You cannot currently enroll a YubiKey or another FIDO2/WebAuthn USB or NFC security key as a Steam Guard authenticator. Valve’s documented Steam Guard choices are email access codes and the Steam Mobile Authenticator. If you want the strongest supported setup, install the official Steam Mobile app, add its authenticator, confirm your phone, and store the recovery code offline.
What Steam Guard does
Steam Guard is an additional login-security layer for devices Steam does not recognize. Instead of relying only on your account password, Steam asks for a separate code or approval when a new or otherwise unrecognized device signs in. This helps protect an account if someone obtains the password but cannot complete the second step.
Valve’s current account-security documentation describes two Steam Guard methods:
Recommended Free Tools
- Email Steam Guard codes: Steam sends a special access code to the email address associated with the account when a login needs verification.
- Steam Mobile Authenticator: the Steam Mobile app generates codes and can approve sign-ins through the app.
The mobile method is the one Valve describes as providing the best level of Steam account security because you authorize logins with a physical device you possess. That wording refers to your phone running the Steam app, not to a USB security token.

Why a YubiKey or FIDO2 key is not a Steam Guard option
Steam’s documented enrollment process contains no option to register a FIDO2 key, WebAuthn credential, USB security key, NFC key, passkey, or hardware token for Steam Guard. The Steam Guard settings and the official setup instructions cover email codes and the mobile authenticator instead.
As a result, plugging in a generic security key during a Steam login will not create a Steam Guard enrollment flow. A key that works with Google, Microsoft, GitHub, a password manager, or another WebAuthn-enabled service does not automatically work with Steam. Compatibility is controlled by the service that implements WebAuthn or passkeys; the key itself cannot add that support to Steam.
Do not buy a YubiKey or another token specifically on the assumption that it can replace Steam Guard Mobile. Unless Valve announces a supported hardware-key method, treating one as Steam Guard-compatible would leave you with an unsupported sign-in setup.

Choose between Steam’s supported methods
Both documented methods add a check beyond your password, but they behave differently when you sign in and when you lose access to a device.

| Email Steam Guard | Retrieve the special access code from the account email and enter it in Steam. | The email account receiving Steam Guard messages. | Loss of the email account can block code delivery; use Steam’s account-recovery process if you cannot regain access. |

The mobile app’s time-based Steam Guard code changes every 30 seconds and can be used only once. QR-code sign-in and one-touch approvals can avoid manually typing that code when the particular Steam sign-in screen offers those choices.
Set up Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator
Use the official Steam Mobile app and keep the account password available. The labels can vary slightly with app updates, but the enrollment path is the Steam Guard tab followed by Add authenticator.
- Install the official Steam Mobile app. Obtain it from the official mobile-app store for your phone, then open it and sign in to the Steam account you want to protect.
- Open Steam Guard. In the app, select the Steam Guard tab. This is where the app displays current codes and authenticator controls.
- Choose Add authenticator. Start the enrollment flow by selecting Add authenticator. If the app shows more than one account, confirm that you are adding the authenticator to the intended account.
- Provide a phone number or choose the alternative shown by Steam. Steam may ask for a phone number for confirmation. If that is not possible, use Steam’s I don’t have access to a phone number option when it is offered and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Enter the confirmation code. Type the code Steam sends during enrollment. Do not share this code with another person, including someone claiming to be Steam Support.
- Save the recovery code. Steam displays a recovery code after enrollment. Write it down or otherwise store it offline in a secure place that you can reach without the phone. Do not leave the only copy in the same phone that holds the authenticator.
- Finish and test the app. Return to the Steam Guard tab and verify that a current code or approval option appears. The code is designed for one use and refreshes every 30 seconds, so enter a newly displayed value rather than an older screenshot or copied code.
The recovery code is not a routine login code. It is an emergency credential for recovering access when the enrolled phone or authenticator is unavailable, so protect it like a password.
Use the mobile authenticator when signing in
Approve a one-touch request
Some Steam sign-ins can be approved directly from a notification or approval screen in the Steam Mobile app. Open the request, check that it corresponds to a login you initiated, and approve it only if the details are expected. Reject unexpected prompts and change your password if you suspect someone else is attempting to sign in.
Scan a QR code
Steam can offer QR-code sign-in. On the computer or other device, display the Steam login QR code. In the Steam Mobile app, use the QR-sign-in function and follow the approval prompt. This keeps the sign-in confirmation inside the app instead of requiring you to type the rotating code.
Enter the rotating code
If the login asks for a Steam Guard code, open the Steam Guard tab, read the current time-based code, and enter it before it changes. Each code changes every 30 seconds and is valid only once. If it changes while you are typing, discard the old value and enter the newly displayed code.
Keep the authenticator recoverable
Enrollment is only half of the setup. A phone can be lost, reset, replaced, damaged, or wiped. Store the Steam recovery code offline in a secure location, such as a protected paper record or another offline method you control. Avoid keeping the only copy in a cloud note or on the same phone that could become inaccessible.

If you lose the phone or cannot use the authenticator
You still have the recovery code
Start Steam’s account-recovery or authenticator-removal process and provide the recovery information when Steam requests it. The exact screens depend on the account state and the recovery route Steam presents. After access is restored, enroll the authenticator on your replacement phone and create a new secure offline record of the recovery information if Steam issues a replacement.
You have neither the phone nor the recovery code
Use Steam Support’s account-recovery process. Be prepared to follow the ownership-verification steps Steam provides. Do not rely on a third-party “Steam recovery” service, and do not send an authenticator code to anyone offering to recover the account.
You can still receive email
Email access may help you begin the recovery process or receive account messages, but it does not substitute for the mobile recovery code in every situation. Follow the recovery instructions Steam shows for your account rather than attempting random codes.

If you do not use the mobile authenticator, Steam can send a special access code by email when you sign in from an unrecognized device. Verify that you can access the email account tied to Steam and that Steam messages are not being filtered into a spam or junk folder.
Email is simpler to deploy because it does not require installing the app or carrying an enrolled phone. It also creates a dependency on the security of your email account: anyone who controls that mailbox may be able to receive Steam Guard messages. Protect the email account with its own strong, unique password and the strongest authentication method that service supports.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
There is no “Add authenticator” option
- Confirm that you are signed in to the official Steam Mobile app, not a third-party app or a mobile browser.
- Open the app’s Steam Guard tab and check that you are viewing the intended account.
- Update the official app through your phone’s app store and sign in again.
- If the option remains unavailable, use Steam Support’s account and authenticator help rather than attempting to register a generic hardware key.
The confirmation code does not arrive
- Check that the phone number or contact method shown during enrollment is correct.
- Wait for the current message before requesting repeated codes; entering an older code after a newer one is issued can fail.
- Use the I don’t have access to a phone number option if Steam presents it and follow that route.
- If delivery still fails, continue through Steam Support’s recovery guidance.
A time-based code is rejected
- Read the code currently displayed in the Steam Guard tab and enter it immediately.
- Do not reuse a code that has already been submitted or that has changed on screen.
- Check that the phone’s date and time are set automatically; a significantly incorrect clock can interfere with time-based codes.
- If repeated current codes fail, stop guessing and use Steam’s support process so you do not trigger additional account-security checks.
An unexpected approval request appears
Reject it. A prompt you did not initiate can indicate that someone has your password and is attempting a login. Change the Steam password from a trusted device, secure the email account associated with Steam, and review Steam’s support guidance if the attempts continue.
Where a hardware security key can still help
FIDO2 and WebAuthn keys remain useful for services that explicitly support passkeys or security-key enrollment. You can register a key with those services and use it as an additional sign-in factor there, subject to each service’s compatibility rules. That separate capability does not make the same key a Steam Guard authenticator.

Keep separate recovery records for each service; a Steam recovery code cannot recover a different account.
Steam Guard setup checklist
- Install the official Steam Mobile app and sign in to the correct Steam account.
- Open Steam Guard and select Add authenticator.
- Complete phone confirmation, or use I don’t have access to a phone number when available.
- Enter the confirmation code Steam sends.
- Save the displayed recovery code offline and keep it private.
- Test a QR approval, one-touch approval, or current rotating code before relying on the setup.
- Never share an authenticator code or approve a login you did not start.
- If both the phone and recovery code are unavailable, use Steam Support’s account-recovery process.
Bottom line on Steam hardware keys
Steam does not currently document a way to enroll a USB, NFC, FIDO2, WebAuthn, or YubiKey-style hardware token for Steam Guard. The supported choices are email codes and the Steam Mobile Authenticator. For the strongest documented Steam setup, use the mobile authenticator, keep its recovery code offline, and reserve hardware security keys for services that explicitly support them.
