1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet up your Pixel in a deliberate order: transfer the data you want, confirm what your Google Account actually backed up, create a screen lock, then review security, lost-device, and privacy controls. Google’s instructions and menu labels can vary by Pixel model and Android version, so use Settings search if a path below does not match your phone.
1. Transfer the data you want
If your old phone is available, prepare it before starting the Pixel setup. Google’s new-Pixel preparation guidance describes choosing a Google Account and the data to back up, as well as using a QR code to prepare data from another device.
During initial setup, connect the Pixel to Wi-Fi, sign in to the Google Account you intend to use, and choose the old device or backup when prompted. Select the data categories you want to copy and follow the restore steps. If the old phone is unavailable, Google says you can restore from a cloud backup.
Pixel 9 and later can restore data after initial setup. Google’s later-restore flow is limited to one previous device; to restore from a different prior device using that flow, Google says you must reset the Pixel. Some content may not transfer, so consult Google’s device-specific transfer help if something is missing.

- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment

Confirm the account and backup contents
Before relying on a backup, verify which Google Account owns it and what it contains. Open Backup details in Settings and review the account and recorded data categories. Do not assume every app or type of content is included simply because backup is enabled.
2. Create a screen lock, then add biometrics
Set a PIN, pattern, or password under the phone’s screen-lock settings. Google says a screen lock is used to encrypt automatic and manual backups. It is also the credential required when fingerprint setup begins without an existing lock.

After setting the lock, add fingerprint or face unlock if you find it useful and your Pixel supports it. Fingerprint sensor placement differs across Pixel generations and Fold. Screen-off fingerprint unlocking is documented for Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL—not every Pixel. See Google’s fingerprint setup guidance for model-specific details.
Think carefully before adding another person’s fingerprint to a shared phone: Google warns that enrolled fingerprints can unlock the device and authorize purchases with the account. Google recommends that other users add their fingerprints from their own profiles. Biometrics supplement the screen lock; they do not replace the PIN, pattern, or password.
3. Review security status and updates
Open Settings and look for Security or Security & privacy. Google’s security overview says this area can surface the phone’s and Google Account’s security status, along with recommended or critical actions. Review the available items, including:
- Google Play Protect
- Android security update and Google Play system update
- Screen lock
- Find My Device or Find Hub
- Google Account Security Checkup
Labels and paths may differ on your software. If a named menu is missing, search Settings for the feature rather than assuming it is unavailable.

4. Make sure you can find a lost Pixel
On the phone, confirm that the intended Google Account is present, turn on Location if you want location-based finding, and enable Find Hub’s “Allow device to be located” control. Open Find Hub and verify that the Pixel appears. Google’s Find Hub guidance also describes offline-finding choices: Android devices store encrypted recent locations and participate in the Find Hub network by default, while the available options let you choose a different level of network participation.
Google lists Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series phones as locatable for several hours after the battery runs out or the phone is powered off. This capability is model-specific and time-limited; do not assume it applies to every Pixel.

Prepare account recovery for remote actions
Google says remote locking or erasing through Find Hub depends on 2-Step Verification. Create a backup code so you have a way to complete verification if the lost Pixel is normally your verification method. A physical security key is another optional recovery route, not a required purchase.

Use Privacy Dashboard to see which apps recently accessed permissions, then open Permission manager to review access by type. Google’s permission guidance covers controls that can include location, camera, microphone, photos and videos, contacts, SMS, and notifications.
For location, camera, and microphone, choices can include allowing access all the time (location only), while using the app, asking every time, or not allowing it. The options shown depend on the app, Android version, and device. Match permission to function: grant what an app needs to work, and choose a narrower option when it does not need ongoing or broad access.
Choose other privacy settings for your needs
- Lock-screen notifications: Decide how much notification content is visible while the phone is locked.
- Camera and microphone access: Review the device-level access controls and use them when you want to prevent apps from using either sensor.
- Clipboard notices: Keep in mind that Android may show notices when an app accesses copied content.
- Google location and activity controls: Review what location and activity information is saved to your account and adjust those controls to your preferences.
- Ads settings: Review the available advertising controls if you want to change how ads are personalized.
- Usage & diagnostics: Google says this setting may allow collection of device or other IDs, app interactions, crash logs, and diagnostics; data is encrypted in transit. To change it, use Settings > Privacy > Usage & diagnostics. Details are in Google’s Settings Services guidance.
These controls involve different trade-offs, not one universally best configuration. Choose based on the access and data sharing you are comfortable with.
