You can use Streamlabs Desktop as the encoder for a YouTube livestream, but a local setup is not automatically a 24/7 service: your video source, computer, power, Streamlabs Desktop, and internet connection all need to keep working. Set up and test the YouTube event and encoder first; for a prerecorded stream, verify the current app’s looping behavior before relying on it, because Streamlabs’ published setup guidance does not establish a specific local-file loop control or automatic recovery after a failure.

Before you start: decide what “24/7” requires

A continuous broadcast needs a source that keeps producing video and an encoder that keeps sending it. With Streamlabs Desktop, those jobs run on your computer. If the computer sleeps, loses power, Streamlabs closes, or the network drops, the feed can stop. YouTube notes that network disruptions can break a stream and recommends monitoring stream health. Its documentation also describes cloud-based 24/7 streaming as a separate approach: YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

This guide covers the local Streamlabs Desktop setup and the checks needed before leaving it running. It does not assume that a scene loops indefinitely or that the app restarts itself after a fault; confirm those behaviors in the version you are using.

Check channel eligibility and prepare your account

  1. Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance. Do not leave this until launch time.

  2. Install Streamlabs Desktop and connect YouTube. Follow the current Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide to install the app and sign in to the YouTube account that owns the channel. The guide lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimum operating systems; check Streamlabs’ current requirements before installing because software requirements can change.

  3. Prepare a reliable local setup. Prevent the computer from sleeping during the planned broadcast, keep it powered, and ensure the internet connection is stable. A wired Ethernet connection can avoid some Wi-Fi problems, but it is optional and cannot prevent an ISP or power outage.

Create a scene and check its sources

  1. In Streamlabs Desktop, create or select a scene, then use the Sources panel to add the material you want viewers to see. Add a camera or capture source only if the broadcast needs one.

  2. Check the preview and audio mixer. Confirm the intended visual source is visible, audio meters respond as expected, and no private windows, alerts, or unintended material appear.

Connect Streamlabs Desktop to the right event

Streamlabs documents two connection paths: sign into YouTube in Desktop and create an event there, or create the event in YouTube Studio and select it in Desktop’s Go Live flow. If you configure an encoder manually, YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key in the event’s stream settings.

YouTube Help describes stream keys this way: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and encoder setup guidance.

Choose stable video and network settings

There is no single best bitrate for every resolution, frame rate, computer, and connection. YouTube’s current general encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate table in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance to select a bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate.

  • Start with a sustainable output. Pick a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode and your upload connection can maintain, rather than selecting the highest available setting by default.
  • Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends keeping the combined bitrate of your streams about 20% below available upload capacity. Base the decision on upload speed, account for other network traffic, and include both primary and backup bitrates if you use them. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s network guidance.
  • Test motion and audio. A static title card may look fine at a setting that struggles with moving video. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health with the actual scene and audio you intend to use.
  • Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes it as the secure extension of RTMP. Select it where your encoder and ingest configuration support it.

Start the stream, then monitor it

  1. Confirm that Streamlabs Desktop is connected to the intended YouTube account and event, and that the event’s privacy setting is correct.

  2. Start the encoder from Streamlabs Desktop. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and check the picture, audio, and stream-health indicators.

  3. When the event requires it, click the go-live control in Live Control Room after the preview is ready. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance and checking the preview before starting.

  4. During a long broadcast, keep an eye on stream health, audio/video quality, local network stability, and available disk space if you are recording locally. A desktop broadcast depends on the local computer and connection remaining operational.

Plan around 24/7-specific limits

  • Outages need a recovery plan. YouTube warns that network disruptions can interrupt a stream. The Streamlabs guidance cited here does not establish automatic recovery after a computer, app, or network failure, so plan to check and restart the setup yourself unless you have verified another recovery mechanism.
  • Auto-start and auto-stop are not source looping. YouTube offers event controls for starting and stopping a stream automatically, but their presence does not establish that a video source loops or that an encoder reconnects after failure. Details are in YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
  • Do not assume one 24-hour archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a complete, single archive for a broadcast lasting 24 hours or longer; plan archival separately and check current YouTube behavior for your use case. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  • Review rights and YouTube policies. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, including music, footage, and other embedded material. A livestream’s technical setup does not establish that the content is permitted or eligible for monetization; check YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies before leaving prerecorded material on air.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
No incoming preview in Live Control Room Confirm that Desktop is connected to the intended YouTube account and event. If using manual configuration, verify the stream URL and key; reset the key if it may have been exposed. Check encoder connection and ingest selection. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance suggests signing out and back in, restarting Desktop, checking the key, and refreshing the custom server/ingest selection for applicable connection errors.
Preview appears, but the wrong event is selected Stop before going live. Recheck the scheduled event selection in Desktop and confirm the matching event in YouTube Studio.
Video stutters or stream health degrades Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a level the computer and upload connection can sustain. Check upload capacity and competing traffic; YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom.
Audio or picture is missing Inspect the scene preview, source visibility, and audio mixer in Desktop. Check that the selected source is active and that the correct audio input is routed.
Stream stops after the source ends or the computer disconnects Verify how the source behaves at end-of-file in your installed app, and check power, sleep settings, application status, and internet connectivity. Do not rely on automatic looping or recovery unless you have confirmed it works in your setup.
