase space rather than relying on extra shelves or cramped accessories.
Pair of companion guinea pigs 2 m × 0.5 m (10,000 cm²), RSPCA Australia recommendation Use more space whenever your room and budget allow.

Choose a long, single-level rectangle

A broad rectangle provides a continuous route for running and makes it easier to position hay, water, hides and a toilet area without blocking movement. Single-level access is simple for older, ill or less agile animals. If you add a platform, treat it as enrichment rather than a substitute for the required floor area.

Build in escape prevention and ventilation

Enclosure sides should be at least 30 cm high. Check every panel connection for gaps, sharp edges and loose fasteners before introducing an animal. Ventilation must be open enough to disperse moisture and ammonia. Do not use an aquarium or another enclosed glass tank: ventilation is inadequate even if the tank appears easy to clean.

Compare enclosure designs by welfare, not appearance

Feature What to look for Why it matters
Usable floor One large, unbroken solid area sized for the group Supports walking, running and separate resting choices.
Width Enough room to pass accessories without squeezing Prevents hides and hay equipment from creating bottlenecks.
Height and security Sides at least 30 cm high with no escape gaps Reduces falls and roaming hazards.
Ventilation Open-sided construction rather than a sealed tank Helps control humidity, ammonia and respiratory risk.
Floor compatibility Solid, nonslip base that accepts dry bedding Protects feet and keeps absorbent material in place.
Cleaning access Panels or doors that let you remove wet bedding and wash surfaces Makes the frequent cleaning routine realistic.
Run attachment A secure way to connect additional exercise space Allows expansion without compromising the main shelter.
Accessory capacity Room for multiple hides, tunnels, hay and water stations Lets each guinea pig retreat and access essentials.

Use a solid floor and safe, dry bedding

Exposed wire flooring is unsafe. Feet can fall through mesh, and pressure from wire increases the risk of painful foot disease. Covering only part of a wire floor does not remove the hazard if an animal can still stand on exposed mesh.

Suitable bedding materials

RSPCA guidance lists paper, paper kitty litter, artificial turf, plant-based material such as hay, and washable fabric mats as suitable choices; RSPCA Australia also lists fleece. Whichever material you select, it must remain dry, low-dust and free of mould. Place enough absorbent material beneath areas where urine accumulates, and provide a comfortable nonslip surface throughout the enclosure.

Bedding option Strengths to evaluate Checks before use
Paper bedding or paper kitty litter Disposable and generally absorbent; easy to remove from wet spots Use a dust-free product and remove damp material promptly.
Washable fabric mats or fleece Reusable, soft and easy to spot-clean when layered over an absorbent base Keep the surface dry, launder regularly and prevent loose edges or chewing hazards.
Artificial turf Washable surface that can provide traction Inspect for fraying, trapped moisture and sharp backing; maintain a dry absorbent layer underneath.
Plant-based material such as hay Natural option that can be used in appropriate areas Replace anything damp, soiled or mouldy rather than letting it remain in the enclosure.

Materials to avoid

  • Pine or cedar shavings: do not use them as bedding.
  • Exposed wire mesh: it can injure feet and contribute to painful foot disease.
  • Aquariums: their ventilation is inadequate for a guinea pig habitat.
  • Any damp or mouldy material: remove it immediately, regardless of the bedding type.

Set up hay, pellets, greens and water

Grass hay is the high-fibre cornerstone of a guinea pig’s diet. Keep it available continuously so animals can graze and support normal dental and digestive function. A hay rack or basket helps keep hay away from urine, faeces, damp bedding and mould.

Arrange the feeding station

  1. Fill a rack or basket with fresh grass hay and position it where every guinea pig can reach it without crowding.
  2. Use appropriate guinea-pig pellets in small quantities rather than allowing pellets to displace hay.
  3. Offer safe, washed leafy greens and introduce any diet change gradually.
  4. Remove food that becomes wet, dirty or spoiled.

Provide water that is accessible and inspectable

Guinea pigs must have clean, fresh water at all times. A bottle or heavy bowl can work; select equipment that is stable, leak-resistant and easy to inspect and clean. Check the water level and the drinking point every day. In a group, make sure each animal can reach the station and consider more than one station if a dominant animal blocks access.

Water equipment Advantages Potential problems to check
Bottle Can keep water off bedding and is convenient to refill Spout blockages, leaks, trapped residue and a mounting height that is difficult to reach.
Heavy bowl Easy to inspect and often natural for drinking Tipping, bedding contamination and rapid fouling if placed in a busy area.

Add hides, tunnels and choice

Provide several shelters and tunnels so every guinea pig can retreat, rest and decide whether to explore. A single hide can become a contested resource; multiple options let animals separate without being isolated.

Place enrichment without blocking movement

  • Put hides at more than one end of the enclosure so a guinea pig can withdraw from activity.
  • Leave a clear walking route between sleeping, feeding and water areas.
  • Offer tunnels and safe chewing opportunities that have no sharp edges, loose threads or escape gaps.
  • Distribute hay or food in ways that encourage searching and foraging rather than placing everything in one pile.

RSPCA identifies hiding, tunnelling, exploring, foraging and chewing as important behaviours. Arrange the habitat where the animals can see normal household activity while retaining a quiet retreat from traffic, sudden movement and loud noise.

Clean on a schedule that controls ammonia

Moisture, faeces and spoiled hay quickly contaminate a small enclosure. UC Davis advises daily bedding changes to prevent high ammonia and contamination. A practical routine combines daily checks with more thorough washing.

Daily checklist

  • Remove wet or visibly soiled bedding, especially beneath water and sleeping areas.
  • Inspect the water container, refill with fresh water and confirm that the drinking point works.
  • Check hay for dampness, urine, faeces or mould; discard contaminated portions.
  • Look over food, hides, tunnels and floor surfaces for contamination.
  • Check panels, doors and accessories for sharp edges, loose parts and escape gaps.

Frequent bedding changes and washing

Change the remaining bedding frequently enough that the enclosure stays dry and odour is controlled; daily full changes are appropriate where wetness or contamination is high. Wash food and water equipment regularly using a method that is safe for guinea pigs, rinse thoroughly and let items dry before reuse. Clean the enclosure surface whenever bedding is removed so residue does not accumulate.

Keep a simple inspection log

Recording the date of bedding changes, water-equipment washing and any damaged accessory helps reveal patterns such as a leaking bottle or one persistently wet corner. Fix the cause rather than repeatedly covering it with fresh bedding.

Keep companions compatible and the environment calm

House compatible guinea pigs together

Guinea pigs generally benefit from compatible companionship. Plan the enclosure for the number and size of animals living there, with enough hides and access points to prevent one animal from controlling all resources.

Never house guinea pigs with rabbits

Do not mix the species. Rabbits and guinea pigs have different needs, and a rabbit can injure or bully a guinea pig even when the animals appear friendly.

Indoor placement

Choose a location with steady household visibility but away from loud, sudden or continuous noise. Keep the enclosure out of direct drafts and away from fumes, smoke and household chemicals. Ensure that curious children and other pets cannot reach through the panels or disturb a resting animal.

Outdoor housing

Outdoor setups require secure protection from predators, temperature extremes, loud noise and weather. Provide shade and a dry shelter, and inspect the enclosure after wind or rain. Guinea pigs tolerate cool conditions better than heat, so monitor closely for overheating and move the habitat to a cooler, shaded location when necessary.

When behaviour needs professional advice

If fear, stress or unusual repetitive behaviour persists after you improve space, shelter, company and noise levels, consult a veterinarian or qualified behaviour professional.

Assemble the habitat step by step

  1. Measure the site. Reserve enough room for the minimum floor area plus access for cleaning, and leave space for a future run if possible.
  2. Install the enclosure. Confirm that the sides are at least 30 cm high, the base is solid and nonslip, and ventilation is open rather than tank-like.
  3. Test safety before adding bedding. Run your hands along every edge, close every panel and check for gaps, loose fasteners and chewable hazards.
  4. Add the floor layers. Lay dust-free bedding or a washable mat with absorbent material beneath areas likely to become wet. Keep all surfaces dry.
  5. Place the hay station. Fill it with grass hay and position it where all animals can reach it while keeping hay above urine and faeces.
  6. Install water. Secure a bottle or place a heavy bowl on a stable surface, fill it with fresh water and verify that each guinea pig can drink.
  7. Arrange food. Add the small pellet portion and washed leafy greens without blocking the main walking route.
  8. Add several hides and tunnels. Provide more than one retreat and leave clear routes between resources.
  9. Observe the first hours. Check that every animal can reach hay, water and shelter, and adjust any bottleneck or contested location.
  10. Start the cleaning routine immediately. Set a daily time for water, hay, bedding and safety checks rather than waiting for odour or visible dirt.
