First confirm that your channel can livestream, then create an encoder stream, add its stream key to your software, test the tapping audio, and keep the PC awake, powered, and connected. A spare PC can do the job, but neither it nor YouTube guarantees uninterrupted uptime; plan to monitor the stream and recover from failures.
Before you begin: confirm YouTube live access
YouTube requires the channel to be verified and not to have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check live access in YouTube Studio before configuring the PC; otherwise, you may complete the encoder setup but be unable to go live. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
Create an encoder stream and protect its key

Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or configure a livestream and select encoder streaming. The broadcast is the viewer-facing event; the stream is the audiovisual feed your encoder sends to it. YouTube’s developer documentation explains the distinction and how the pieces fit together: Understanding broadcasts and streams.

Copy the stream key shown for the event. Treat it like a password: enter it only in your encoder, do not show it on screen or share it, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed. A person with the key could send a feed to your stream.

Keep the Live Control Room available while testing. It lets you check whether YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and whether the broadcast is live.
Configure OBS on the spare PC
Connect OBS to YouTube

Install and open OBS on the PC. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect an account or choose the stream-key option if that is how you are configuring the event. If using a key, paste the key copied from the Live Control Room. OBS labels can change between releases, so check the current OBS help portal if the interface differs: OBS Help Portal.

Create a simple scene. Add the intended visual—such as a stable image you own or have permission to use, or a live camera view—and add the audio input that will capture the tapping. Preview the scene and confirm that both picture and sound are present.

Choose resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and encoder settings that your PC and upload connection can sustain. There is no universal setting established for every spare PC and internet connection. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings recommendations, then test rather than assuming the computer can maintain a chosen profile around the clock. OBS guidance about using an available hardware encoder for recordings does not establish a particular always-on livestream configuration.

Start with a private or unlisted test stream where available. Confirm in the Live Control Room that the feed arrives, and watch and listen from another device. Check for dropped frames, buffering, clipped or distorted tapping, unwanted room noise, and audio-video synchronization before making the broadcast public.
Capture tapping audio that suits your room
Microphone choice and placement depend on the tapping sound you want and the noise in the room. The available guidance does not establish a required microphone type or validate particular models. A USB microphone is one possible option, not a requirement; before buying one, check that it works with the spare PC and test it in the room where you will record.

Place the microphone securely so it will not shift or vibrate against the desk during the stream.

Listen to a test recording through headphones. Adjust the distance and input level if taps sound harsh, too quiet, or distorted.

Listen for fan noise, traffic, electrical hum, and other sounds that may become tiring over a long session.

Check that the microphone connection does not block a port or interfere with the PC’s airflow.
Prepare the PC and connection for long sessions
A spare PC only streams while its encoder is running and it has power and internet access. These precautions can reduce avoidable interruptions, but they cannot guarantee continuous service.

Disable sleep and automatic shutdown for the streaming session, and set the display to turn off separately if desired.

Use reliable power and a stable internet connection. Avoid relying on a connection that is also being heavily used for uploads or other traffic.

Keep the PC in a ventilated location and make sure the scene, audio device, and network remain available after restarts or updates.

Check both OBS and the Live Control Room periodically. If the PC loses power, the network drops, or the encoder stops, the stream can end even if your video and scene are configured correctly.
Use media you have the right to stream and set the audience accurately
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the live picture with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the stream, or result in a copyright strike. A licence does not necessarily prevent interruption: a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel. Original tapping audio and visuals you own or have permission to use make rights issues simpler. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshoot common interruptions
