You can run a continuous YouTube broadcast from an India-based VPS by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then running an encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS with the stream’s URL and key. Start the encoder first, confirm its preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and only then click Go live. Live Control Room manages the YouTube event; it does not itself play or send your video. A VPS can keep the encoder process running remotely, but you still need a suitable media source, reliable outbound capacity, monitoring, and a recovery plan.
Before you begin: confirm channel eligibility and prepare your source
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions within the preceding 90 days. YouTube also recommends testing the encoder setup before a real broadcast and monitoring stream health while live. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- A YouTube channel that meets the eligibility requirements.
- An India-region VPS able to run your chosen encoder and remain connected for the intended duration.
- A stable video and audio source, such as a file or playlist configured for continuous playback.
- Sustained outbound network capacity above the stream’s total bitrate, with additional headroom.
- A way to monitor and restart the encoder if its process or connection fails.
Choosing a server in India does not, by itself, establish that a stream will be shown only in India. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not say that VPS location limits viewer eligibility or distribution.
Create the encoder stream in Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Use the RTMPS server URL if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption; the standard RTMP URL may otherwise appear by default. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Store the stream key as a secret. Anyone who obtains it could send a feed to your stream. Do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, support posts, or logs.
Do not substitute a generic server address for the URL shown in your own Live Control Room. The event URL and key must correspond to the stream you intend to broadcast.

Choose bitrate and check the VPS network
Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to values that the VPS can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance gives these recommended H.264 bitrates; they are platform recommendations, not guaranteed minimums or VPS specifications:

The recommended bitrate varies by codec and output settings; YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also lists different ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. In the Live Control Room, provide the encoder with the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into output formats for viewers.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, including a backup bitrate when applicable. For example, a 5 Mbps configured feed calls for at least 6 Mbps of measured available upload capacity under that guideline (5 × 1.2). That calculation is a planning rule, not a promise that a connection will remain stable. YouTube advises testing outbound capacity from the relevant network rather than relying only on download-speed results; shared network capacity can reduce what your VPS actually gets. Configure and start the encoder on the VPS
Install an encoder appropriate to your operating system and media workflow. FFmpeg can publish a media file to an RTMP server in real time; its protocol documentation explains RTMP/RTMPS support. The following is a pattern, not a ready-to-run command: replace the placeholders with your media source and the exact server URL and key from Live Control Room, and use the correct input and output options for your source and chosen codec.

Do not publish a real key in a shared terminal transcript or script repository. Keep it in a protected configuration or secret store, restrict file permissions, and avoid shell history or process logs that could expose it. Configure your process supervisor or hosting controls to detect a stopped encoder and attempt a restart, but treat that as recovery from a process failure—not as a guarantee that YouTube will restore the same event or that viewers will see uninterrupted playback.

Go live and verify the broadcast
- Start the encoder on the VPS and check that it is sending the intended media at the configured resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming stream preview.
- Check the picture, sound, and stream health indicators. YouTube’s guidance says: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.”
- When the preview and health look right, click Go live in the control room. Starting the VPS encoder comes first; clicking Go live makes the event live to viewers.
- Keep a way to monitor both the encoder process and YouTube’s stream health during the broadcast.
Plan separately for a 24/7 replay archive
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise a complete automatic replay for one uninterrupted stream lasting longer than 12 hours. Do not rely on a single 24/7 event to preserve a full replay: verify YouTube’s current behavior for your account and event, and maintain a separate recording or archive workflow if you need a complete copy.
