You can set up a compact NAS for local file sharing and backups by fitting compatible drives, connecting the unit to your router and AC power, configuring storage, then creating user accounts and shared folders. “Portable” needs qualification: the Synology DS223 is a compact two-bay network appliance, not a documented battery-powered travel NAS. It needs wired Ethernet and AC power.

What “portable NAS” means in this setup

A NAS is storage connected to a network, so a typical home or small-office unit is designed to stay plugged into a router and power outlet. The Synology DS223 illustrates the distinction: Synology lists two SATA drive bays, a wired 1GbE RJ-45 port, AC power, dimensions of 165 × 108 × 232.7 mm, and a weight of 1.28 kg on its product page accessed October 4, 2026 (Synology DS223 specifications). It is compact enough to move, but those specifications do not establish battery operation or travel rating.

If by portable you mean taking files with you, a NAS can still serve that role while it remains at home or in an office; clients connect over the local network, and remote access requires a separately configured and secured path. Synology’s BeeStation FAQ likewise says that product has no built-in Wi-Fi and connects to a router by Ethernet (Synology BeeStation FAQ). Neither example should be mistaken for a self-powered travel drive.

Choose the NAS and drives together

Start with the number of drive bays, supported drive types, network connection, physical footprint, power needs, file-sharing protocols, and the usable capacity you need after allowing for redundancy. The DS223 supports two 3.5-inch SATA HDDs or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs and lists SHR, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, and RAID 1 storage configurations (Synology DS223 specifications). Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility list before buying drives.

Raw drive capacity is not the same as usable space. The final amount depends on the selected drives and storage configuration; redundancy configurations reserve capacity to help tolerate certain drive failures. Decide whether capacity or redundancy matters more before creating the storage pool, because changing the arrangement later may require moving or restoring data.

Synology lists a 1GbE RJ-45 port and 17.343 watts of power consumption in access mode for the DS223. These are model-specific vendor specifications, not independent measurements or promises of real-world transfer speeds. The package includes an AC adapter, power cord, RJ-45 cable, and quick installation guide, so an additional Ethernet cable is not automatically required (Synology DS223 specifications).

Set up the NAS on your local network

  1. Install the drives. Fit compatible drives according to the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Keep a note of each drive’s model and capacity.
  2. Connect power and Ethernet. Plug the NAS into AC power and connect its LAN port to your router or network switch. A wired router connection is required for this DS223 setup.
  3. Complete first-run setup. Use the manufacturer’s current setup instructions to discover the NAS, install or initialize its operating system, and configure the storage pool. Screen labels may vary with software version, so follow the instructions for the installed release.
  4. Enable local file sharing. Turn on SMB for common Windows and Mac file browsing, then create named user accounts and shared folders. Grant each account only the access it needs rather than sharing everything with every user. The DS223 lists SMB and other network file protocols; Synology identifies Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, phone, and browser clients as possible access methods (Synology DS223 specifications).
  5. Connect each client. On computers and mobile devices, use the NAS or shared-folder connection flow supported by that device and enter the NAS address and authorized account. Keep the NAS and clients on the same local network for ordinary home or office sharing.

Configure backups separately from file sharing

A shared folder makes files available on the network; it does not, by itself, create a separate backup. Enable the intended computer or mobile-device backup workflow, then configure a distinct NAS backup task for important NAS data. Synology describes full-device or selected-folder backups, multiple destinations, and point-in-time snapshots for supported setups (Synology data backup options).

RAID is not a backup. It can help a storage pool remain available after certain drive failures, but it does not protect against accidental deletion, ransomware, theft, fire, flood, or multiple drive failures. Synology’s BeeStation FAQ explicitly distinguishes backup protection from RAID’s role (Synology BeeStation FAQ).

Synology describes the 3-2-1 approach as keeping three copies of data, on two storage media or devices, with one copy offsite (Synology Knowledge Center, article last updated May 8, 2026: backup methods and 3-2-1 guidance). A second copy on an external drive can be useful; storing or disconnecting that drive away from the NAS can reduce the chance that one incident affects both copies.

When USB Copy is enough—and when it is not

Synology’s USB Copy can start a copy task when an external device is plugged in, making it convenient for selected files. It does not back up applications or system configurations and lacks cross-file deduplication (Synology backup methods). Choose a backup method that covers what you actually need to restore, and keep an additional offsite copy for data that must survive a local disaster.

Remote access when you are away

A NAS configured for local sharing is not automatically available over the internet. Synology’s external-access quick-start material describes using a DDNS hostname, but that alone is not a complete security procedure (Synology DDNS setup). For remote use, follow the current security guidance for your exact NAS and software version; do not expose SMB directly to the public internet.

Test that recovery works

Before trusting the setup, restore a sample file from the backup destination to a different folder or device and open it. A successful copy job shows that data was written; a restore test confirms you can retrieve a usable file. Repeat the check after changing the backup task or destination.
