Which foldable do you have—Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, Google Pixel Fold, or Motorola razr fold? The menus and multitasking features differ by model and software version. Start with the section for your phone, then set up the app layout and reachability controls you’ll actually use.
Before you change settings: identify your model and software
Foldable features are not consistent across manufacturers or generations. Check your phone’s model and installed software version before following a menu path; labels and availability can change with updates. The steps below reflect the manufacturers’ support guidance available on October 4, 2026, not hands-on testing.
Also check whether the apps you want to use support split-screen, freeform windows, or continuity between the cover and inner screens. A phone feature does not guarantee that every app will display or behave the same way in each layout.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold: set up the taskbar and app layouts
Enable and use the taskbar
Samsung says you can enable the taskbar from Home screen settings or Display. It provides quick access to apps and may show recent or suggested apps. While using an app, drag another app from the taskbar to the screen to open Multi window. Open more than one app
Open the Multi app tray, then drag apps into the position you want for split-screen or pop-up view. Samsung says certain Galaxy Z Fold models can handle up to five apps at once; that limit is model-dependent, not a promise for every Fold.
Choose a dual-column layout for supported apps
On supported models, go to Settings > Display > Screen layout and zoom > Multi view to change supported apps, such as Settings and Samsung Messages, to a dual-column layout. The option is not universal across models.
Choose which apps continue between screens
Samsung documents Settings > Display > Full screen apps for choosing apps to continue across the cover and main screens. Its support guidance warns that some apps may not fully support continuity. A separate Samsung guide describes a Continue apps on cover screen option for selected apps; menu names and availability differ on newer models. You may also add frequently used apps separately to the cover and main screens—adding an app to one does not automatically add it to the other. Cover-screen mirroring can synchronize layouts on listed older Fold generations.

Use Flex mode when an app supports it
To enable the Flex mode panel, go to Settings > Advanced features > Flex mode panel and turn it on. Partly fold the phone and place it on a stable surface; compatible apps can show content above and controls such as brightness, volume, or a touchpad below. Samsung says, “Flex mode compatibility varies by app, with more apps expected to support it in the future.”
Samsung’s support page is internally inconsistent about current model availability: it describes activation steps while also saying Flex mode is not supported on the Galaxy Z TriFold or Z Fold8. Do not assume the feature works on either model; check the specific device and software.
Turn on Samsung’s one-handed mode
- Go to Settings > Advanced features > One-handed mode and enable it.
- Choose Gesture or Button, then use the selected method to shrink the display.
- Move the reduced screen with its arrow or gray top bar. Some features cannot be used while one-handed mode is active.
Google Pixel Fold: create and save an app pair
Start split screen from the taskbar
- Unfold the phone and open an app.
- Slowly swipe up from the bottom edge to reveal the taskbar.
- Drag a second app from the taskbar to either side of the screen.
Google also documents two alternatives: swipe up and hold to open Overview, tap Split, then choose another app; or touch and hold an app icon and choose Split. Google’s guidance says the Pixel Fold can use two apps at a time and that apps can still be used while the phone is folded. Resize, close, or save the pair
Drag the center divider to adjust the panes. Drag it to either side to close one pane. To keep a frequently used combination, open Overview and choose Save app pair; Google says a saved pair can be placed on the home screen or taskbar.
The cited Google guide does not establish a Pixel Fold-specific one-handed-mode setting. For easier reach, place your most-used apps and controls where you can comfortably reach them on the screen you use most; don’t assume a Samsung-style reduced-display option is available.
Motorola razr fold: use the sidebar, split screen, or app combos
Configure the sidebar
Go to Settings > Gestures > Sidebar to customize its apps; enable recent apps if useful. Set an app to open In freeform or In full screen. Drag an app to the center of the screen to change its mode, or drag it to the top or bottom to enter split screen. These steps come from Motorola’s razr fold help; menu labels may vary with software version. See Motorola’s sidebar instructions.

Adjust or save a split-screen setup
Motorola documents controls for resizing split-screen panes by dragging the divider, swapping app positions, changing orientation, and replacing one app. You can also save a frequently used combination as an app combo. The controls are described in Motorola’s razr fold split-screen guide.
Use freeform windows or picture-in-picture where supported
Freeform windows can be moved and resized. Some video and navigation apps support a movable picture-in-picture frame while you use another app. App support determines whether these options are available. The cited Motorola pages do not document a dedicated one-handed mode for this model.

Make the setup fit the way you work
- For a repeated two-app task: Learn the taskbar or sidebar gesture, then save an app pair or combo if your model supports it.
- For easier reach: Use Samsung’s documented one-handed mode if your Fold offers it. On other models covered here, arrange frequently used apps for the screen and hand position you use; a manufacturer-documented reduced-display mode is not established in the cited Pixel and Motorola guides.
- For hands-free viewing: Try Samsung Flex mode with a compatible app and a stable surface. It is optional, and app and model support vary.
- For cover-to-inner-screen switching: Set up continuity only for the apps and models that offer it, then check that each app preserves the layout you need.
