The command below is an illustrative starting point, not a tested recipe; a looping FFmpeg process alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted, continuously viewable broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- An Ubuntu system with an FFmpeg build that supports the options and codecs you plan to use. The Ubuntu release and package version are not specified here, so check your installed build rather than assuming a particular installation command or option is available.
- A video file with usable video and audio streams, plus enough sustained upload bandwidth for the selected stream settings.
- A stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed.
Enable YouTube Live and get the ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select a stream and open its stream settings.
- Copy the ingest URL and matching stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers. Use the exact URL format shown for the current stream; do not assume every key or FFmpeg build uses the same format.
- Keep the key out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and logs. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Do not mistake a still-pending activation for an FFmpeg error.
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Match the output to both YouTube’s encoder recommendations and the upload bandwidth you can sustain. Higher resolution and frame rate require more bandwidth; a bitrate that is too ambitious for a shared or unstable connection can interrupt the broadcast.

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees for a particular source file, encoder, or connection. YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its encoder guidance lists H.264 video with CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the format you intend to send.

Prepare the Ubuntu command
FFmpeg’s official documentation shows real-time publishing with -re and RTMP output, and its main manual documents input looping. This example combines those mechanisms for a single file. It has not been tested; confirm that your input, codecs, filters, FFmpeg build, and RTMPS URL are compatible before relying on it.

The example’s -g 60 assumes 30 fps output: 60 frames make a two-second GOP at that frame rate. If your frame rate differs, adjust the GOP so keyframes remain two seconds apart. The example bitrate is illustrative only; select values appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate and the connection you measured.

Do not put a real key directly into a public command, script, repository, or shell history. A shell environment variable can reduce accidental exposure in the command text, but it is not a substitute for controlling access to the machine, process environment, or logs.
Start the stream and confirm it in YouTube
- Run the command from the directory containing
video.mp4, or provide the file’s full path. - Open the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room and wait for the preview.
- Check that video and audio are present and review the stream-health indicators before treating the broadcast as ready.
- Test the full path under representative network conditions before leaving it running. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream rather than assuming a successful FFmpeg process means viewers can see a healthy broadcast.
Plan for bandwidth and long-running operation
YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. Its guidance states: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Include audio and other network traffic in your planning. Measure sustained upload performance with the same network conditions the stream will use, including other users and devices; a brief peak-speed result is not enough to establish that the connection can carry the stream continuously.

A supervisor can restart an FFmpeg process if it exits, but a restart cannot correct an invalid key, incompatible media, inadequate upload capacity, a YouTube restriction, or a persistent network outage. Arrange monitoring that can distinguish a running process from a healthy YouTube stream, and decide how an operator will respond to alerts. FFmpeg’s protocol-level looping and reconnect behavior do not guarantee uninterrupted viewing on YouTube.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous session longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete video; plan session management and verify YouTube’s current behavior if archiving matters.

Troubleshooting common problems
