The playlist can repeat, but a local OBS setup cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation: the computer, power, network, files, OBS, and YouTube ingest all need to keep working.
Before you build the stream
Make sure your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming access can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before you plan to launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Clear the music for public broadcasting
Confirm that you have permission for both the musical compositions and the specific recordings you plan to play in a public online broadcast. Check the territory, term, monetization, and platform conditions in your agreements, and keep permission records. Buying a track, using a consumer music subscription, or finding music online does not by itself establish broadcast rights.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder, warning, temporary interruption, or termination if the content remains; a copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. If you have licensed content from someone else, ask the rights owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Prepare a local playlist
Put the cleared audio files in a local folder and decide the order before adding them to OBS. Keep the files available on the computer for as long as the stream runs. Test transitions between tracks and listen for unexpected silence, clipping, or abrupt level changes before going public.
Build and test the looping playlist in OBS
Install VLC and add a VLC Video source
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. The VLC Video source will not appear in OBS unless VLC is installed.
- In OBS, select the scene for the music stream. In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the local files to the playlist and arrange them in the intended playback order.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable DJ-style sequence.
- Confirm that the source is visible in the scene and start playback. Listen through several track boundaries, not just the opening seconds.
OBS documents VLC Video as the playlist option, with separate controls for looping and shuffle. For a single file instead of a playlist, add a Media Source and enable its Loop property. Media Source supports video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, as well as audio formats MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live. In Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the stream setup.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. Use the YouTube-provided values rather than a key from another broadcast.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it or share it. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings; see Manage live stream settings.
- Configure output using the settings below as a starting point, then check the YouTube preview and stream health before making the broadcast public.
Choose encoder settings that fit your stream
For an ordinary SDR music stream, RTMP or RTMPS is sufficient; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. HLS is an alternative protocol, not a requirement for looping a playlist, and YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments. Use HLS only when you have a specific protocol or codec reason. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS in its HLS setup guide.

Do not apply the 1080p30 bitrate to every resolution, frame rate, or codec. YouTube’s encoder recommendations vary by those settings and can change; check its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube transcodes live streams for playback formats, but recommends testing with similar audio and motion and monitoring the actual event.

Go live and keep watch on the broadcast
- Start the playlist in OBS and check that the audio meter moves as expected.
- Start streaming from OBS, then confirm that the YouTube Live Control Room preview shows the intended video and audible music.
- Watch stream health in Live Control Room and monitor playback at track transitions. Check the computer, network, and OBS periodically; a playlist loop does not detect a power cut, computer crash, application failure, missing media file, or network outage.
- If a problem occurs, diagnose the source and ingest separately: verify local playback and the OBS audio meter first, then check the OBS connection and YouTube stream health.
There is no automatic recovery guarantee for this local OBS workflow in the cited YouTube and OBS guidance. Continuity depends on the host computer, power, network, media files, OBS playback, and YouTube ingest; one OBS instance is not a failover system.
Know what happens to the replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full. If you need a complete replay, plan and verify a separate recording workflow rather than relying on the automatic archive.

Troubleshoot common failures
