To keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, you need a continuous feed from an encoder or cloud service; YouTube does not automatically loop an uploaded video. Enable live streaming, create a stream in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder with the stream URL and key, test the feed, then start and monitor the broadcast. For a prerecorded loop, make sure you have the necessary rights and understand how the format fits YouTube’s current policies.
What you need for a 24/7 YouTube live stream
A live channel needs a source that keeps sending video and audio to YouTube. That can be software running on an always-on computer, a dedicated hardware encoder, or a cloud service that streams prerecorded videos. With a local setup, your computer, encoder, power and internet connection all need to remain available. A cloud service can keep the feed running without your computer staying on, but check its recovery, monitoring, supported formats and costs before choosing one.
YouTube’s live-streaming guide describes software and hardware encoder options and lists a cloud 24/7 prerecorded-video service as an example; that listing is not an endorsement or verification of any provider’s current features or price. Check your channel’s eligibility
- Your channel must be verified, and it must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days.
- YouTube’s current guidance says streamers must be at least 16 years old.
- If this is your first live stream, activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable live streaming in advance rather than waiting until your planned launch.
See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.

Set up the stream in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Configure a new stream or schedule one, then review its settings.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder. Use RTMPS when available for an encrypted connection.
- Protect the stream key. YouTube says to treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Set up your encoder. Choose a video source or playlist and configure the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and audio. The exact controls vary by software or hardware encoder.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview. Check the picture and sound in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast on YouTube.
- Verify the public watch page. Open the channel or stream watch page from another device, confirm it plays, and check stream health in Live Control Room.
For stream-key management, see YouTube’s live stream settings guide. YouTube’s encoder setup guide is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Choose encoder settings your connection can sustain
Use the current YouTube settings table for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that suits every stream. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. Supported encoder video options listed by YouTube include H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1; listed audio options include AAC and MP3. YouTube supports up to 60 fps and recommends RTMP/RTMPS ingestion.
Your available upload bandwidth must exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom, so do not configure a stream to consume all the upload capacity your connection reports. If the connection varies, choose a lower bitrate or resolution rather than risking repeated drops. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions table and streaming tips for the current values and guidance.

Test and launch before leaving the stream unattended
- Play the actual video material and listen to the audio; a still image or silent desktop may not reveal issues with motion, clipping, missing sound or transitions.
- Check that the Live Control Room preview appears and that the stream health indicators do not show a connection or encoding problem.
- Open the watch page on a separate device or browser to confirm that viewers can access the broadcast.
- Keep the source files and a recovery plan. Know how you will detect a stopped feed, restart the encoder or service, and verify the stream has returned.
YouTube’s own guidance is simple: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Plan for disconnects, monitoring and archives
A nonstop broadcast still needs operational oversight. A local encoder depends on the computer, power and internet staying available; a local outage can interrupt the feed. Decide who or what will notice a failure, how the encoder or service will be restarted, and how you will check that the restored broadcast is actually playing. YouTube’s setup materials do not establish a universal recovery guarantee for third-party services, so verify recovery behavior with the provider you choose.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish the archive result for a continuous stream longer than that. If keeping a complete archive matters, retain the original files yourself or plan shorter events and verify the resulting archive in Studio. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archive guidance.

Use prerecorded video only when you have the rights
Before looping recordings, confirm that you have permission for every video, image, song and other asset, including any material supplied by someone else. Check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your specific content and format. The live-stream setup guidance does not determine whether a particular prerecorded loop qualifies for monetization. A continuous broadcast does not itself guarantee monetization, recommendations or any particular amount of watch time.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | The encoder is not sending, or the stream URL or key is incorrect. | Confirm the encoder is running, recheck the copied server URL and key, and reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream repeatedly disconnects | Upload bandwidth is insufficient or unstable, or the local computer, power or network is interrupted. | Compare total stream bitrate with available upload capacity; reduce bitrate or resolution and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check local power and network stability. |
| Video stutters or looks poor | The selected bitrate, resolution or frame rate is too demanding for the connection or encoder. | Use YouTube’s table for the codec and target quality, then test with real motion. Lower the target if the connection cannot sustain it. |
| Audio is missing or distorted | The encoder may be using the wrong audio source, unsupported configuration or excessive audio level. | Check the selected audio input and supported AAC or MP3 settings, then listen to the Live Control Room preview before going live. |
| Stream ends or archive is unavailable | A long event may not receive the same automatic archive handling as a shorter stream. | YouTube states automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; preserve source files or divide programming into shorter events if an archive is important. |
