To keep a prerecorded podcast playing in OBS, make the playback source loop: use a Media Source with Loop enabled for one episode, or a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled for multiple episodes. Then configure OBS to send the stream to your platform and enable automatic reconnect as a recovery aid. The playback loop and the outgoing stream connection are separate: looping media does not prevent network or computer interruptions.
Choose the right OBS source
| Need | OBS source | What to configure | Dependency or consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat one prerecorded episode | Media Source | Select the file and enable Loop. | OBS documents common video formats such as MP4 and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check that your particular file plays correctly in OBS. |
| Play several episodes in sequence | VLC Video | Add the episode files to the source playlist and leave Loop Playlist enabled. | VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The OBS guide lists Loop Playlist as On by default. |
OBS describes the Media Source Loop setting as replaying the file when playback completes; its documented default is Off. Loop Playlist controls whether a VLC source starts again after it runs out of media files. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
Set up a single episode to repeat
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will carry the podcast stream. Scenes are made up of sources, such as media and audio sources.
- Add the recording. In the Sources area, add a Media Source, select the local podcast file, and confirm that the audio and any video appear and play as expected.
- Enable the loop. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. Do not rely on leaving OBS open: without the source’s loop setting, the file can finish and stop playing.
- Check source activation behavior. Media Source also has a separate Restart playback when source becomes active option. That controls what happens when the source becomes active; it is not the loop setting. If the source may be hidden and shown as scenes change, test the selected behavior so the episode does not unexpectedly restart.
Set up a playlist of episodes
- Install VLC before adding the source. The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match its architecture to OBS: the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the scene’s Sources area, add VLC Video, then populate its playlist with the episode files in the order you want them to play.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled. This makes the source start again after it reaches the end of the playlist. If you want a continuous sequence, test the transition from the final item back to the first.
- Choose visibility behavior deliberately. VLC source options include whether playback continues while the source is not visible. Set this to fit your scene design, then test switching scenes. A source that stops when hidden can interrupt playback while another scene is active.
Connect OBS to your live-stream destination
- Get the current ingest instructions from the destination platform. Account eligibility, stream duration rules, server or ingest selection, stream-key handling, and supported encoding settings vary by service and can change. The platform was not specified here, so do not assume that a particular account is permitted to run a 24-hour broadcast.
- Configure OBS at Settings → Stream. Select the service and enter or connect the credentials using that platform’s current instructions. Treat a stream key like a password: do not show it in the stream, screenshots, or public chat, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Set output and video settings to match the platform’s current guidance and your computer’s capacity. Do not choose a bitrate, resolution, or frame rate by guesswork. OBS’s Overview Guide explains output resolution and frame rate and cautions that 60 fps can be taxing; test system resources before relying on a long broadcast.
- Enable recovery in OBS. In OBS’s Advanced settings, configure Automatic Reconnect. This can help OBS reconnect after a connection loss, but the setting is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming and does not fix every computer, network, or platform failure.
Test the whole broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Play the full episode or enough of the playlist to verify that every file loads, audio is audible, and the loop or playlist return works.
- Check the stream at the destination, including sound level, picture, and any on-screen material. Confirm that the destination is receiving the stream rather than relying only on OBS’s preview.
- Test scene changes if you use more than one scene, particularly whether media continues playing while hidden or restarts when it becomes active.
- Make sure the computer will not sleep, shut down, or lose power during the broadcast. OBS running on a computer still depends on that computer, its operating system, and its internet connection remaining available.
- Monitor the stream during an initial run. A loop handles completed playback; it does not watch for every source, system, or connection failure.
Keep the content and destination rules in view
A continuous stream is still subject to the destination platform’s current live-streaming rules and account requirements. Check those rules directly before scheduling a long broadcast. Make sure you have the rights needed for the podcast audio, music, video, artwork, and other material you include; permission to replay a recording is not established merely because you can play it in OBS. Platforms may also apply their own rules to repeated or reused content, so do not assume looping makes material eligible for monetization or otherwise compliant.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The episode ends and playback stops. | Media Source Loop is off, or the wrong source is playing. | Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop; test the end of the file. |
| The playlist ends without starting again. | Loop Playlist is disabled or the source playlist is not configured as intended. | Check the VLC Video playlist and its Loop Playlist setting. |
| VLC Video is unavailable in OBS. | VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. | Install VLC; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC as the OBS documentation specifies. |
| Playback stops or starts over after a scene change. | The source’s visibility behavior or Media Source activation option may not match the scene setup. | Review whether VLC continues while hidden and whether Restart playback when source becomes active is enabled. Test the scene transition. |
| OBS disconnects from the platform. | The outgoing network path, security software, network equipment, server, or platform may be involved. | Check OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide. It suggests trying a different server when appropriate and checking possible interference from security software or network equipment. Automatic Reconnect may help OBS reconnect but is not a guarantee. |
| The stream is rejected or does not start. | Credentials, account eligibility, ingest setup, or settings may not match the destination’s current requirements. | Verify the platform’s official live setup instructions and account status, then re-enter or refresh the stream credentials as directed by that platform. |
| The computer struggles during the broadcast. | The selected resolution or frame rate may exceed available system resources. | Use OBS’s Overview Guide to understand output settings, test system load, and reduce settings to a level the computer can sustain. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your destination is YouTube and you want the stream to continue without keeping OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
