Set up one dedicated horror-film queue, choose a simple rule for picking each day’s movie, and record each film after you watch it. Letterboxd, IMDb, and JustWatch can all help, but they suit different priorities: viewing history, queue control, or checking availability on selected streaming services.

Choose where to keep your horror watchlist

Pick a home for the list based on what you need after adding a film. Product help pages reviewed on October 4, 2026 describe these differences; interface details can change.

Tool Best suited to Queue and viewing history Availability features Plan details
Letterboxd Keeping a watchlist alongside a film diary Offers watchlist add/remove controls and a diary for films you have watched. Marking a film watched, or logging, reviewing, or rating it, automatically removes it from the watchlist. Paying members can receive once-daily alerts when a watchlisted title arrives on a selected service. Alerts use JustWatch data, may lag by up to 24 hours, and do not warn when a film is leaving. Watchlist and diary functions are described separately from the paid-member availability alerts; a paid plan is not required to maintain a basic list.
IMDb Sorting, filtering, and manually ordering a queue You can add titles from their pages, filter the Watchlist by genre and other fields, sort it, or reorder it manually. IMDb recommends rating a title before removing it. No provider-availability filter is stated in the cited Watchlist help page. Not stated in the cited Watchlist help page.
JustWatch Finding queued films available from services you select Supports custom lists that you can use as a horror queue. Custom lists can be filtered by streaming provider. Availability depends on your region and can change. JustWatch’s support page states that free accounts can have up to two lists and Pro accounts up to 100.

There is no universal best choice. Use Letterboxd if a diary is central to your routine, IMDb if you want more control over queue order and genre filters, or JustWatch if choosing from services you already have is the priority.

Build a dedicated queue

  1. Create a separate list for horror. Keeping it distinct from your general watchlist makes the daily choice quicker.
  2. Add titles as you find them. Save a film when it catches your interest rather than relying on memory later. IMDb supports adding a title from its page; Letterboxd provides watchlist add/remove controls.
  3. Set a manageable queue size. There is no required number of films. Add enough options to give yourself a choice, but avoid treating a long backlog as a commitment.
  4. Organize only as much as you need. On IMDb, use genre filtering, sorting, or manual reordering to make the next pick obvious. On JustWatch, filter a custom list by the providers you select when availability is part of your decision.

Choose one film each day

Make the selection rule before you open the list. The simplest approach is to watch the first unwatched title in queue order. If you prefer variety and do not want to deliberate, shuffle the queue or choose a random title. These are practical methods, not platform-specific features.

If you want a themed run, order the films in advance—for example, by subgenre or release era—and follow that sequence. Keep the rule flexible: if a film is unavailable where you are, swap it for the next suitable title rather than letting the routine stall.

Record what you finish

A watchlist is for films you intend to watch; a watched status or diary is a record of films you have already seen. After each movie, mark it watched or log it, and optionally add a brief note or rating. This keeps completed films from looking like tomorrow’s choices.

Letterboxd automatically removes a title from its watchlist when you mark it watched or log, review, or rate it. On IMDb, its help page recommends rating a title before removing it. If you prefer a physical record, a paper movie journal or film logbook can capture the title and viewing date without replacing your online queue.

Check streaming availability without relying on stale listings

Streaming availability varies by country and changes over time, so confirm a film in your own region before planning your day around it. JustWatch custom lists offer a provider filter, which can help narrow the queue to services you select. Letterboxd paying members can enable once-daily arrival alerts for selected services, but those alerts may be delayed by up to 24 hours and do not flag removals.

For the most reliable daily routine, treat availability as a final check, not as a permanent property of the list. Keep a backup title ready in case your first choice is no longer available or is not included with your subscriptions.

A simple daily routine

  1. Open your horror queue and choose the first unwatched title—or use your chosen random method.
  2. Check whether it is available in your region on a service you can use.
  3. If it is not, select your backup title and check that one instead.
  4. After watching, mark it watched or log it, then add a note or rating if useful.
  5. Add new discoveries to the queue when you find them, not during the daily selection itself.
