You can run a prerecorded video or playlist to YouTube Live from a DigitalOcean Ubuntu Droplet without leaving a desktop computer on. Install FFmpeg on the Droplet, send the video to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, and supervise the process so it can restart after a failure or reboot. A server does not supply the video or guarantee uninterrupted streaming: you must test the media, encoding load, network and recovery process before relying on it.

Choose a direct FFmpeg setup for a simple loop

For one prerecorded feed, the simplest architecture is FFmpeg on the Droplet publishing directly to YouTube Live. The Droplet is the always-on host; FFmpeg reads the media and sends the feed; YouTube is the destination. You do not need OBS or an intermediate streaming server for this workflow.

DigitalOcean’s Ubuntu 22.04 Nginx-RTMP tutorial demonstrates sending a file with FFmpeg and describes the -stream_loop -1 option for repeating it indefinitely. Its example targets an Nginx-RTMP server, however, so use the YouTube ingest URL from your own stream settings as the destination rather than copying the tutorial’s local RTMP destination. The tutorial is not a complete, validated headless YouTube deployment.

Prepare YouTube Live before launch

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select a stream, then open its stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key.

  2. If you have never enabled live streaming on the channel, allow time for activation. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

  3. Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot or log. Store it in a protected configuration or environment mechanism and restrict who can read that configuration.

  4. After starting FFmpeg, check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health information. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow includes a separate Go Live action; an encoder connection alone may not start the public broadcast.

Create and prepare the DigitalOcean Droplet

  1. Create an Ubuntu Droplet in a region appropriate for your operation and audience, then connect to it over SSH. Install FFmpeg using the current package instructions for the Ubuntu release you selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Place the video files on the Droplet and confirm that FFmpeg can read them. For a playlist, decide whether you need a fixed sequence or a single file loop; validate the transitions and audio in a test before unattended use.

  3. Choose a Droplet based on measured workload rather than an assumed minimum. The required CPU and network capacity depend on whether you copy compatible streams or encode, on the media and selected output settings, and on the workload. Monitor CPU, memory, network use and YouTube stream health during a representative test.

Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan-Cooled Heavy-Duty Aluminum Alloy Case
    • KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
    • SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
    • SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
    • IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
    • VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.

DigitalOcean’s SRS Marketplace listing describes a more capable media-server option with RTMP, SRT, HLS, WebRTC, FFmpeg transcoding, recording and multi-platform restreaming. That adds a server layer and configuration; it is not required for a basic file-to-YouTube push. Listing details and versions can change.

Send the file to YouTube with FFmpeg

Configure FFmpeg to read the local media in real time, loop it if needed, and publish to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The exact command depends on your input file, codecs, whether you are copying or encoding streams, and the ingest URL format provided for your broadcast. There is no single command established here as tested for every Droplet and media file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a repeated single file, DigitalOcean documents -stream_loop -1 as an indefinite loop option. Adapt the tutorial’s file-publishing pattern to YouTube’s destination, and keep credentials out of the command history and any logs that may be readable by others. Check YouTube’s current ingest requirements and confirm the resulting preview and audio before going live.

Set and test encoder quality

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance as a starting point, then test using audio and motion similar to the actual stream. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for the available connection and monitoring stream health while broadcasting.

Setting YouTube guidance How to apply it
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS; up to 60 fps Use a format and frame rate supported by your encoding workflow and input. Check the preview and health indicators.
H.264 bitrate 5 Mbps recommended for 720p at 30 fps; 10 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular Droplet or connection can sustain the feed. Match bitrate to output quality and available upload capacity.
Rate control CBR recommended Use constant bitrate for the encoded output where applicable, then check for dropped frames or stream-health warnings.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Set the encoder interval and verify that the stream is accepted.
Audio AAC or MP3 Listen to the preview for levels, missing sound, clipping and loop-boundary issues.
Transport RTMPS recommended for encrypted transport Use the secure ingest option when YouTube provides it, and keep the stream key protected.

The bitrate and keyframe figures above are YouTube Help recommendations and limits in guidance accessed in 2026, not measured results for a DigitalOcean setup. A higher-resolution source is not automatically a better stream if the server or connection cannot sustain the chosen settings.

Make the process recover after failure or reboot

A command that works in an SSH session is not yet an unattended service. Once a manual test succeeds, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor configured to start at boot and restart after an unexpected exit. On Ubuntu, systemd is one possible implementation, but the DigitalOcean tutorial cited above does not provide or validate a YouTube-specific systemd unit.

  • Protect credentials: ensure the service can read the stream key without exposing it in a public script or broadly readable configuration.
  • Bound log growth: configure log rotation or another limit so a long-running process cannot fill the Droplet’s disk with output.
  • Monitor the right signals: watch the process, server resources and YouTube’s stream-health status, and arrange an alert for unexpected stops or unhealthy output.
  • Test recovery: deliberately restart the service and reboot the Droplet during a planned test. Confirm that the process reconnects and that the stream returns in YouTube Studio.
  • Plan maintenance: account for operating-system updates and changes to media files, playlist paths or credentials. Retest after changes.

Automatic process restarts help with a crashed encoder or reboot; they do not prevent every network, host, media or YouTube-side interruption. Validate the recovery path rather than treating a running service as proof of continuous delivery.

Plan around YouTube archives and content rules

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single nonstop broadcast will be stored as one unlimited recording. If an archive is important, verify current platform behavior for your planned stream length and arrange a separate recording strategy where needed.

Before broadcasting, confirm you have the rights to the video, music and other material in the loop. Replaying content as a live stream does not itself grant permission to use it. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies, and check that the media and playlist are appropriate for the channel; the encoder settings guide is not a substitute for those rules.

Compare the ways to keep a YouTube stream running

Option Best fit Trade-off
StreamNeo — cloud YouTube streaming Want uploaded videos or playlists to run continuously without administering a server. Always-on cloud streaming, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and a first day free.
FFmpeg on a DigitalOcean Droplet Want direct control of a server-side prerecorded file or loop. Requires Linux command-line setup, credential handling, process supervision and resource testing.
DigitalOcean SRS Marketplace stack Need a media server for protocol bridging, transcoding, recording or restreaming features. Adds another server layer and configuration; unnecessary for a simple direct FFmpeg push.
Hosted continuous-streaming service Prefer not to administer a VPS or supervisor. Compare each provider’s current features, availability, pricing and program terms. YouTube lists Gyre and Upstream as cloud options; details vary by provider.
OBS on a desktop Need desktop-based production with live sources, a camera or interactive scene switching. YouTube describes OBS as free and open source, but leaving a desktop application out of the workflow is the point of a server-only prerecorded loop.

For the self-managed route, check DigitalOcean’s current account pricing and measure the intended workload before committing. No guaranteed Droplet size, region-specific performance or total 24/7 bandwidth cost is established here.
