To set up a new Google Pixel, back up your old phone and any important third-party app data, then follow the on-screen transfer or restore steps. After setup, set a screen lock and review security, privacy, display, and battery settings. You do not need to change every default: some features are optional, and availability and menu labels vary by Pixel model and Android version.

Before you start: prepare both phones

  • Back up your old phone before beginning. Separately back up data in third-party apps, such as WhatsApp, using that app’s own process.
  • Charge both phones and have the old phone’s screen-lock PIN ready.
  • Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection. A USB-C cable is useful if Wi-Fi is weak, but is not required for every transfer path.
  • If you plan to use a physical SIM, have a SIM tool available. Pixel 10 and later phones sold in the US do not have a physical SIM slot, according to Google’s setup guidance.

Initial setup guides you through SIM or eSIM, data transfer, Pixel features, and personalization. Follow the prompts on your screen; exact steps can differ by model.

Transfer data or restore a backup

Choose the route that fits what you have available. Google describes automatic transfer for most Android phones running Android 5.0 or later and iPhones running iOS 8.0 or later, but what can be copied varies. See Google’s Pixel setup and transfer instructions for compatibility details.

Option Use it when What to know
Direct phone-to-phone transfer Your old phone is available. Android-to-Pixel transfer can use a cable or Wi-Fi. Google recommends a cable for Pixel 8 and later. For Wi-Fi transfer, Google’s instructions require the old Android phone to run Android 5 or later and the Pixel to run Android 12 or later.
Restore from Google Account backup Your old phone is unavailable, or you have a backup you want to use. During setup, sign in to the relevant Google Account, select the backed-up device, and choose the available data categories to restore.

When prompted, choose a full or customized transfer if that choice is offered. Keep both phones nearby and follow their on-screen instructions until the process finishes.

If you skipped transfer during setup

On Pixel 9 and later, Google says you can transfer or restore data after initial setup using Settings > Accounts & backup > Android Switch. A post-setup cloud restore is limited to one previous device; changing the source device requires resetting the Pixel, which erases data. Do not reset just to try another source unless you have verified your backup and are prepared to set up the phone again.

Pixel 9 and later may also show a “Finish setting up your Pixel” notification. Earlier models may offer a setup reminder, but after some time, completing setup could require a factory reset. Use an in-settings finish/setup option when available, and check support instructions for your exact model before resetting.

Secure the phone first

Set a screen lock

Choose a PIN, pattern, or password under the phone’s security or lock-screen settings. A screen lock protects access to the device and is also required as a backup when setting up fingerprint unlock if one is not already in place. Pick a method you can remember without making it easy for someone else to guess.

Add biometrics only if they suit you

Fingerprint or face unlock can make unlocking and some sign-ins or purchases more convenient, but these features are optional and vary by model. Fingerprint sensor placement differs: it is on the back on Pixel 5a and earlier, under the display on Pixel 6 and later, and on the power button on Pixel Fold. Google warns that anyone whose fingerprint you add can unlock the phone and authorize purchases with your account. Add only people you trust, using their own profiles where appropriate.

Check security status and device-finding options

Open Settings > Security and review any device or account warnings. Check Play Protect, Find My Device, and the available security and Google Play system updates. Google’s security guide lists these options, but the exact labels and paths can vary by Android version. For current instructions, see Google’s security and privacy settings guide.

Review privacy and lock-screen information

In Settings > Privacy, review the controls that affect what apps can access and what appears on your phone. A useful first pass is to check the Privacy Dashboard and Permission manager, then decide whether each app still needs its camera, microphone, location, or other permissions.

Smooth Display is a tradeoff, not a required fix

On supported models, Smooth Display increases refresh behavior for a smoother feel and uses more battery. Its availability and supported refresh rates vary by Pixel model. Battery Saver disables Smooth Display. If smoother scrolling matters more to you than battery runtime, leave it on where available; otherwise, turn it off or let Battery Saver manage the tradeoff. Google lists model support and behavior in its display settings guide.

Keep the battery defaults unless you have a reason not to

Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization are already on when a Pixel is received. Google recommends keeping them on; the phone learns usage patterns and may take a few weeks to work optimally after a new phone or reset. Avoid turning off battery optimization broadly as a setup step.

Battery Saver and Extreme Battery Saver are tools for extending runtime when you need them, not settings that must stay enabled all the time. For their behavior and controls, consult Google’s battery settings guidance.
