Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Open your router’s app or web settings, enable Guest Network or Guest Wi-Fi, choose a separate network name and password, then save the changes. If the router offers a setting to block access to your local network or intranet, turn it off for guests who only need internet access. Menu names and isolation behavior vary by router, firmware, and operating mode.
What a guest Wi-Fi network does
A guest network gives visitors their own Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password, so you do not have to share the credentials for your primary network. TP-Link describes the feature as providing secured Wi-Fi access for guests to share a home or office network in its guest-network guide.
A separate SSID does not, by itself, guarantee that visitors are blocked from every device on your home network. Check the router’s local-network or intranet access controls, and confirm how they work in the router’s current operating mode.
Set up the guest network
- Open the router’s controls. Connect to your router and launch its manufacturer app or web interface. If the menu labels below do not match, consult the instructions for your exact model.
- Find the guest-network page. Look for Guest Network, Guest Wi-Fi, or a similar label. TP-Link documents Advanced > Guest Network or Settings > Guest Network on some routers. ASUS provides a Guest Network profile in its app or web interface, while NETGEAR’s Nighthawk app has a Guest WiFi tile.
- Enable the feature and choose a band if prompted. Some interfaces ask which Wi-Fi band the guest network should use.
- Set a distinct network name and password. Choose a recognizable guest SSID and a password different from your main Wi-Fi password. TP-Link advises leaving the SSID visible unless visitors are expected to enter the network name manually; hiding it is not a substitute for access controls.
- Choose an available security option. Select a secured option supported by both the router and the devices guests will use. Available choices differ by product, so do not assume every router presents the same options.
- Review network access controls. If guests only need internet access, disable access to the local network or intranet where that control is available. If the interface separately controls whether guest devices can communicate with one another, decide whether to disable that as well.
- Save or apply the settings. Connect a visitor device to the new SSID and check that it can reach the internet.
Check guest access and isolation
Block access to local devices when possible
Look for a setting that limits guest access to devices on your home network. TP-Link labels a related control Allow guests to access my local network; ASUS calls its setting Access intranet. For guests who only need internet service, turn off local or intranet access if your router provides that choice.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Some routers offer a separate control for communication between guest devices. TP-Link documents guest-to-local-network access and guest-device visibility as distinct choices, so changing one does not necessarily change the other.
Confirm the router’s operating mode
Guest isolation can depend on the router and how it is configured. For Deco systems, TP-Link says guest and main networks are automatically isolated in Router mode. In Access Point (AP) mode, an Allow Local Access switch controls local access. ASUS says the cited internal-network-denial feature works in Wireless router mode and notes differences among Guest Network, Guest Network Pro, and SDN features. See the relevant Deco guest-network instructions and ASUS isolation guide for those product-specific details.

If you cannot find the setting
- Check the router’s manual or support page for the exact model and firmware; guest-network controls are not in the same place on every interface.
- Check whether the router is in router mode or AP mode. A setting may move or behave differently depending on that mode.
- If no guest network or local-access control is available, consult the manufacturer’s documentation before assuming your router can isolate visitors. When considering replacement equipment, verify that the exact model and operating mode support the guest-network and isolation controls you need.
