AzuraCast provides AutoDJ playback through Liquidsoap and a streaming frontend based on Icecast-KH. That keeps a station’s scheduled audio running from the server, but it does not grant music rights or guarantee uninterrupted uptime. Before broadcasting, confirm that your permissions cover both the musical works and the sound recordings, and that they specifically allow your planned internet use.
What you need before you start
- A Linux VPS: AzuraCast is server software, and its documentation recommends Docker for most installations. You will need administrator or sudo access to install it.
- A domain or subdomain: AzuraCast requires a domain pointing to the installation to use Let’s Encrypt for HTTPS.
- A cleared music library: Secure permission for the specific works and recordings, uses, and territories involved before uploading tracks.
- A maintenance and backup plan: A single VPS can fail or need maintenance; the software is not an uptime guarantee.
AzuraCast lists Linode (Akamai), Vultr, and DigitalOcean as providers with one-click installation options, as well as self-installation. Compare provider region, bandwidth or egress charges, support, port availability, backup features, and recovery options before choosing; provider prices and terms can change. Size the VPS for the station
AzuraCast’s published figures are software requirements and recommendations, not guarantees about listener capacity. The actual resources needed depend on factors including library size and stream or transcoding load.

Check the current AzuraCast requirements when selecting a VPS. Leave disk headroom for station media and system operation, and monitor resource use after the station is running rather than treating the recommendation as a capacity promise.

Confirm Indian music rights before transmitting
Software can automate playback; it cannot clear a catalogue. Treat rights in musical and literary works separately from rights in sound recordings, and ask the relevant rights holders to confirm in writing that your planned repertoire, internet use, commercial model, and distribution territories are covered.
Ask IPRS about the works and repertoire
IPRS identifies “Internet Non Interactive” as a licensing category. It also says platforms using music in its repertoire, including online streaming services, need an IPRS licence and/or must pay the author royalty share for IPRS author members. A radio-style stream may be relevant to that category, but confirm the applicable route for your exact service and catalogue with IPRS. IPRS licence chooser · IPRS licensing information

Ask PPL and recording owners about digital use
PPL’s tariff page says: “The Licence issued by PPL India strictly covers only on-ground usage of music and DOES NOT permit any non-physical / digital usage.” Its FAQ directs radio-broadcast licence enquiries to its licensing team. Do not assume an on-ground or radio-broadcast permission also clears an internet stream or simulcast; ask PPL specifically about internet use, and contact other relevant labels or recording owners as needed. PPL describes its repertoire as exceeding 1.04 crore songs across multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi, Bhojpuri, and Haryanvi. That is PPL’s stated catalogue size, not confirmation that a particular track is included or licensed for your intended internet use. Install AzuraCast on the VPS
- Create a compatible VPS. Choose a Linux server with Docker compatibility and resources appropriate to your library and station. If you use a provider’s one-click option, follow that provider’s current AzuraCast installation flow.
- Prepare the host. For a manual deployment, start with a fresh, minimal host and connect over SSH with administrator or sudo access. Follow the current AzuraCast Docker installation guide, which also documents unattended installation commands suitable for cloud-init. Use the live guide for commands and prerequisites rather than relying on copied commands that may become outdated.
- Finish the web setup. Open the installed AzuraCast web interface and complete its initial setup. Keep administrator credentials private.
- Create a station. Add a station in the interface and configure its name and available station settings. AzuraCast uses Liquidsoap for AutoDJ and Icecast-KH as its broadcasting frontend. About AzuraCast
- Add only cleared audio. Upload tracks for which you have suitable permissions, then configure playlists and AutoDJ scheduling so playback can continue through the day and night.
- Test the listener-facing stream. Check the station’s public mount point and player from a device or network outside the VPS. Confirm that audio plays and that your playlist or AutoDJ schedule advances as intended.
Set up HTTPS, backups, and maintenance
Point a domain to the server and enable HTTPS
Set up a domain or subdomain that points to the AzuraCast installation, then follow the official SSL instructions to configure Let’s Encrypt. A domain pointing to the installation is required for that certificate flow. AzuraCast SSL and Let’s Encrypt guide
Back up the station and schedule updates
Back up the station’s media and configuration, and decide how you will restore them if the VPS is lost or damaged. AzuraCast’s update guidance recommends backing up first and warns that stations will be briefly offline during updates. Schedule maintenance during a low-listener period and, where possible, tell listeners when to expect it. AzuraCast update guide

Plan for outages
A single VPS can have a host, network, storage, or maintenance interruption. Continuous playback software alone cannot remove those risks. Consider monitoring, tested backups, and a recovery procedure appropriate to the station. AzuraCast documents AzuraRelay as an option for distributing a stream or handling a large volume of incoming traffic; whether it fits your architecture depends on your audience and design.
