Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYes—you can run OBS on a remote Linux server and send a continuous broadcast to YouTube. The server needs a suitable graphics/display environment, enough sustained encoding capacity for your scenes and chosen output settings, and a reliable connection. In OBS, connect to YouTube over RTMPS with the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. A continuously running encoder does not guarantee one YouTube replay: streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
Before you begin: check YouTube and OBS requirements
Confirm the channel is eligible to go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream to obtain its connection details. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance and instructions for creating a live stream.
Make sure the remote host can actually run OBS
OBS on Linux is a desktop application, not a background-only daemon. Its published Linux requirements include OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and an X window system or Wayland session. A VPS label alone does not mean a machine has these capabilities, and a headless or very small instance should not be assumed suitable. OBS notes that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee that a particular streaming or recording workload will work; resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity all matter. Check the OBS system requirements and Linux installation guidance for the distribution you choose.
Choose a host based on sustained encoding performance for your actual scenes, graphics/display availability, dependable network egress, remote administration and recovery, and storage if you plan to record locally. The available guidance does not establish a provider, server size, or current price that will work for every workload. A provider-authored Vultr Ubuntu guide is one example of an approach, not a performance guarantee or endorsement.

Set up the remote OBS machine
- Provision a suitable Linux host. Verify the selected instance provides compatible graphics and an X11 or Wayland session, then check that its sustained CPU or other available encoding resources match your planned resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Do not treat a successful installation as proof that the stream can run reliably.
- Install OBS using supported instructions for your Linux distribution. Follow the OBS Linux installation page for the host’s distribution and release, including its graphics prerequisites. The exact package commands vary by distro and version.
- Make OBS accessible for configuration and monitoring. Launch it within the host’s display environment so you can create scenes and inspect the preview. Keep remote access private and secured; do not expose a desktop session publicly just to make OBS reachable.
- Create the scene and sources. Add the video, audio, capture, or other sources your broadcast needs. Preview the complete scene and check audio levels before going live. The load increases with scene complexity, so test the intended configuration rather than an empty scene.
- Plan process recovery and monitoring. Arrange a way to detect a stopped OBS process, a disconnected stream, or failed audio/video, and a safe recovery procedure. Keep the host powered and network-connected. These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
Connect OBS to YouTube with RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL. Use OBS’s built-in YouTube RTMPS service if it is available, or enter the current RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room. OBS’s service list includes rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2, but the URL YouTube currently supplies for your stream takes precedence. See YouTube’s encoder connection guidance.
- Get the stream URL and key. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and the stream’s settings. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder.
- Choose the destination in OBS. Open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube RTMPS where available; otherwise select a custom service and enter the current YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key.
- Protect the key. YouTube treats stream keys like a password and address. Do not put one in public configuration, logs, screenshots, or source control. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Save and test the connection. Apply the settings, start streaming when ready, and confirm that Live Control Room receives the signal and displays the expected preview before making the broadcast public.
Choose video, audio, and bitrate settings
Set output to match the content and the host’s sustained encoding ability. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for standard RTMP/RTMPS streams, up to 60 fps, and recommends a constant bitrate (CBR) with a 2-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your resolution, frame rate, and codec, and make sure stable server upload capacity can sustain it. There is no single appropriate bitrate without those details. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Resolution and frame rate: select the output that fits the source material, scene workload, and available bandwidth; do not exceed the host’s tested capability.
- Rate control and keyframes: use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
- Codec: choose a codec supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current settings. Compatibility depends on the host’s software and available encoding resources.
- Audio: configure an audio format and bitrate supported by YouTube, then listen to the preview for missing, distorted, or unbalanced sound.
- SDR or HDR: a basic SDR setup is simpler. HDR has separate codec and device constraints, so verify YouTube’s dedicated requirements before configuring it.
Test the stream and prepare for long runs
Do a test broadcast before relying on the server. YouTube recommends checking the stream preview and monitoring audio and video. Confirm the intended scene, sound, resolution, and playback, and verify that any local recording is being written and continues to grow. You can use a private or unlisted test as appropriate to your channel and broadcast plan. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
For a long-running broadcast, keep the server and network available, protect credentials, monitor the incoming stream and playback, and define who or what will respond to an interruption. If a replay matters, maintain an independent recording and check that it is usable; a running encoder alone is not an archive plan.

Understand YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Very long streams may also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. These are YouTube platform limits, not limits on how long OBS can remain running. If you need a durable replay, use local recording or plan archive-friendly segments rather than relying on a single stream that exceeds 12 hours. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

- OBS opens to a blank display or will not start: check that the Linux host has the required compatible graphics support and an active X11 or Wayland environment. A headless server may need a suitable display setup; do not assume a minimal VPS provides one.
- The server runs OBS, but encoding overloads: reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, or select an encoder the host can sustain. Retest the full workload; minimum OBS requirements do not guarantee capacity.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: verify that OBS is using RTMPS, that the current server URL and stream key match the Live Control Room stream, and that the host has outbound connectivity. Replace a key if it was exposed.
- The preview appears but playback has buffering or dropped frames: compare the configured bitrate with stable server egress and YouTube’s current recommendation for the selected output. A nominal network speed is not proof of sustained capacity.
- Video is visible but audio is missing or wrong: inspect the selected audio source, OBS mixer meters, and Live Control Room preview; listen during the test rather than relying on the meters alone.
- The broadcast stops after a disconnect or host restart: inspect OBS and host status, restore the process using your recovery plan, and verify the new signal in Live Control Room. Recovery arrangements require monitoring; OBS running on a remote machine is not itself an uptime guarantee.
- No replay appears after a long broadcast: check stream duration and YouTube archive status. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so retain a separate recording when the archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube rather than to operate OBS scenes on a server, StreamNeo is a simpler cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
